The Forgotten Back Exercise (UNLOCK HIDDEN STRENGTH)

Some back exercises get more attention than others, but that's not always a good thing. In fact, in this video I show you the one back exercise that gets overlooked more than any other. The straight arm pushdown is perhaps one of the greatest back exercises because of its ability to not only help you build bigger, wider lats but because of the stability it creates in your entire upper body. The back and lats specifically play a vital role in coordinating the strength of the upper and lower body. When you have a back and glutes that play well together you have a much stronger body functioning as a whole. This back exercise is just one example of that. In fact, the straight arm pushdown helps to groove the function of the lats for a deadlift. When you perform a deadlift you have to be sure that you are engaging your back and lats as hard as you possibly can. You need to contract your lats by internally rotating your shoulders and keeping your elbows tight to your sides. From here, you execute the lift with very little leakage of power. You now can lift more weight as the force is preserved from the lower body up through your arms. The same can be said of many exercises for back. When you maximize the strength of your back you can turn any back exercise into an exercise for a thicker back, wider back or stronger back

Hey Athlean X, sorry I dont know your name bro, Thats are a good exercise, Ilike to explore some posibilities, do some like old school muscle control, I like calisthenics and weight training today I put a extra effort in my back doing some internal rotations and putting my straight arm full back, Like a back lever in calisthenics but with some weights in my hands, hitting my triceps like hell, grip and back in a particular way, is a good option if you want to try, and if you like maybe do a video ajaja, sorry my shitty english, cheers form chile dude, good work!

hey jeff, topics you haven't/should covered.
1. People overlooking Carbs. lots of videos on protein imp, why not a video about imp. of carbs, types of carbs, how do they work, how much of them do we actually need, etc.
2. I have heard that there is a limit of lean muscle we can put in a year (ofcourse depending on body type, genes, effective workout and all. I think i have hit that plateau, how to deal with it? i went from 118lbs to 146 lbs no fat, in 4 months. And now workouts seem ineffective, i do get huge pumps but no actual gains. How do break this?

I love this workout and also hate it at the same time. This Straight arm push down I thought it's a similar traction with dumbbell pullover and cable lat pulldown so I rise the pulling point really high above my head to get the full stretch and now I feel a sharp pain on my right shoulder both front head and lateral and it hurt.
it was my last workout so I did.
3xset twohanded bar- 12 reps
2xset one handed D-ring - 15 reps
I feel my outer chest, lats and a sharp pain on my shoulder head!

Thanks Jeff! I was look for this info to build the lower back. Knowing how the back works is very helpful. It would be great if we could do a video on just different main muscle body parts upper and maybe then another video for lower body parts. In this back video the reason why like it so much is that Jeff explains how the back muscles work with the lifts. You guys do a really great job really appreciate the videos

This looks like a brilliant exercise. but unfortunately we don't have a machine like that at our gym. We have something similar, but the cables are about 10 ft apart. Can I still do this exercise with it, or can it be done with a single cable and a bar attached to it that is about the width of the shoulders?
Thanks for your help!

I understand what Jeff is saying. i highly recommend farmer walks with straps that really builds a solid core because you have to stabilize heavy weight with good posture and builds huge traps and legs. When you squat your traps make the weight feel less heavier and your whole structure is just more solid.

I've done dead lifts before in a friend's basement when working out for a high school graduation project. Is there an intermediate excercise I could be doing or should I combine the deadlift with another excercise to be lifting the same weight when I go to the gym? Does anyone have a good idea?

Whenever I try this exercise, I can only feel tension in my abs and nothing in my last, despite however hard I try to squeeze my lats. Is this a normal thing I have to get through? Is there a correction I can use to make this exercise more useful for me?

Been doing these but I liked your cue to squeeze at arm pits. cant wait till back day again to incorperate that more n get a better contraction! its the little things like that tip that i watch these vids for. great advice as usual. keep it up.
