Here are the problems I have encountered with Google Maps. They are intermittent. 1) If you re offline and decide to open Google Maps, you may get a blank grey screen with a blue dot on it even if you have already downloaded an offline map. So make sure that you open Google Maps when you re still online before you head out. But be warned, your battery will drain pretty fast. 2) If you re offline and your Google Map does work, when you search for something and make your selection, Google Map will zoom in on it but may not have that orange pointer bubble. So you're still not sure how to get there. 3) If you re offline and you click on directions (by car), the map may disappear leaving you with a blank grey screen and a blue line with the route to your destination. 4) When you click start the map comes back with vocal turn-by-turn directions. But as you drive, you may encounter a turn you weren t expecting. That s because Google Navigation had inadvertently changed car routing to pedestrian routing. 5) The GPS receiver on our smartphone may be weak, so that blue dot may freeze somewhere making you miss your turn. Then when the GPS picks up the signal again, you may end up going around and around in circles because the blue dot is either jumping around or freezing somewhere. 6) Bring a real GPS with updated routeable maps installed and make sure you have a passenger who knows how to look at both maps.

I forgot how to save my offline maps in GMaps, and this was a helpful video. Now I can go on my canoe trip this weekend in Bennett Springs MO, and not have to worry about low cell signal and trying to retrieve a map of the area. I'll be able to see the trails and rivers of the area with the offline maps, I'll stick my android in a waterproof bag so I can see it all. Thanks TechGumbo!

Im taking a trip and i want to put in the map a different starting point. And then save it offline. Cell phone coverage is terrible. So.. How can i, who lives on the West coast, put in an East coast address as my starting point and then put in my destination address to access it later offline?

Since you can install, some area of the map it is actually quite useful but it would be way better, if you were able to install the whole map even if it costs alot of storage since most phones these days have big storage and most them dont know what to do with that it would be quite good.

If you want to navigate offline why don't you use the app osmand+ it navigates offline ( no data ) there is a free and payed version it works as good as a tom tom , even better because it's easy and on your phone . And the cards are open source so always up to date

The video is very nice, but I am from Germany and this feature is not new to me. I know that this exists for like half a year and I don't really know why almost no comment says that he knows it. Whatever, the video is high quality. Thumbs up!

What about saving directions offline? The setting is to save an actual route offline is gone. Also saving offline maps really only works for a selected area like if you want to know the layout of a town or city... Not if you need to travel.

Thanks for that, but you didn't say whether you can use navigation off line too with voice directions. Once you download a map area, can you then type in an address within the area downloaded and will it navigate you to that address? Thanks!
