HATTIESBURG: What We Saw In This Deep South MISSISSIPPI Town I graduated high school in Purvis Mississippi in 1966. There was nothing to do in Purvis back then so we went to Hattiesburg to do our courting, lol. Two drive in theaters then two drive in burger joints, cant remember the names but we would just circle around both, park & talk. Purvis is only about 8 miles south of Hattiesburg. My dad lived & died in Purvis after marrying my step mother after my mother died. Thats how I was imported from Texas to finish high school. I loved Purvis High though & still have good friends there & we still have reunions yearly. Purvis has grown though. It was wiped out by a terrible tornado in 1902 I believe & the high school mascot is the Purvis Tornadoes of which I was a proud cheerleader. I love Purvis & Hattiesburg, beautiful country.

I think he said it was October 9, which was Columbus Day, a federal holiday, hence the lack of activity downtown since all tbe city buildings and post office were closed. I went to college at USM in the late 70s and early 80s and it had definitely grown in population and size by the time my daughter attended USM from 2017-2021. She had a great experience there but yes, sadly crime is higher than it used to be, but still a nice town. I live on the MS gulf coast but still visit periodically to shop at The Lucky Rabbit, a wonderful vintage market full of treasures!

I went to college in Hattiesburg. University of Southern Mississippi Class of 2016 I’m a Louisiana girl to my soul but Mississippi holds a special place in my heart We had a lot of good times in Hattiesburg. A lot of loving people in that town. Also, it’s one of the safest places I’ve lived. I think the crime just seems skewed on paper. We would be out at night (all girls) until 3 or 4 in the morning and no one ever bothered us.

You always do a great historical review on cities/towns but vary well done in Hattiesburg we just return from a week end there my granddaughter had a Fake Wedding. it was vary pretty her wedding gown was Black at the end of the ceremony the preacher announced you are not Married and you cannot kiss your Bride. Lots food music etc. this was to allow her Dad to walk her down the isle he’s not have long to live due to cancer

I lived in Hattiesburg for a few years. It’s a surprisingly nice place to live. It really revolves around the college which gives the town a nice vibe.
I came back a couple of years ago and round-tripped the trail in a day. It’s a beautiful ride. The trail is well-maintained and VERY rural.
One aside if Captain Hardy had named the town for himself, the Laurel/Hattiesburg area would have been Laurel and Hardy.

The college students don't cause any of the crime in Hattiesburg. It is the few lazy ones that cause trouble, but only a bit.
Healthcare is excellent there, streets are very safe, no corruption (government or law enforcement, just honest people wanting a good life.
I lived there for a few years and liked it. I'm glad you stopped by. Your evaluations are always sincere and unbiased.

All our streets doesn't look like that just in the lower minority area were it doesn't get the proper attention. At one point that area were only for whites even the Hattiesburg high school. Hattiesburg have some expensive and nice properties also. Overall we are doing a good job upgrading water system sidewalks roads and next homes. Clean up abandon properties and hold people more accountable.

Hattiesburg is split between Forrest and Lamar County. You ignored half the city. I lived in Canebrake, and didn't go downtown unless it was to take the 49 bypass to Petal, to eat at El Mariachi. The Turtle Creek Mall area at 98W and Oak Grove are also upscale. Before building his place in Oloe, Favre was a neighbor at Canebrake.
Also, you missed SOUTHERN FRIED RABBIT in Columbia!

I want to thank you for a wonderful presentation of my family's hometown. I'm in my 60s, and my mother's great great grand elders migrated to Hattiesburg from South Carolina. I went there one time as a child in the 70s, and I hope to visit again. Yes! the tree line streets and woods are a wonderful site, and that's one thing I remember about it. Thank you very much

Many of your videos, that show these rotting neighborhoods truly show how CORRUPT and dysfunctional our so called government is. We give billions and billions of our tax money to other countries, while we met our OWN people live in filth a decay. Most of the money then gets funneled back to our criminal politicians. It’s pathetic. Vote them OUT.

I live in the Hattiesburg area. Hattiesburg is getting so much better. It was ranked as the 16th fastest growing city and is consistently ranked as one of the best cities in MS and one of the country’s top college towns. You should have checked out Midtown, it’s a new, modern, walkable and bustling part of town. Lovely work being done here.

Interesting. Though of Chicago I do know that town. My mom from one of those towns, Bassfield, along the trace and long ago my late brother went to and graduated from USM. But you both seem like mighty kind people. Big health and lots of laughs to you both. I do know Prentiss to so of course gonna hunt that down.

Some interesting trivia, just to the east in Petal, that is the only location east of the Mississippi River where nuclear bomb testing has been done where two nuclear bombs were detonated in a salt dome. I've been to the site and there really isn't much to see, so you didn't miss anything.

When he made the left turn from N. Main to W. 4th after leaving downtown he was talking about poverty and passed empty lots on the right. Thats where the Billionaire to be Jimmy Buffet, who recently passed away, resided while attending Southern Miss about 1970.

One of the major appeals for retirees is healthcare with two major hospitals. One, Forrest General has over 800 beds. Hattiesburg Clinic has over 200 physicians and many other providers. Another appealing factor is recreation. It's a nice little town.

If you ever get back to the southern illinois region Williamson County Has very deep history relating back to prohibition. There's a town called Carterville that has Very deep roots. And a lot of very small, tiny town surrounding it.

Nathan Bedford Forrest had a statue in Memphis that was perhaps the most befitting traitor monument out of all them. It's weird how I remember that even though history was erased 6 years ago when that fine statue came down.

Hi I used to live in Hattiesburg in a town called Palmer Crossing, and my mom used to work at camp Shelby during the summer when she wasn’t working at the school name, forest elementary I still have relatives living there

If you had gone on the other side of 59 you would have seen quite a more upscale city. But that's okay, don't encourage people to come here as it is a perfect retirement town and conservative. We don't need any woke folks.
reply

Yes, please keep filming abandoned houses and talking about how backward we are in Mississippi. It helps to keep people who can never understand its beauty or appreciate the culture from ever moving here.

Have relatives that live in Hattiesburg(by marriage, visited many times and have been in that Post office, its really neat place, the down town is really clean and those great old buildings are beautiful.
reply

I wouldn't be showing confederate monuments, there's a bunch of radicals going around demanding they be taken down because they're supposed to imply an endorsement of slavery or some such hogwash.

Spent some time in Hattiesburg due to being sent to nearby Camp Shelby thanks to the Army. Some good places there to eat. When you go to places like Hattiesburg, definitely avoid the chains.

Be willing to bet that the large towns with high crime rates are governed by democrats and the small towns with very low crime rates are governed by republicans. Any comments

I was born in Forrest General Hospital, before my parents moved to the Coast. I ended up buying a house in Pascagoula after college because I missed the salty air so much

I am Australian, after you travel the 50 states come and do the same thing in Australia. Try to find an abandoned house! There are plenty of cats here as well.

Mississippi has a terrible water problem due to years of neglect. Will the state fix the water problem or is it in the process of fixing the state's water system

I wonder if the reason for the low marital rates in the poorest areas is due to people receiving more food stamp benefits if you’re single
