HW News - Bad Timing for AMD, Intel Arc Isn't Dead (Again), & Right to Repair Phones

This hardware news episode talks about confusion regarding Intel Arc's continued existence, AMD sponsored games skipping DLSS inclusion, bad timing with Starfield for AMD, and the 4060 Ti dropping under MSRP already. We'll also talk about some ASUS ROG updates and the EU voting for replaceable phone batteries. Terra: I don't like this AMD sponsor thing as it pertains to the exclusion of alternative upscaling technologies in AMD sponsored titles. It's something I've noticed quite a while ago and while I agree that if there was a worldwide law that only allowed one reconstruction/upscaling technology in the game than FSR would be the best choice for the consumer, but we don't live in that world. There is no benefits to the consumer as a whole if we don't get FSR, DLSS and XeSS in all big AAA games. The fact that I see people even defending this blows my mind, whether it be whataboutisms or whatever. These technologies are easier to integrate than they've ever been and if they have one integrated, the framework is already there to ad the others. If a modder can ad DLSS or FSR days after release in a game than AAA developers can do it too.

Next step should be to 100% outlaw so-called Planned Obsolescence by the likes of Apple/Samsung/other companies worldwide. Said tactic is utterly ridiculous & directly contributes to the vast amount of waste when it comes to electronic devices in general. Folks should not be forced to upgrade their perfectly-working electronic devices simply because Apple/Samsung/other companies want to force said upgrade by locking one's device out of future security updates to the device's firmware/software. FYI, there are smartphones out there that allow one to replace the battery in the event of failure. I know this since I own such a phone - the AT&T Calypso 3 which is a cheap US 40.00 phone. I refuse to spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars on an overpriced Apple/Samsung phone that locks the battery inside the case in such a way where only authorized service centers can access it. This is how these companies gouge one's pocketbook & is 100% anti-consumer period.

Am I the only one not bothered by the exclusivity deal on having an open tool on the game. Me personally I'd prefer open technologies implemented into games that don't limit what GPU you pick based on software and not being tied into a product based on a technology. I've been trapped into the Nvidia ecosystem for years because I purchased an Acer 34 and then two 38 ultrawides with Gsync. I gave up on the tech this generation to allow me to have a choice in what vendor I use instead of paying the Nvidia tax. My monitors don't allow me to use the technology with other vendors cards. DLSS like Hairworks is just Nvidia trying to do the same in a software sense. Any new monitors/tech I use will always be open after being bitten by this.

The EU parliament is a total sham!? That's not GOOD NEWS!They're not even elected in any traditional sense. They also voted to reduce e-waste, years ago, to standardise phone chargers, namely Apple, the only major seller not using Micro USB. They then reneged on their entire ruling, allowing Apple to include e-waste in a Lightning adapter, and later the lightning - usb phono cable. The EU were most likely bribed by Apple, pretending they were the good guys, and not the world's most valuable company, controlling the tax they don't pay. The EU meanwhile, destroying farming in an entire country, as the good guys, too!

AMD isn't blocking or preventing XeSS or DLSS on the titles that only provide FSR; it's simply devs and publishers are waking up and supporting FOSS instead of closed-source, proprietary BS. Open-source is good for everyone. This DLSS argument is just the PhysX vs Havok BS all over again. PhysX was closed-source and locked away on Nvidia GPUs, and Havok is open-source; so naturally the industry made an adjustment and migrated to integrating Havok physics for games over PhysX.

This FSR vs DLSS fake outrage is maddening.
FSR is open source, it runs all cards.
DLSS is propriety, it is a software hack to allow Nvidia to make crappy cards at high prices. It isn't good for gamers. Except maybe for the ones who over paid for a mediocre card.
Why isn't NVIDIA contributing to the open source FSR and wasting resource on leveraging its market share to squeeze out the smaller players out of the market? (See a different phrasing changes the conversation. )

I noticed that my local tech web seller company is constantly listing a LOT of Demo GPUs. Like normally if it is a returned item, the box got damaged etc. they get listed as Demo and with a lower price. But they are going through a LOT of them recently. Starting to wonder if the cards sell so poorly at normal prices that they have just started selling a bunch of regular cards as Demo versions, so they can sell them at a discount without openly lowering the prices...

What honestly is the point of claiming exclusivity to FSR? Most game devs already include it with DLSS and it isn't like FSR relies on certain technology like Nvidia does with Tensor cores. You can use FSR even on Nvidia cards. It honestly doesn't make sense in the slightest. This doesn't help boost sales of AMD cards and it doesn't make them look any better than Nvidia. Just dumb decision/business making all around.

i was looking to get a 16gb model sometime in the future when i had the money so was disheartened to hear the news.
hopefully more vendors will be able to make this variant as there are only a small selection currently.
i wasn't a fan of the acer version but gunnir has some sleek options like the flux series as well as the photon white which will likely be my top choice if it becomes available in the uk.

It really feels like Intel, AMD and NGreedier have all pleasantly reminded us, that despite reaching out to HW Unboxed, GN and De8aurer, to appear like the good guys to the best hardware reviewers on YT, they ARE NOT OUR FRIENDS. They adopt an Apple approach to HW today, giving you what they dictate you need as better, how they define it in profit first. Not your understanding of performance.

No Jack, No easy battery replace, dead pixel thk to front cameras that are for most part useless...
Hope they go back the the old roots, not that I need a phone but i prefer the older designs over the new ones.
They do need to come with a generic type of battery and as technology is stagnating there is no better time to start pulling the trigger on changes.

5:53 I don't understand why everyone thinks it's amd's fault. AMD is not the developer of each of these games. It seems like the responsibility falls on the developer to implement new technologies. If Nvidia wanted to, they could go out of their way to ensure that these developers have the software tools they need to implement their technologies.

Hope there exclusivity, Nvidia have done dirty for decades so why shouldnt AMD? And for the fools buying overpriced nvidia, well i dont see the problem, they are already takeing it up the tailpipe, so there shouldn't be a problem for them. Atleast they can run their dlss in jurassic park and Microsoft Flight Sim :D
reply

more proof that AMD was never the good guys they simply were desperate for market share, now that they have at least some of it, Nvidia has proven to be more open and AMD to be more restrictive and handfisted
There are no good corps, stop fanboying for people who dont care about you

reply

AMD farming L's lol I switched to nvidia for the first time ever and got a 4070. (i know terrible value) But i'll never look back until nvidia gives me a reason to. Everything runs so much cleaner. Cooler, less energy consumption, No instability and crashes so far
reply

Hey Steve, the upscaling table: the reason there are more dlss exclusives is because the technology has been available so much longer, very rarely will game devs go update old games if they require recompiling, QA and pushing out updates as is the case with implementing FSR
reply

People crap on AMD for doing the same things that Nvidia does BUT nobody questions it much when Nvidia does it. This is what I've observed over the years. I have a 4090 so I don't have any AMD fanboy skin in the game. It's just an observation.
reply

I hope they allow it, it is not good practice and fans will start hating AMD for it. I mean every game always had more DLSS support and only few had AMD FSR, but with time things changed, I think they should not resort to these kind of tactics.
reply

the whole industry is in the midst of a major low and this paints all players with a broad depressing brush - gamers and open source ai practitioners will have to wait for 2-3 gen for any relief or major changes in status quo - mostly accurate
reply

yeah modders will have other upscalers added pretty quickly most likely. it makes all these arguments kinda pointless but still scummy practice for any company to block other technology in games that are made for everyone to enjoy.
