Photoshop 2022's New Depth Blur is INSANE! But

we will stress test the brand new Photoshop 2022's updated version of the Depth Blur feature, which is a part of Neural Filters. This time around, there are major changes like processing on-device instead of the cloud, and way more refined results among many other additions. But still, the question remains, can we finally use it now? That's what we will find out in this episode. Also, we will put this feature head-to-head with Luminar's Portrait Bokeh AI and see how it holds up

I hope photoshop people get to watch this, cuz seriously this is a huge drawback from that feature. I recently learned about it and I like it a lot, really being able to blur a scene the way you want to at the click of a button literally is awesome, but the problem is not being able to correct the mistakes, here I thought I was doing it wrong and that I'm dumb for not being able to figure it out lol although I came up with ways to go around it anyway, Hopefully, this is something they address in future updates.
Edit, I skipped the intro lol and I see that they are watching. amazing

Hello Unmesh.
I'm so happy that I found you teaching Photoshop, but too late, you're teaching so good I spend a big amount of money to learn photoshop in Afghanistan, but the teachers wasn't able to teach me and Photoshop was getting harder to learn for me, and then I searched to learn photoshop online, and I found your video Photoshop Tutorial for complete beginners' and I knew that I can learn photoshop from you because your teaching method is different.
I just want your instruction to learn photoshop.
A bundle of thanks.

Very sharp review. I noticed you just had to turn on the Depth Blur. I had to download all the Neural Filters before using. Was yours like that? I would have thought it would have downloaded with the upgrade. It didn't take long, I'm not upset because it's not a big deal, just curious. And jaggery would be Mick Jaggery, or what you wanted was jagged. You can add a Y or. ish. You really do speak excellent English, though. I'm a big fan and have learned a lot from you.

Great video!
So I just tried this on an image I took with a Samsung smartphone. I thought the result, with a small reduction in opacity was pretty amazing. Maybe I just got lucky, but I think this might be a good starting point for some small adjustments. No, I wouldn't use it to print a high resolution image without some small changes, but for social media sharing I thought it looked pretty great! Maybe it has improved a bit since the video?

Although the Depth Blur missed elements to keep in focus like the girls backpack, if you output as a layer, you can use a quick mask and paint back the backpack from the layer below, so there is a workaround. The bush to the left looked best with some blur which Luminar AI did. All in all they both have their strengths. Luminars brushes are very useful though for masking areas.

Most of the photos seen processed were shot almost parallel to the ground plane, ie camera looking forward. Im wondering if the algorithm can cater for shots angled non parallel to the ground plane, eg when looking up a tall building, or downward looking down from a tall building. Or if a ohoto does not have any clues of leading lines.

Unmesh, I'm still getting garbage results from Adobe Ps' Depth Blur neural feature. (Feb. 2022 - Win 10. Every time I use it in the current release I get a solid black overlay over my image. It seems to happen every time I move the Blur Strength slider. It completely obliterates my image.

If you save the photo as NEW LAYER MASKED, you can modify the mask. Although it's not in the neural filter, you can make changes to the mask afterwards.
Just wondering if its's possible to changes the blur effect after you saved it, I couldn't find this?

Hi Unmesh - amazing review, and thanks for objectivity and keeping us on our toes. Feedback is taken to the team, we'll continue refining the ML quality, the user experience and use the power of Photoshop and masking capabilities!

Thanks Unmesh! Great insights and review as always. Loved the comparison with Luminar. As a photographer I do feel isn't it easier creating natural blur by shooting f/1. 8 at 85mm or higher? What are your thoughts please?

I love your videos
I would question the quality of a Photoshop effect though. As a photographer, fake bokeh will always look fake.
Not a reflection on yourself or your videos though. You didn't make the plugin.

For heavens sake! If you want to blur the background, get a real camera, and set it to a wide aperture. Job done. People are forgetting the basic skills of photography.

I would have loved this feature in Adobe but because of the fact that you cannot adjust what is and what isnt in focus. Im so frustrated with that

You can easily copy the incorrectly masked areas from the original image and paste them on top of blurred image, restoring them as they should be.

When you output first layer you can shit+ctrl+f a few times as needed and you'll get a more in-depth blur. Thankyou for your continued support.

This man is not just teaching us photoshop but also he's improving Photoshop with his amazing feedback. Keep up the good work. You are amazing.

Thank you very much for your great tutorial. I believe the answer, for now is to own a copy of both programs, and choose the best, for each case.

PS V 23. 0. 1 still have issues with Depth Blur. When try to use, a message We've temporary disable this filter because an error. appears.
reply

For the hard edges on the hair I just save the filter to a new layer with mask, then edit the mask using refine edge. Done =)
