Yacy Is The Search Engine That Respects Your Privacy DistroTube Yacy is a decentralized, peer-to-peer web search engine. All users are equal with no central controlling authority. Access to the search functions is made by a locally running web server which provides a search box to enter search terms, and returns search results in a similar format to other popular search engines. Yacy is available on Windows, Mac and Linux - https://yacy.net/

Glad to see you cover this! Been using this for more than a year for different purposes on different machines. For 3d modeling as an example, I crawled all of the foss texture and hdri sites I like to use...now when I search from my home page in Brave, I get the results of those crawls directly in my browser...that's using it independently. I have another machine where I crawl other topics that I share with peers. You can even use it crawl your own databases to be able to search and get quick results. It's just a really awesome tool.

their website says ,
Why does YaCy show different results from Google?-
We expect YaCy to show different results than Google, for several reasons. As long as YaCy has only a few peers working, it cannot compete with Google. Hence the importance of having a great number of YaCy peers working. But even then YaCy will provide different and better results than Google, since it can be adapted to the user's own preferences and is not influenced by commercial aspects.-
can please explain this?

DT, this video inspire me to research to see if there is a decentralized internet, I know about Gopher, but I saw there are many projects that claim to be a decentralized internet, DWeb being one of them. Can you please do a video about this topic? I want to completely go invisible and I feel this is a great start, thank you!

This app didn't work. Couldn't find any results.
Just errors. Even if it worked, why would anyone ever use this?
I mean, a search engine only indexed by people on the same p2p network sounds like a bad idea. You're not gonna find many results.
I'm sticking with duckduckgo.

I'd like to hear some discussion on using known Yacy instances as your search engine vs. running a Yacy instance yourself. Running your own instance might be overkill unless you plan on contributing to the network or want additional privacy.

so i've downloaded yacy and i love the core concepts around it but actually using it as a web search engine is awful, i never find the results i want on it. Idk how search engines work but how does stuff like this get improved?

There is no documentation to speak of and the user interface is horribly complicated. I can see the appeal of it, but I would be afraid that the lack of a good gui and documentation shows the direction of the project.

Will this speed up after a while? (Also, I barely get any search results, and sometimes I get really strange results. It's like I search for Tom and Jerry, and it shows me pictures of Sylvester and Tweety instead.

thanks a million DT, I just downloaded this and I love it!! I appreciate all that you do to keep us all in the loop about privacy and free and open source topics.........you're the best!

If you are not running a vpn or anonymize your data in any way , then your traffic queries and IP address can be tracked back to you, which makes this search engine useless and dangerous.
