Perspective: a maid was paid 10$ a month to take care of a baby and other duties. In Kenya, in 1995.
At that time, the safari drivers I used were the only overweight people I saw in Kenya. The drivers were massively overweight, and treated like Kings by the locals. The safari drivers were the 1%ers in Kenya.
I tried to give the maid a 10$ tip for the 3 weeks I'd stayed. And my hosts nearly had a coronary! They explained that a tip like that would destabilize their relationship with the maid. They would handle tipping the maid. Not wanting to upset my hosts, I left it up to them.
I had thought the maid was quite young. She was 40. She had 3 kids of her own. She paid for her own maid, fed, and clothed her family out of the wages she earned. Let that sink in. She basically supported 2 families on that 10$ a month.
Inflation and prosperity have both worked on the region in the past 25 years. I can't speak to the 20$ minimum, 10$ per person per day tip for safari in 2019. It does sound on the high end though.

Again, nailed it. We Brits dont tip because its not necessary where we live, mostly. Everywhere else we need to. Its an income stream we are just not used to. When in the US its a real shock, tips are required. Really, the wealthiest country on the plant does not pay staff! Other places, no issue. Tip and thank the staff. They earn it. Thanks for the upside.

Do you have any tips where to by? I'm more interested in buying craft local make than go to the store and buy stuff made on the production line. I would appreciate any help

At the end of our safari at the Serengeti I gave our driver a $100 tip. But I made the mistake of giving it in a
One Hundred Dollar Bill USD. At the time I didnt realize it, but I found out later that it would be very hard for him to successfully break the bill. I wish I would've known that earlier, and tipped him in small bills.

Because I was living in Arusha when I went on safari so I tipped in local currency, the Tschilling. On safari I tipped the driver 20, 000 per person per day. At the time, it was about $20. And I always paid in brand new notes.

I sincerely appreciate your advice, but I must say that tipping is a horrid practice. One should receive a livable wage for the services one offers. If you're relying on tips to make ends meet the economic model is wrong.

Did you guys get visas on arrival, or beforehand? Im planning on doing Kilimanjaro next October (2020, and was curious what you thought of either process.

I never understand giving tips. If I paid for a trip and my guide get money from tourist office, why should I give the tip to him/her?

I also got told it was a good idea to leave a small tip in your room each day as well. Just so the cleaners don't get missed. :)
