Weve been wanting to climb Gannet Peak Wyomings highest point for a while now. The peak possess a lot of challenges from weather, distance, and route finding to river crossings and possible climbing depending on which route you choose. In this episode we decided to attempt Gannet via Tourist Creek. The other route, Wells Creek, appears to be a more direct approach but depending on water levels can either be a breeze or require some climbing that has turned many groups back. So not wanting to risk a turn around we chose the route with more boulder hoping but less risk of getting turned around. Its a long day no matter which route you choose with around 20 miles of trail and 20 miles of bushwhacking and boulder hoping. Physically Im not worried but mentally Im not sure Im prepared for the beat down that is Gannet Peak

I'm John, Cathy's husband. Did Gannet Back In 84 with 4 of my best friends from California. I was living out side of Cody at the time. We spent about 5 days
going from the east side by the Wind River up Gannet via the goose neck Glacier. The weather was perfect except when we summited huge cloud bank, no view
whatsoever, We descended the summit and headed west over dinwoody pass. what a kick ass time. Good luck with your next attempt!

My mother is 93 with advancing dementia. She doesn't know who we are, but she knows you guys! Watching back to back to back to back videos of Mediocre Amateurs is honestly one of her favorite things to do. She laughs at your humor, is amazed at your awesome photography, and sometimes you give her the willies. Your videos have truly been a lifesaver to us as we look for activities she'll enjoy. Thank you for keeping it clean!

You guys made the right decision. Winds are a beautiful and yet brutal place. Not as brutal as the Absarokas, but pretty brutal. Not much room for mistakes up there, especially on foot.
The worst part of the entire journey to that section of the Winds is that dirt road the ATV/ORV Brigade have absolutely decimated. Green River Lakes access used to be one of my favorites into the Winds. Not anymore.

Your best video yet, still beast mode. What do you think 1am start? Or did you notice any halfway descent camps at mile 10ish before going up the creek. Im at 57/58 14ers in CO, going to need something else soon lol. Also if you are looking for a challenge I just did Chicago basin four 14ers 44 miles from purgatory since the train is washed out this year not many people. Take care.

Really enjoyed another great vid guys, and a great call on turning back. The mountain will be there for another day, and the lessons learned vids are just as good as the vids in which you have success: actually the vids in which you fail (for want of a better word) make the ones in which you succeed all the more satisfying.

Guys, you are monsters, heroes and wise men. Always in awe of your achievements and now in awe of your sound decision. Incredible footage, music, ambience, dialogue and inspiration. Bring back Blake, keep the awesome dialogue going and shame to see Christoff didnt join you on this bushwhacking adventure!

Awesome video! And a good call on the bail - Been on the summit of Gannett twice, grew up in the winds. Always backpacked in with gear and still thought it was a beast! My last summit (August 1 2020) we came in and out via Torrey Lake/Glacier Trail - a hump, but killer views up Wilson Meadows

I'll just echo what some others have said already. It's refreshing to see the summit attempt fails - adds that human component. So often, it's epic success after success with failures being hidden away from public view. Having numerous failed summit attempts myself, it's nice to see this.

When will you do video on your gear/food for hikes like these? Whats in your bag, what are you eating, why did you wear the clothing that you have on. How do you get enough water? How often do you stop and refuel? What supplements are you taking during the hikes/runs

Hearing that Danny is intimidated by anything is probably the most human thing he has ever said. Matt, very jealous of the I don't need to summit mentality, something that I struggle with all the time and know I need to be better at. As always, great video guys.

Gannett in a day via Tourist Creek has been done, but without knowing every little facet of the route up Tourist Creek and the subsequent approach to the West Face, the odds are you won't get close. Do your research. Starting at sunrise is not gonna do it.

Hey guys I like your videos! Im just starting to trail run more. I run on Salomons sense escape 2 shoes. After wearing them down quite a bit Ive been looking at upgrading to the speed cross 5s. What are your thoughts on the speed cross 5s?
reply

Well shot! Having attempted the same feat in a day, but via Wells Creek, I feel ya. We summited but got benighted at Scott Lake and ran out the next morning via Tourist. Definitely big and remote! Tough stuff.

I'm a super mediocre status quo average amateur, so it was good to see you guys turn around for once. :) It gives me hope and validates my aching body after my excursions. Love your videos

I would love to see yall do the Circle Peaks or Gorge Lakes Loop in RMNP. Mt. Ida to Chief Cheley to Crack top to Mt. Julian to Terra Tomah and link back to the Mt. Ida trail back down.
reply

Welcome to the Winds! When you got off the trail, I told myself there's no way they'll make! so close but probably the best and smartest decision was to turn around an underrated skill!
reply

Good decision you guys are pretty hardcore (not mediocre) but still I think Gannet peak in a day may be out of reach. And there is nothing wrong with doing this in three days.
reply

Nice effort guys. I also attempted Gannet on 7/27 with plans to do it in a day from Elkhart TH, but unfortunately no summit either. A long day with a lot of variables to negotiate!

Amazing area. The wind rivers has turned my back also. Almost to the peak of Gannett. You guys are human after all. Such a remote area the wind rivers love that I live 3 hours away
reply

Huge RT mileage and elevation, you would think to start a couple hours before sunrise and hit Wells creek at sunrise to optimize the whole day but still props on the attempt!
