A Shocking Reason to Work in 16-Bit! Tips

I'm going to share with live demonstrations as to when and why using either 16-bit or 8-bit in Photoshop! Carlos: The talk about 16-bit is always very beautiful, enthusiastic but when it comes to heavy retouching with 200, 300 layers of adjustments, smart objects with smart filters applied, with transparencies and a ton of other things then the wonderful 16-bit becomes the horrible 16-bit. When they release the Macbook Pro with a quantum processor I will think about retouching photos in 16 bits. Until then 8 bits rule!

Isn't it true that if you export a 16 bit image as a jpeg it is automatically changed to 8 bit? Does it even make a difference if I were to first convert a 16 bit image to 8 bit in Photoshop and then export it as a jpeg? A 16 bit PS image exported to an 8 bit jpeg, or a 8 bit PS image exported to an 8 bit jpeg-- what's the difference?

Thank you for your videos! they are amazing! I have a question though. I don't understand why I get banding ONLY when I export. When I'm working, everything looks fine, but when I export the document, the banding appears in the shadows and flat background. It didn't happen before, and it's driving me insane. Please help?

hey I'm very interested and I'd love to get reply from you
you've got quite the studio setup, do you use it only for videos or do you record music?
since you mix and master your voice quite professionally this studio can't be used only video production. you can record hip hop artists too

reply

It doesn't work for me and perhaps I'm doing something wrong but I've tried merging all the layers and converting to 8-bit prior to exporting/saving as a jpg, but when I open the jpg file and check with a solar curve, there is considerable banding. Could you possibly solar check an exported jpg?

i know its irrelevant to ask this here but im literally dying here. is there any way to make the ul scaling or display resolution smaller or make the canvas area bigger in photoshop 2020? i mean really small like photoshop cc 2014 basic look. i appreciate if u answer it ty

Awesome, i was just watching some of your older videos on banding. I'm working on a very purple-pink-orange-ish image of palm trees and a sunset. Lots of curves/color manipulation though, so this will surely come handy. Unmesh you're a pro. A master!

Maybe I'm too dim to understand, but if he exports his pieces for 8-bit platforms, why design in 16-bit? I know he said it helps with color manipulation but outside of that, is there any other reason? Thanks in advance!
reply

Visible banding is still an issue in certain gradients, no matter what bit depth you use. Increasing bit depth is sometimes helpful, but not a cure-all. In those cases, the best option is to add texture in some form.

even if i export it in 16 bit only, is it going to create any major issue while rendering colors on social platforms. i have been working and exporting on 16 bit only and so far haven't noticed anything negative
reply

Awesome reason to use 16 bit. I can now hopefully get rid of my banding issues when lifting up dark shadows from D750 when lightening too much it shows banding. This should work with 16 bit. Thanks.

FROM PHILIPPINES HERE!

reply

Hi Unmesh, thank you for your great tutorials. I have a question, not really related to the Bit depth, do you have a stylus or pad you can recommend to for working with Photoshop?
Thanks

reply

Hello and thank you for your amazing videos,
I have a simple question: does your video means that we can always save in 8 bits et change mode to 16 bits only during working in photoshop?

reply

Awesome video. I really love to watch your videos.
Please can you tell how to scroll the layers or anything by stylus or graphics table. Because they don't give scroll wheel

reply

Why do we need to keep the original file in 16 bit if by only changing the mode to 16 bits it solves all display issues? Is there a dynamique benefits (luminosity) and not color issue?
reply

Actually, 16 but in Adobe Photoshop is really 15 bit + 1 (32769 levels not 65536 levels) as this gives them a true mid point and also makes for faster calculations.
reply

why do you merge->change the mode from 16 bit to 8 bit?
can't you just export it or save as a jpg? there is no 16 bit jpg anyway.
or do i miss something?

reply

After working on 32bit I want to export the file but the 'export as' dialog box appears and continuous 'processing' is showing. What can be done to fix this?
