Very much enjoying seeing this and your other train videos. Seeing these has re-sparked my love for train travel. In my 70s now, I cannot go sightseeing as easily as I once could for hiking, camping, attractions, etc. Trains offer a great option to ride and see views sitting down or even while laying down. All while extending the day's and night's adventures. Well now, you got me thinking a train VACAY is a great option!

I took this from San Jose to Los Angeles a few months ago. Pretty nice scenery and was cheaper than flying even in a roommette if you're not in a hurry.
Los Angeles lounge sucks but at least you can get away from the tweakers that are always talking to themselves in front of the Subway.
P. S. I'm not a fan of the communal dining.
P. S. S. The conductor also liked saying San Luis Obispo.

Yes this couple leaves out how expensive this is. It is like over a thousand dollars at least more expensive than flying to Europe and because of this it ain't worth it. $1800 to be exact. Now think about it. No this is my advice for anyone who wants to make this journey. It would be better to rent a car and stop at roadside diners along the way. Instead of forking out like $ 2000. 00

Thanks for this video! Just took this train from LA to Portland last week and loved it. Took it because of your video.
Thankfully we were not on the one that crashed into the truck two days later. Very sorry for the people involved in that, but also glad the cars stayed upright. Could have been way worse.

I took the Coastal Starlight several years ago from Seattle to San Luis Obispo, and the views were spectacular! I also enjoyed meeting people in the dining car. My only regret, which ended up being a big deal was not booking a sleeping car. By the end of the trip, I was tired, grumpy, and achy.

The bedroom is the way to go! Economy seats are hit and miss. Sometimes there are lots of transient types moving from SoCal to the NW. I think you'd need an electric scooter or something for those short stops along the way. Many stops don't have lots to offer near the stations.

The funny thing is when I get off the train with my children - I forgot my luggage - my friend have to chase the train for last stop to get my luggage.
First time for me to travel with the train. from L. A to Seattle.
I like to travel with the train - soon.
I hope.

Suggest doing this trip in spring. Wildflowers galore. I did it one time during 4th of July. Perfect view of fireworks over water near Oakland. Took my bike with me to ride the San Juan's. Then back once again to LA. 10 days later. Great trip for solo traveler.

You Jeb, mentioned your sleep wasn't great on this train: I noticed your 'cabin' was at the end of the car, over the wheels! Thus, more motion, like an earthquake perhaps, keeping you from a solid sleeping experience. Tip: the center of the car is the smoothest.

The rail zone is being able to let go and know your just along for the ride unlike being in a car you where even if your a passenger you cant fully let go because you still have to worry about getting to your destination, less to worry about being on a train!

I couldn't pay to stay in those rooms. I don't see the value. Plus, it would gross me out. Can't imagine what it looks like under a blue light. I definitely would have to bring a stash of disinfecting wipes, lysol, and hand sanitizer to ride those trains.

I have been on that train from LA to Salem, Oregon, on the return trip we were stopped in Kalamath Falls because someone jumped in front of the train, and we are stopped there while they did their investigation, got back to LA 3 hours behind schedule

The views are great. The subsidized accommodations are not. Interesting how the U. S. dubs itself first world yet offers sub par travel accommodations that dont compare to luxury travel in third world countries.

I did this train north to south twice several years ago. Back then the Coast Starlight was Amtrak's premier train. They offer a complementary wine and cheese every afternoon for first class cleeper passengers.

Lived in Oregon for 39 years, from Cali to K Falls is the Siskiyou range, the Cascades are further north. I rode Amtrak from Salem to Seattlemultiple times a year from 93 to 2011. And, loved every trip.

Can anyone tell me if there's a way to reserve a sleeper car on the west side to make sure to have a view of the ocean? I'd hate to pay all that money and not have the whole reason for the trip.

This video is so good, with the sound off. This guy has to be the cringiest host Ive ever seen. Trying way too hard, overacting, terrible jokes. Over the top facial expressions and inflections.

I love amtak but there are sooooo many areas that need improvement. Mainly the tracks which is why i cant do a sleeper route. Its sad they cant have their own tracks that are actually smooth.

Greats vids Jeb. An Aussie here planning a US trip in Aug/Sep during not only during the Coast Starlight but also Empire Builder and California Zephyr. Suggests for tipping your attendant?

I took a few train trips in Europe from major cities and also found that after leaving the center of the city the views were pretty utilitarian and not interesting for a little while.

I still remember my free rides from San Diego to San Juan Capistrano some 30 something years ago, or from Capistrano to Santa Ana, we used to jump on trains, what memories

Union Station in la is gorgeous gone thru as a child to visit my family in Chicago. Went thru as a adult couple of times going towards Chicago from visiting Disneyland

Hello, can you tell me how you booked this? When I look at the timetables on Amtrak it looks like you have to take a bus for a good 4 hours in Northern california.
reply

Wonderful trip! Can I do this trip alone with a old cat with a bedroom for two if necessary in order to accommodate having litter and space for cat Ms. Twig?

I took this going back yo Chicago but i transferred from klamath falls to yake a shuttle bus to catch empire builder instead of going to Seattle
reply

The most epic part of the West Coast Amtrack is north of Seattle to Bellingham.
Its a shame no one told you to go all the way to Bellingham.

reply

And one more thing. Albany, Oregon has an Amtrak station and it's further west. I'm guessing that there's some technicality there or something
