How to Pull for Bigger Lats (WORKS INSTANTLY)

If you want to build bigger, wider lats you have to pull. I-m talking about exercises like bent over rows, lat pulldowns and pullups to name a few. That said, unless you learn how to pull the way I-m showing you in this video, you will be leaving a lot of lat gains on the table. Today I show you how to increase the contraction of the lats on every pulling back exercise you do. The best part about this back and lat exercise tweak is that you can do it right away and feel the difference. It starts with a bit of anatomy however. When you look at the latissimus dorsi muscle you see that it actually isn-t in the best line of pull. It wraps around from it-s origin on the spine to the humerus and has to make a turn in order to do so. When we do exercises like rows or pulldowns, the lats never are placed in a direct line of pull since they are blocked anatomically by our own torso. We can fix this however by using one arm to set the body up to be in a better position. All you have to do is allow one arm to stay extended without allowing the plates to rest on the stack. In other words, you want to have some tension on the arm that is technically resting. What this does is cause the torso to rotate a bit towards the side you are pulling. Not only does this clear more room for your shoulder blade to travel (which is indirectly affected by the lats since they will affect the spine which is connected to the scapula by other muscles, but it will place the lat in a direct line of pull between it-s origin and insertion. This makes for a stronger peak contraction on the lats and allows you to lift with more strength. Over time, the more powerful and strong contractions that you amass from workout to workout, the more capable you will be of building that muscle. The lats can often be one of those trickier muscles for people to build for this very reason. The strength of lat contraction just isn-t what it needs to be to maximally deliver gains. Putting the science back in strength in this video to help you get more out of your back training and build bigger lats. It doesn-t end there however. If you are looking for a complete workout program that trains your body with the latest that science has to offer and speeds up the results that you would normally otherwise see by doing so, head to and get the ATHLEAN-X Training System

can you do a video on power lifting techniques? I have my own personal technique(s) but I'm not very sure if alot of people are aware of how to actually lift super heavy. that being said, I say this because I see in slot of video trainers or uploaded suggesting that the person should use a lighter weight in such they should be able to manage and control. allbeit while that technique is not incorrect, certain power lifting techniques can help someone make HUGE strength gains very quickly (along with proper dieting) that will stay with someone PERMANENTLY because we all know the concept or stigma of temporary gains. the type of strength gains that only last as long as you're training or excercising

Hi Jeff, I've been watching your videos for a while now, I was just wondering if you could do a video or give some information about teenagers in terms of body fat, I've been going to the gym for 5 months and have seen some significant results due to watching and taking advice from your videos. But despite doing a lot of skipping (and having a good diet) to try and burn fat, I still have a fatty stomach. I don't know whether it's do to with growing but was just wondering if you could give some tips on this situation. Thanks, and keep up the good work

Hi, im 17 years old and i train 6-7 times per week (gym, sprints, jogging. I never eat unnecessary calories and I always try to eat healthy. But i am not loosing weight. I have friends in my age that can eat like 100 chocolate bars and drink 50 Coca Cola and still be lean. What i am doing wrong? Am i training to much our what can i do to loose wight? It feels like if I just eat one cheat meal (like BBQ) I go back to square, where i once started.

Although everybody seems to be automatically convinced about this, I think this is trying too hard.
Your elbow may seem to travel further back in space but that doesn't necessarily mean it does relative to the body. The attachment of the lat actually gets away from the body laterally (namely, abduction) which means the muscle elongates at the very end since one of the functions of lats is the opposite of that, namely adduction.

its the same idea with one arm db rows right, we do them one arm so can get that extra range of motion on one side while the other side is resting.
EXCEPT when we do one arm bent over dumbbell rows, we don't want to torso to shift because then its not lats thats doing the work, but the torso, am i in the right direction with this?

I love all of Jeff's videos. But this one seems a little weird. Maybe 'cause it seems like too much effort for too little benefit. But who am I to say? Thank you anyway Jeff for all your hard work and all your tips! I owe my current body to you and your programs!

Great tips. The biggest mistake I see with guys trying to work lats in the gym is using too much weight preventing them for ever engaging and connecting with the lats. People turn an exercise like the Lat Pull-down into some kind of reverse clean and press lol

yea ive tried a 1 arm cable lat pull down. felt so much better. let it strectch all the way to the top and pull it back all the way down with a twisting motion where you body is turning the the other way of your pull. so much of a better contraction

Hey Jeff, I have a very wide torso. Is there a way for me to slim that out? I'm currently on a low carb diet and my abs are showing but it looks strange with the wide torso. What muscle group should I work on?
