Random Question but as we celebrate Amtraks 50th anniversary this year and given the current political climate (an administration in DC thats WILLING to invest in high speed rail and other infrastructure projects) do you think Amtrak should spend money on giving the Acela and Regional its own right of way like they do in Japan and Europe for their Bullet Trains or, should America look to other forms of technology like this project they got in Baltimore to build Japanese style Maglev Trains to the DMV region with expansion plans to NYC. Maybe theres room for both in the Northeast Corridor.
Then you can redo that Acela vs Airline Shuttle challenge and the Acela would surely bear the Shuttle in a rematch.
By the way, I got to see the new Moniyhan Hall at Penn Station earlier this year. Its no Grand Central but its amazing. Hopefully we will one day have a completely resurrected Penn Station complex where someone could once again enter New York like Gods instead of us currently scurrying in like rats.

FYI, I take the NYC to DC Acela route one or two times per month so I'm very familiar with the on board service and both lounges. The Metropolitan Lounge at Moynihan Station is beautiful and spacious. The Club Acela lounge in DC is indeed quite dreary, but they are about to temporarily shut it down starting on January 20th for a renovation and addition of better food options. Halleluiah for that! The food and drink on first class is decent, but what really makes the first class experience great are the people. Super friendly and efficient. One last note regarding tipping, and that is this is the first time I've ever heard any mention of tipping on a train. I've taken first class on Acela MANY times and I've yet to see anyone leaving a tip. To me this seems like leaving a tip if you're flying first class with an airline. Is this really a thing now? Would like to be informed if so.

What is considered to be the fastest train in the north east travels at speeds below 200 mph which is slow and not considered as a bullet. But the United States government and amtrak can Unite to not only fix this but totally improve the acela. America, quite playing! You could build a high-speed bullet train set from Boston Massachusetts to Miami Florida stopping in 1 city in each state it passes through. This new Acela line would service the entire United States Atlantic eastern seaboard and at speeds of between 225 to 255 mph and do so with the greatest of comfort. There's no reason why the mighty United States of America can't take on this great mega project unless it wants to put those billions of dollars into launching another rocket into space. Do this and improve infrastructure greatly. Bullet trains and maglev super Train technology, The new American dream.

I had a good look thanks. In order for Acela to run faster than it is now, the Northeast Main Line needs to be speeded up, but the answer is to build a dedicated high-speed train line between Washington DC-New York-Providence.
If you have to make it underground inevitably along the existing route along the beach, you have to boldly make it an underground route.
In addition, the routes are extended to Ottawa-Scranton-Maryland-Washington D. C, Providence-Portland-Bangor-Holton, and Washington D. C-Richmond-Goldsboro-Wilton. .
Washington D. C-Charlotte-Atlanta-New Orleans-Galveston-Corpus Christi-Mexico City-Acapulco I hope that the high-speed rail will be built to make Washington D. C-Mexico City faster and closer.
For the success of the high-speed rail construction in the USA!

why didn't you show all the feces and crime in penn station? all the homeless people urinating over themselves, the food in the foodcourts, and people getting off of the trains? where are the RATS and pigeons that poop on everything and everyone? why didn't you show any of that? why didn't you show any of the people being sTABBED left and right as they come off of the trains? any of the women getting sucker punched by thugs (blacks? why? because you're a liberal loser, that's why.

IDK who started the myth that you can't leave the first class car. You absolutely can. An attendant may stop you - only because you need to leave through their galley. As long as you're not in the way of their galley work they'll hit the button and open the door for you. I usually meet up with other friends on the train who travel in biz class in the cafe car. (But if you bring a drink from first it helps them out if you bring your glass back with you to first class)

Ive never been one to obsess over speed I just love taking the train. everyone is obsessed with speed because of all of these other countries and what they have. I get or some business people it makes sense but i think more attention needs to be put on access to trains in ore states and in my state i see the need for more train routes and not high speed rails. I think a high speed rail can be useful in certain areas and i like that Amtrak is getting better.

