Gannet Peak Via Wells Creek // Summit or Die - Mountain trips

The day after my failed attempt to summit Gannet via Tourist Creek I texted Aaron and Chase asking if they wanted to go back with me and make another attempt. The next week I was once again in the parking lot at Green River Lakes Campground suiting up at 3am for another attempt at this daunting mountain. This time we were going to try and summit via the Wells Creek route which requires some rock climbing when the water is high. With some rope, harnesses, and a small rack of gear we headed off down the trail with a heavy load on our backs. I dont actually believe in the motto summit or die. Summits for the most part are just points on a map. Whether you summit them or not matters almost not at all in the grand scheme of things. However, I did go out this time with a more iron clad determination to summit, conditions permitting of course. The phrase gives you a general idea of my mental state as I left the van the morning of this attempt and I also thought its dramatic tone might get me an extra view or two. Im not above shameless click baiting

Well done boys. That's quite an achievement. Super human really. Interested what dates you did this. Looks like maybe mid to late July? Just wrapped 14 days in the Fitz on the other side a few weeks back poking around the headwaters of Torrey and Dinwoody creeks. It was downright HOT for the 2nd year in a row. As in not good/spooky hot at 10-12k feet. Glaciers are melting fast and it's a tragedy. Anyhoo keep up the unreal, harrowing human feats!

In my mind there is nothing mediocre about you guys. Your fitness level is amazing. I sometimes think you edit the video down from 7-10 days of work to make it look like you do all that in one day. Thats the only way I can imagine being able to do it. I am 70 years old so that may have something to do with that view. Thank you for letting me live vicariously through you.

Nice job bagging the Peak!
Question for you: In many of your videos I see people wearing what appears to be either knee-high socks, or leg warmers. Its hard to tell which they are due to the gaiters. Id be interested to know which they are and if you have any recommendations or product links.

As an even more mediocre amateur I love watching your videos for inspiration on future adventures. I find myself constantly looking at your gear. Particularly shoes. What shoes are you choosing for something like this that requires running, boulder hopping, wet rock and scrambling/climbing?

They're crazy. I would have backpacked in. Then woke up and sent it. Then back to camp for chill. Then stay another night or two because the Winds are majestic af. Then packed out. Lovin life. Everytime I do when I'm there!

Excellent video. Great job! I've gone through both Tourist Creek & Wells Creek. Went up Wells when water was low and didn't need climbing gear. I still prefer Tourist Creek. Wells was scary.

Danny, you have such a gift with filming and cinematography. I film my hikes and then I watch you and Im amazed by the effort and dedication you put into these. You inspire me man.

You guys can greatly expand your possibilities by learning to paragliding and using lightweight equipment. Run/climb up and fly down. The entire setup can weigh as little as 1 kg.

Golly your videos are spectacular. However this one was a little scary. FWIW these videos don't need to be extreme for me to love em. Just keep stoking on the landscapes and peaks.

Amazed how shitty you guys eat and are still fit enough to do this stuff. You should probably get a CAC scan and see if your goos and proceed junk is causing disease.
reply

Why would you not being rock shoes and light helmets. It's not that much weight. Cut weight and play the roulette, statistically you are going to end up bust

I'd love to know more about that rappel setup. It looks like a cross-loaded carabiner and some nuts left behind, but is that part of a retrieval setup?
reply

Yeah, Jeremy Renner just totally took an afternoon and casually strolled up there (while carrying an unconscious guy. Very realistic writing.

great trip report. The wind rivers is by far the best hiking in the continental USA. Most remote and challenging area. Love that hike
reply

Noob question: How does it work with the rock hooks and the carabiners? Did you just leave them there? Were they already there?
reply

By the way I just noticed that you got a haircut in between your Gannett attempts. Was all that hair too much weight? Haha

Love these videos! Love the tunes too! Im getting ready to summit Mt Adams and need a huge playlist. What songs are used?
reply

how do people get the rope down from the anchor point? do you just pull it through when you've made it through the move?
reply

It blows when you can't complete a hike/summit the first time. It's a long, lonely, very quiet ride back home.
reply

Come out to the Cascades in Washington. Some gnarly jagged peaks are beckoning for the Mediocre crew to ascend them.
