Paris-Marseilles is 3 hours in a TGV from city centre to city centre.
In a jet its about 1 hour, gate to gate. Plus 45 minutes to get from the city centre to the airport, each way, plus get there 1 hour in advance, and hope to get through security on time. so looking 3. 5 to 4 hours in an aircraft - and if you are going to Orly, the Orlyval automatic shuttle is bloody expensive for a 7 minute ride.
Noting that Air France are always more that the standard rail fare. So for major city to city in France, and even some international trips, the train is faster or as fast, and in the case of going Paris to Munich, 90 minutes slower than a plane, but without having to strip and be probed at an airport and without having to take multiple trains and metros.

Omg lyon is a nightmare when your plane goes tech there it's like pulling your nails out. they are slow for one and then when they do sort it traffic control give you the worst slots ever. I've been stuck in lyon going back to the UK after my plane I was working on went tech. Sorted the issue. 2 hour slot needless to say the pax won't happy and got abuse throughout that whole trip back. One flight to forget or gerenally lyon as an airport. Its just a shit show there

What you should add to mention is that airports usually are located far outside the city (for obvious reasons. So you have to add travel time to and from the airport. It's also not cheap to use trains that go to the airports and with a bus you risk getting stuck in traffic which could cause you to miss your flight (that happened to me once, I'll never use London Stansted anymore for that reason. When you go by train you can get off right in the city centre.

Connecting on to an international flight and there's a direct option to the Airport without too much waiting time? TGV. Otherwise you might as well fly because anything that has you get out and navigate Paris with your luggage or stuck waiting too long at CDG/Orly probably isn't worth the inconvenience for the comfy train.

That's not duct tape. That is aluminum tape used in all sorts of applications. Sometimes it's referred to as speed tape. Usually used as a temporary fix for some minor defect or very small crack. Not a big enough problem to warrant cancelling a flight but it's designed to keep it from progressing until maintenance can make a proper patch.

Well it could be worse: if you were to take the train you would probably have ended up being stuck because of strikes!
Edit: However the price for your flight is just horrendous, no one should be paying that much to fly between the two biggest cities in France, especially when there is only 250 miles between them.

There's been construction in ORLY for more than 6 months now. That's why you got a slot and got delayed. Usually you dont. PLUS, the train national company SNCF is also very well know to have HUGE delays. so to be honest If you took the train, nothing would have guaranteed you to be on time. cheers from FRANCE.

What happened to Air Inter? After she retired from Air France a little later my late wife flew with Air Inter mostly on the Caravelle. I'm mildly surprised you were unhappy about the delay, but we used to find safety came first - after all we reached any accident before you do.

Fast trains are definitely better than aircraft for short distances and few stops in Europe. Out here in the West trains make no sense at all, given the distances involved and the fact that cars travel nearly as fast as our relatively slow trains.

. the train may have a lower starting price, but so does the flight if you book early. Especially if you calculate the one-way price as half the roundtrip price. And the train can be delayed too. technical problems are not exclusive to aircraft: )

To be fair, in a country with a high speed rail network, especially one as developed as France, trains are always going to be faster. The plane is only really worthwhile once the travel time for the train starts to go above four-ish hours.

I will be honest here, the only routes worth taking a plane over in france are cross country like Paris-Nice or Paris-Toulouse. Even Paris-Marseille is better off by train if we factor in airport transport and security checks

Took an EasyJet flight from Paris to Toulouse and was arrived 1 hour and a half later while a classic TGV ride takes almost 5 hours to achieve this, I guess it's just bad luck sometimes but I much prefer to use a plane

so, now, to Paris from Lyon. the TGV is more cheaper. but flight is better for aviation lovers. lol, a technical problem can arrive before take off in all company! even in the US or England. lol

It's more like train is twice faster than domestic flight, thats what happend when you have one big public company thats run everything with fast train; ) the USA really should learn from that.

Yesyes, with high speed train (aka TGV, you can travel at 320 km/h. And this is from the core of a town to the core of another town. So the plane is not slow, but the train is fast: )

For such a distance (450 km between Paris and Lyon) the high speed train is obvioully faster than plane, as you don't have the airport commuting time and long boarding procedure.
