Petrified Forest National Park is a beautiful area in about an hour and a half east of Flagstaff in Arizona. The park features tons of petrified wood, beautiful petroglyphs, and an awesome historic adobe hotel. You can spend a lot of time exploring this park, but if you only have one day, here is how I recommend you make the most of it. Read about all of these spots and more at

I enjoy that your suggestions for what to do in Petrified Forest is everything XD Petrified Forest is an amazing park and I need to go back after having spent one day there in 2019. I'll add a suggestion to your itinerary though: outside the park there is a turnoff at the first bend on westbound US-180 which leads you down a gravel road. At the end of that road (something like 3 miles or so) there is DoBell Mineral and Excavations, where a family has been selling petrified wood at wholesale off their land for three generations. We spent hours with the owner, Noah, being toured around, identifying fossils for him (I'm a science teacher) and I picked up hundreds of dollars worth of petrified wood for $40. The only limit was my suitcase.

Back in 2008 I was moving from Loveland CO to Visalia CA, I ended up staying the night in Gallup NM on the way (after experiencing a sunset in Albuquerque. Got up EARLY in the morning and hit Petrified Forest at about 6: 30am. I was the only person in the park and got to stroll around while listening to Pat Benatar's song Painted Desert on my ipod. It was a really cool experience!

We were there a few months ago. We were blown away by the sites, such a beautiful park, all the hikes were scenic and easy/moderate.
