We're reviewing Intel's new Core i5-10400 CPU and benchmarking it with 3200MHz and 2666MHz memory, mostly vs. the AMD Ryzen 3300X, 3600, and Intel 10600K. This benchmark and review of the Intel Core i5-10400 CPU looks at Intel's cheapest available 10-series (10th Gen) CPU. There will be more to follow, like the upcoming Intel i3-10320, 10300, and 10100 CPUs, but the 10400 was the floor of available CPUs on launch day. Other launches include the 10900K, 10700K, and 10600K, all of which we've already reviewed separately and can be found on the channel (or below). We paid 195 for the i5-10400 from Newegg on launch day, and it therefore compares the most directly with the R5 3600 from a pricing perspective. From a performance perspective, the best points of comparison include the R3 3300X, R5 3600, and i5-10600K (especially with an overclock), which leave the i5-1040 flanked heavily and without many reasons to purchase it. The i5-10400 also loses a significant portion of its performance when run with the more realistic clock speeds (and timings, for that matter, that are associated with lower-end memory). The Z490 motherboards can run XMP with higher speeds, but it's the lower-end B-series and H-series motherboards that make sense to couple with the 10400, and those won't support the higher speeds found on Z490. The i5-10400 is a i7-8700(non K) lower boost clocks. They kept the lower silicon quality that did not live up to preferred 8700 specs. I had a 8700, that could Maintain boost clocks of steady 4300 MHz 6c/12t stress load (about 75W CPU usage) But a normal user would never know the difference. This CPU is actually good Value ....If not for the Ryzen 1600 AF (Which I got for about 100 recently) But still 75% of all gamers , has Intel as their prefered brand. That is why they have a higher pricetag. And they actually has lower memory latency, so that could be justified. Most can't notice the difference, but maybe the real fast gamers can. Intel needed to launch a new Lake. All the new CPU's are Rebrands, except the 10900K! I do like the New 10 core monster. Awesome CPU (Really). The insane supercar of the CPU World. Best of the best silicons they must have kept in the safe. 14nm 10c/20t in such a small package. And 5+ GHz boost clocks. But Would I buy it for MSRP..? No! :) I get the Ryzen 1600AF (40% less performance) for less than 1/5 of the price. IN the end, It all comes down to value and what you really Need.

I'll say this, while not every chip within a release cycle is going to be a banger, AMD has officially forced Intel to compete on price, and to an extent, performance value. We're all winners here! Want a ripper of an FPS gaming rig? 10600k is an incredible value. Want an all around productivity beast, 3900X is an even better value now since the MC price drop. Want a budget gaming rig? 10400 seems to fit the bill nicely. Need a budget Swiss army knife? 3600 is unmatched. Remember everyone, rooting for a team is great and all, but the longer they trade blows competitively, the more we win as consumers. I'm rooting for both, because for the first time in years, I'm actually excited about the innovation in the desktop compute segment. Now if only AMD's gaming GPU division could remove their heads from their arses, we might get the same in the GPU segment. RTX 3000 will be a lot more interesting if AMD finally manages to get RDNA 2/Big Navi to market and actually competitive with Nvidia.

Illogical conclusions, 10400 especially the 10400f is the cheapest way of gaming on the budget regardless of if it is locket. The f costs the same as the 3600 and outperform every amd cpu in games if you pair it with fast ram, just like for every other intel cpu. Frequency is not that important anymore as 4.3 when you lock the cpu to it will be plenty enough. Just like proven here, ram makes a big difference and on the intel platform even on this locked sku you probably even can go to 4000+. The only thing that is a bit meh is that the z490 mobos costs about 50 / more than say the msi b450 max boards. How many did not buy the x570 boards with their 3600 because they did not have an am4 cpu so that they could buy and flash a b450 board with it, an x570 boards costs actually 10 more than even the cheapest x490 board. So no, the locked i5 skus are the cheapest way to make a proper gaming build and I dont understand why GN recommends the 300 10600k over a 190 locked sku for gaming.

