within 2-3 years intel could have 7nm EUV going (which would be equivalent to tsmc 5nm) and this chip could be an hedt chip hitting 5ghz and with higher ipc. more like the 7980xe. intel has been stagnant on process tech, staying at 14nm for so long, but they have gotten a lot out of 14nm. the real hold up has been lack of a new light source. im assuming it will be EUV but whatever it is is close now and we are going to be seeing things advance as rapidly in the next year few years as it was slow back then.
i think an intel 5nm or tsmc 3nm will be about the limit but we could get there pretty quick, whatever that limit may be. i think 10nm intel will be possible with single patterning and 7nm with dual (which most fabs are pretty good at) which means large dies will be practical. may have to do quad patterning for 5nm but that could be a mobile thing for awhile just as intel will probalby make 10nm mobile for the power savings first.
i love what amd is doing but i like to see intels wares too

-1080p 144htz is all you need in a laptop- -fullscreen AA would be needed(1080p is 141PPI at 15. 6) and more performance gained. 1440p(188PPI) 15. 6inch with a 2080Laptop, honestly 4k is more ideal at 282PPI on a 15. 6 size, I might have to do an experiment on this and gather a few laptops to see If say -In gaming- what would have less of a battery impact, a greater resolution on the screen, like 4k versus running a 4k screen with AA not on or at lowest settings versus a 1080p 120-144htz panel with AA fully cranked. My theory is that during gaming the 4k panel would fair better off due to the lack of GPU strained resources on AA, I'll try it with 2 models of Alienware laptops as you can get 4k and a normal 1080p display in the same model probably with 2070s when they come out. ---------.

you could have 4 artists on VM's and 7 cores a piece and then over the weekend have it setup as a render server working through each of their projects one at a time. higher priority projects would get done first. and it wouldnt really cost that much more than 4 seperate workstations but would give you a powerful render server if you only needed on occasionally. i know its not the best value for the home enthusiast but im not spending a grand for a TR or skylake X either

its not weird its called a xeon, they segment them between server and workstation all the time and they've put those workstation xeons in the regular consumer space plenty of times too. It's just another 'workstation' xeon that they've re-purposed from their server xeons.

This new Intel Xeon CPU is nothing be vaporware since no one outside of reviewers will ever see it. It's not a real retail part like AMD's Threadripper. Total cost of Threadripper vs the Xeon is a no contest win for AMD.

Gordon, server is appropriate for an -instance. - Server is a metaphor. Even -Server- as a piece of hardware is a metaphor. It doesn't actually serve you an appetizer, main dish, or even a drink.

It's a shame how bias some reviewers and some publications have become. I get it, we all have bills to pay but at what cost do you sell out the same people keeping your heads above water.

Gordon says there's going to be a billboard outside saying -There will be no Thunderbolt in the X-570 boards this year. -
Is it possible to construct an edible billboard?