The question I have is what percentage of the tracks is actually capable for high speed operation? Seems like not a lot. Being someone who works in transportation I wish North America would build dedicated infrastructure for proper high speed trains like in Europe and Japan and probably even China. Given how wide Canada and USA are high speed trains would really give customers the option to pick trains over planes should they need to or choose to.

Theres only a marginal difference in travel time between Acela and the Northeast Regional. Acela, however, has assigned seats that are spacious. On the Northeast Regional, seats are first come, first served (except in business class. Whenever the track is posted at Penn Station, theres a stampede. Also, the seats are cramped. In fact, the Northeast Regional is less comfortable than Greyhound.

At 6: 55, I'm looking forward to seeing the new Acela train. It will have a destination sign above the aisle so we all know that the train is about to stop at the next station. Like you said, it will increase capacity by adding 3 extra coaches making the total of 9 between the engines on each end. The Acela is a lot faster than other routes including the Midwest routes.

Im on the 148 ne regional as Im writing this. Omg, I love taking the train from dc to nyc. It is so easy. My seat is huge and we have a food and table car. The Acela seems even nicer. However, given the difference in time is thirty minutes and you were delayed by that much Id save the $100 each way. Great video very well produced. Thanks. I love taking the train!

Ever thought to do other modes of transport like ferries or fast ferries? Would be cool to learn about some around the country! I know the Victoria Clipper in Seattle to Victoria, BC is awesome and you can even tag on a floatplane flight via Kenmore Air on their Otter to get a cool return trip experience. Im sure other areas have cool trips like this too.

Had the opportunity to upgrade to first class and I honestly do not see the value. The amount of money you pay for a first class ticket does not come close to the compd meal and drink. Also do not see the point in having a dedicated meal attendant who you should tip. For me personally, I like getting out of my seat and taking a walk to the bev cart.

I just rode my first plane from FL to TX and ugh I REALLY would like for US trains to literally catch up to the rest of the world. Even if it took a few hours longer trains just feel way more at ease and accommodating than the chaos and penny pinching of domestic airlines (I don't blame staff tho. Thanks for these reviews.

7: 18 I don't know. I just hope that that newer Acela gets better than this one. Sorry, but I only have complaints on this one because it just wasn't as great, there were no showers, nor was the universal plug easy to access. It's just a problem, hope the newer Acela is better than this one.

With the new trainsets, speeds between DC and NYC will increase to 160 mph in certain sections. 28 new trainsets will replace the original 20, and each of the new trainsets will seat 380 vs 304 on the original trains. Definitely worth a ride and review when they enter service in 2022.

Super cool train! Im moving to Providence and hope to ride this train. Ive never rode a high speed train in Europe or Asia, and while I know this isnt as fast, itll still be a really cool experience, and be much faster than the commuter trains in Denver: )

On your train reviews, this is the first one you mentioned no security. Is that true at all the train stations youve sampled? Id, can we plan to just show up 20mins prior to departure? Or do we need to be there an hour or more early for security checkpoints?

Finally rode the Acela -- and now watching this - I thought the stretch from where I got on (Boston/Rte 128) to Rhode Island WAS the fastest stretch of the ride. I was disappointed it wasn't THAT fast most of the way.

1: 08 I don't know to be honest if you should book an expensive ticket or rich ticket. If you are overly rich, and you just are running out of things to spend on, then book an expensive first class ticket.

Pretty cool but only a 30 minute difference doesn't sound that much faster. Especially if you have a 20 minute delay like you did. You only saved 10 minutes on this trip. Cool train though.

Im been on that train a few times. I enjoy it. I will try to book a First Class seat on an upcoming trip. I raced a delay on that train due to track issues north of Manhattan.

3: 51 You said the seats offer a comfortable recline. How much of a recline? 45 degrees? Less?
Do you know if the seats in the roomettes fold completely flat into a bed?

I'm hyped for the new trains. if the rails themselves are upgraded, they can allow speeds of around 200 miles per hour, which are proper high speed rail numbers.
