Over 20 years of experience in the swimming world has taught me that there are 6 main skills for a long successful swimming career. 1- Adaptability Water is not the natural habitat for humans, so for swimmers, the more time you spend in the water, the better you will feel in it. 2- Technique kinesthetic intelligence, mobility and breathe control are the most important factors for a good swimming technique. 3- Endurance How long you can swim fast without stopping or slowing down is obviously important. Some of that is affected by genetics. However, this is what we mostly try to improve in our training. through intervals, rests, all-out swims, paces etc. 4- Mental balance There are two components of a healthy successful mindset- Mental toughness and the ability to enjoy oneself. 5- Social skills The quality relationships you have with your fellow swimmers, competitors and coach will be one of the main reasons why you will continue to improve. 6- Skill transfer The ability to transfer what you learn outside the pool and bring it in creative ways to improve your swimming will most likely be what distinguishes you from the rest. I swam competitively since I was 8. Joined the Navy and became a SAR swimmer. During an exercise I damaged my spine between my shoulder blades. Ever since it hurt to breathe rotate my torso and even get out of bed. I lost weight, joined the Army, and tore my right adductor muscle. That kept me from working out. Running and cycling were out and the Army isn't known for their swimming program lol Now I'm 100% VA disabled and can barely walk. but through Upstate Warrior Solution in SC I was able to get back in the water. Oh, the feeling. the weight off my spine. I could breathe again. Although my freestyle was about 40 years antiquated lol I am getting help to tweak my bad habits and swim more efficiently. It has been a journey. I've wanted to quit. But, the saying, If a shark stops swimming it dies kept ringing in my head and motivated me. I've started lifting dumbells and made a mini-gym in the garage. This guy on the videos is absolutely legit and is a Godsend. Bless you, Sir for all you've done for those of us trying to get better every day. We are starting a Veteran swim team and our motto is, Swim Better. If you swim better you get better in every aspect of your life. I want to encourage you to keep at it. Push yourself. Every day in the pool is 1000% better than sitting in the recliner. Get it and share your successes so we can celebrate WITH you! Swim on!

Kinesthetic intelligence, these are the words I was looking for. Being in the water with two frozen shoulders, the only relaxing moment during this period of my life. I learned that I could move my body without hurting my shoulders. The water was helping, carrying the weight of my arms, gentle movements of my body moved my totally relaxed arms just enough to stay out of the painzone but helping to relax. Standing in the water bending my knees just a little bit, so my body would sink a bit but my arms would float up a bit. A wonderful moment, I wished at that moment I could stay there the rest of the day. It took months before I could swim just a little bit, after a year I could swim a bit freestyle, relaxing was still the main goal, I learned how to move my body so I could lift my arm out of the water, how the water was helping me supporting my body, giving resistence just as much as I wanted and needed. Now after three years I am swimming freestyle daily, the beautifull thing of going for a swim is when you to tired to train you can always float a bit, just moving your arms and legs, figuring out how to keep your head, or how to breath mor efficiently, no need to get tired just getting new energy.

Swimming among other sports is really a mental sport. I can count on my fingers how many months I have spend crying because I have been training for the 11th place, and I knew I can be only at this level and I can never be a real winner. But after this I am the toughest one, my pet dog died and I didnt even cry. I am used to this pain, mental and physical. I can do anything, so I become a nuclear physicist. I am not the best one, I am average, but I am used to this and I still love swimming, and I am coach.

I swim by myself. I made it fun by mixing my drills. I know I push myself at times but I know how to take it easy to just feel the joy of swimming. I do it for competition and for fun and to stay younger. I am 60 this year. I do 4X IM workout everyday for 6 days and swim 1, 000 yards to a mile for 6 days. I will continue until I see the Lord.

I don't agree with the last section of part five. You keep going because you enjoy yourself, not because of your relationship with other swimmers. I'm not saying that you may not have these relationships, but even if you didn't, it would be ok and you'd swim for your own sake.

You have an interesting sense of humor. I caught one video by some one else who pointed out how important it is to be able to relax away from the pool or what ever your sport is. As said by Robert Heinlein in one of his books, 'Specialization is for insects. '

I ThinkCentre, in this moment of my life that it all comes down to breathing. Breathing perfectly, control every minuscule moment Is what keeps me motivated. It can become like some sort of trance. And that Is what keeps me swimming, and the faster the better: )

light weight to make a move flexible and how you are so stronger in your arms and legs and all body balance with fish flexible.
also it one of control the breathe so fast and breathe control that in your internal body was heathly.

I kind of need this I haven't done any exercise in months and my legs felt like jelly after 8 lengths. It was made harder with my swimming shorts so I've purchased a speedy aquashort, hopefully I can get better.

The thing about social skills is that people move up to another level or either I do, so is there a point to build a strong friendship with someone even though I know it will have to come to an end soon?

if i was being mathathic then i like to founding the equation of water physics and body weight and force works. and flexible.
i like to prove by math equation

From Yogi Berra, the late great catcher from the New York Yankees, It's 90% mental and 10% in your head. Being able to maintain any mental balance with the physical is half the battle.

I do swimming after my boxing session just to relapse.
Swimming is great but I experience cramps pretty often on my feet, not a big deal though it happens when I consume less water.