3200C14 to 2666C15 is a big jump in latency. 8.75ns Vs 11.25ns 1st word. The 2666C15 had both lower speed and 28.5% worse absolute latency, 10.94ns Vs 13.88ns 8th word (More reflective of actual memory use) was a 26.8% increase in latency. That there was only a 16% decrease in performance in Hitman 2 is surprising, given gaming is generally a latency sensitive workload. Seems like an unusual selection of memory speeds to compare, whether intentional or not, there is a weighting against the 2666 memory that has nothing to do with the bandwidth. Were the tests measuring the difference in memory speeds, or was it measuring the difference in latency? What results does DDR4-2666CL11 (Roughly equivalent absolute latency to 3200C14) or 3200C18 (equivalent to 2666C15) get? Frankly I was surprised that you could get 3200 memory to operate at that speed at all, given that you would have to overclock the IMC, which isn't supposed to be allowed on non-K SKUs.

Intel doesn't need overclocking to compete at budget price points. It's not going to significantly change the real world performance of a part anymore. But lets say it did, overclocking a 10400 allowed it to leapfrog the 3600, what would that recommendation look like? 'Don't buy this part unless you plan to overclock, oh and also there will be a percentage of people who just lose the lottery and should have bought a 3600 anyway.' That's an insane recommendation that no one is going to seriously make. The fact is Intel needs architectural and process improvements along with a continuation of their examination of their pricing structure now that they aren't the dominant force they used to be. Overclocking is a thing people enjoy doing, which is fine, but it's no longer necessary to be competitive in actual performance of a processor.

This tech stuff fits in with these times. There are plenty of reasonable people at Intel as there are in the US as a country, but both groups are caught up by their leaders in the end of an era of dominance. And for similar reasons. Getting fat, dumb and happy. And letting a corosive culture develop in which defending a position was seen as more important than actually being the best. Last year I bought AMD 3600 and 2700X to replace Sandy Bridge Intels. They new ones have years in them and AMD at this stage seems the only likely contenders to replace them.

That chart showed exactly what I was going to say, there is no performance benefit in gaming from the 9600K and right now that chip can be had for around 189.99 roughly if you shop around! I built one of these systems with a 2060 KO and it's gaming performance is pretty decent over all! I was really after a good 1080p gaming experience as all I have is a 75hz JVC TV for a display, so it fits the bill nicely but I would have built AMD had it been in stock! Seriously nothing was in stock for AMD or the prices where and still are very inflated!

A question for ask GN, if it's included. Steve, what are your connections to companies like AMD, INTEL and NVIDIA and sponsors? Specifically i mean what type of scenarios where brands, sponsors and company's are most likely to per-say give you a product to test, or limited information to work off for your initial criticism and/or praise in reviews? Another side question: Obviously you will get CPUs/GPUs/Memory and such, but is there specific less technical products you might receive on a regular basis that we the viewers don't know about?

13:21 My R5 3600 beats Intels new i5-10400 6C/12T in some test, that R5 chip is almost 12months old and now Intel's new CPU don't even beat AMD's from 12months ago being a similar core/thread design. As a hardware lover I'm happy to see the change AMD has done since their FX launch which at the time wouldn't even beat Intel's old chips from the year before. Well how the times have changed where now Intel launches a product and it doesn't beat AMD's CPU from the previous years launch. SWINGS AND ROUNDABOUTS :)

In January I picked up a 9700k for 200 due to the owner going for a 9900k after buying it. I don t think you can ever convince me AMD has a better offer in the price range and I have it a basic 5.0 OC all core. Paired with 32gb 3200mhz memory and a brand new 2060S with a 500gb WD black as my primary storage. All for under 800. You would be hard pressed to convince me to go AMD after this buying experience. Oh and the board is an MSI gaming plus Z390. Gotta admit that s a good build right?
