Banff National Park // Skiing the Hector - Mountain trips

Ive spent years looking at the winter weather in Banff National Park. Two things always stood out, its freezing cold and it snows a lot. So when the temperature hit the upper 20s after a snow storm I decided it was time. Unfortunately the winds had made short work of the new snow but the temperatures were agreeable to someone from my Latitude. With only three days to see as much of Banff and the surrounding area as we could. We tried to make the most of our time, starting with some window shopping from a majestic perch on Mount Hector

I want to apologize for the lack of snow in Utah. I feel at this point every time I go out west the snow pretty much sucks. For many years I could not miss and I had some awesome trips. The last four have sucked hoping things turn around by next Monday. I have stopped even checking snow conditions. I am from the Northeast so I can ski lousy snow well. I just dont want to. This looked like an incredible adventure. Your endurance is second to none. My back hurt just watching. Thanks for creating such great content. Take care

Building the brand. that uneven wind blown snow condition is called Sasutrugi and it can hide some nasty large pockets of air under thin layers of snow that has blown in erratic directions forming a very weak layer, or even a bubble of trapped air under the snow. awaiting loading from more snow, unsuspecting skiers or marmots, etc. to allow it to release.
I love your clear concise and rapid approaches and adventures, EXCELLENT! stay safe!

Conditions like this is why I use a regular pair of skis, and not lightweight 'touring' skis for my romps in the mountains. sturdy boots and skis w tech binders. I've tried the whole lightweight carbon ski thing before and they just can't hold their own unless it's fairly light pow, or perfect corn. I'd always get rattled and chattered to death on those things, and they were easily deflected by firm irregularities on the surface.

The main reason people typically wait until March/April is because the snowpack isnt deep enough to safely travel the glacier (people have died on that glacier, its heavily crevassed with man eaters all over the ski line. Avalanche danger is the other reason.
Glad yall had fun, its a great run when its in condition and the view from the summit is sublime.

Avalanche reporting are always preface with It Depends. Ti quote Danny, when you were walking across the cliff face it made me tighten up all over. Great adventure guys.

Who in the world would pick you two hitchhikers up. Two Mediocres asking some Canuck for a ride. sketchy.

Great to have you guys up here again! Yep, we have had some crazy wind lately. ski conditions in the alpine have been exactly what you expirenced for the last month. glad you got that view despite the lack of snow. Its an epic area for sure! Looking forward to seeing how your Wapta trip went! That was my first backcountry expirence and I got hooked.

Reminds me of a couple of times I did Hector back about 35 or more years ago--- before many ppl doing it nowadays were even born. Lol One trip was half decent snow, the other was just survival skiing on longer, narrower skis. Nobody ever used to worry about crevasses then, not until a guy went in one and died about 20 yrs ago.

Thanks for the memories. I climbed Hector on skis three times back in the '80's on skinny telemark skis. Once in July and we had better conditions every time. I have skied conditions like the wind blasted snow you had many times. Just part of the adventure of being in the great white north.

Really like watching your videos. The thing is though, that when you guys are on top of a peak and look down, my heart rate goes up, my palms get sweaty and I think how in the hell can you do that. I think. I'm glad that's not me. I'm also glad you take us along on your adventures.

Love it as always! But seriously, if youre going to rope up because youre on a glacier/ice field and maybe worried about crevasses, you wouldnt be able to arrest a fall without an axe. So no sense in roping up without bringing an axe. Whippet isnt going to help.

I love how you commented to chill out and dont lose sleep over it. I told myself that tonight about a canyon Im doing this weekend. LoL when I scanned the title before watching made me think you was meeting Hector for an adventure

You seriously missed the good stuff by a day. We had excellent snow conditions on the Saturday/ Sunday/ Monday. Thanks for visiting us in Canada- we love having outdoor enthusiasts visit our playground!

30+ hour of driving in a huge van with 2 people. the carbon footprint of you guys is around 1. 2 TON. I hope you guys are thinking about how to reduce your own impact on the environment.

We did this in April sometime in the 80's. There's some big holes in the glacier and we had to wait about 3 hours for the snow to calm down and quit sliding. We did it but it wasn't fun.
reply

Hahah hey what when did you guys climb this? I was up there on Feb 12 with pretty much the exact same conditions, blue bird day, views for miles and terrible skiing!
reply

The Hector? Nope, it's never been called that. It's called Mount Hector by Canadians and unlikely to change just because a couple of Americans made one ascent.

Pretty wind hammered. Well done. Checked out your swag. It's tough to see how big your little sticker is? If small enough, it would look great on my helmet.

Hey guys, if Danny's uploading daily, take a look at St. Nicholas peak, mates in Canmore were ski-mo-ing over there last weekend and conditions were good!
reply

Good skiing on Hector is pretty rare and the views are even better from the true summit. Good to see you guys in the back yard again. Love the videos.
