HW News - RTX 3000 Leaks, 4nm TSMC Node, Sony PS5 Design, & Intel Lakefield

The biggest news item of the week was, unexpectedly, the NVIDIA RTX 3000-series leaks. We've seen a lot of coverage of these, but wanted to focus on the manufacturing angle and our thoughts of how prototype coolers are made. We'll also be talking about Sony's PS5 announcements and design, with a particular interest in its thermals, and the never-ending release of GTA V. Further, Intel & AMD Hades Canyon (Kaby Lake-G) support is in the news, as are SLS side-channel attacks on Armv8-A chips. TSMC's 4nm process, rarely discussed, gets some coverage alongside its 5nm and 3nm nodes. All that and more in hardware news this week.

Xbox 360 and ps2 (fat) were stackable, best thing ever because you could just have a pile of systems with all the cables closely managed.
Now you've got a bunch of different height things that all need to stand up next to each other taking up desk space.
I literally just replaced my ps2 slim with a ps2 fat because the fat can be stacked and the slim cant.
Megadrive/ps1
ps2
Xbox 360
PS4 (slim, pro, whatever I dont care or have one)
XB1X (dont actually have one)
PC
All in a 40cmX40cm (1.3X1.3ft) desk space, Thanks very much.

How about this nightmare
Megadrive/ps1
ps2 slim (cant eject disc)
ps3 super slim (cant eject disc and is rounded so hard to balance ps2)
xbox 360Slim (being cooked from the top vents being blocked by ps3)
Xbox one (being cooked from the top vents being blocked by xbox 360)

That neighborhood slow down is because gigabit connections are done via gpon from provider to the user. Interestingly, the optic connection is passive and thus kinda cheap to create. However, you can t properly slow someone down. You basically have to slow down the entire connect from which many homes are connected to on the other side. It s a fun design when you don t think of issues like inability of limiting anywhere but the upstream. It s also the reason why when you try to speed-test a gpon connection it ll at first show speeds like 20% or more higher than the norm (at least in my case, it starts with 500 mbps instead of 350 I pay for). However that slowly throttles down because the ISP is able to filter and delay your packets upstream and your own device notices that and gets told to basically slow down.

21:44 ah the wonders of good and cheap european internet structure. He pays 13x more then me and i get 400 mb upload and 1gb down. While also consistent speeds and no data cap.
I do live in romania, and i feel like there is no excuse for america to be in such a worse situation ,on so many layers worse then a 2nd world country .
I would like to state, that nowere in europe have i heard of throttling a connection, let alone a whole array.I have never heard of people getting throttled over their data usage(and trust me romania is big on pirating and uploading) let alone hearing about throttling a entire neighbor, every connection is independent, nothing is shared between neighbors(lived in apartment complex and now in a house),as it should be.

It is so odd that a company like Cox cannot support the bandwidth they contracted to provide. It is also so odd that they think unilateral changes to those contracts are acceptable. Of course they have mandatory arbitration clauses in those same contracts preventing the other parties from winning the entire company in the breach of contract suits they so richly deserve.
I then think of Chattanooga where the electric utility provides actual gigabit internet, at a price comparable to what Cox charges, for basic service. Or the fact that in Western Europe the speeds and reliability Cox, and the other big ISP's provide, would get them shutdown.
But yeah, net neutrality was so awful. Huh?

Personally I think the PS5 looks great! My only worry about it is that the white half of the controller getting dirty with use, since I have no clue how resistant to dirt it is or how easy it is to clean. It's a million times better looking than the original fat PS3, I think we can all agree on that! My PS3 is the second version that still has the curved top, but at least it's matte and not glossy like the first gen units. Still not all that attractive though. I like the way the PS4 looks, but I never bought one of them. I've found as I get older I'm less into gaming, which is a shame since I used to really enjoy it.

For a developed country, US Internet services are pathetic. Capping 'from 35Mbps to 10Mbps'?... in my small country that is like the capping for a 'free basic service for seniors'. My IPS does not sell service packs under 60Mbps. (Down here there was no change in the service because of the human malware crisis, in spite of a huge spike in use and the complete transition of the educational system to online classes; also, the lockdown in my country was pretty serious and total, nothing like the mess & festival of BS that is still going on in the States).

Yeeaaa.. some regulations might be in order if your ISP's can get away of doing that shit to customers. Here in Finland we actually have actual unlimited data and they are very cheap also. Even the 4G contracts are really unlimited and ISP's can't just slow the connections down or put a data cap on it mid-contract or they will be in trouble with the consumer protection agency. My 1Gb fiber cots less than 50 /month and it's a pretty standard price, some can get even cheaper.

USA needs to get some laws going against internet providers, it's so weird to keep hearing how they exploit consumers. It literally doesn't cost them anything when things are up and running and when their investment has been earned back its just pure profit they are getting.
I hope in the coming years things will change for the better for everyone outside Europe. I wish the same internet plan that I have to everyone so we can all enjoy the internet without (data)limits.

ok, so the ps2 was 299.99 at release and in 2020 thats 458 ish, and that was the last time console hardware was close to pc hardware. Now with this gen thats also happening, so i think the ps5 should be 450, max 500 and the digital 350-400. They will make their money from games and membership. I really dont see them doing well at any other price cuz once u start going to 600+ you can build a pc with the same hardware just no exclusives.

I've actually been very largely interested in the 30xx series for a while now. I've basically been sticking with my baseline 1080, because nothing else has been a significant enough of an upgrade to justify the price, and frankly it's only just now starting to dip below where I'd want. I'd likely wait for the iterated (super/TI) version of the 30xx before going for it, so I'll be watching and waiting with anticipation.
