Useful Backpacking Gift Ideas for Less Than 50 John: It probably would also be a good idea to tell anyone buying you something, to do it at an outfitter. It may cost more money, but chances are they'd get the proper stuff. I'd hate to see someone spend their money on me, and have to tell them what they bought wasn't very good or was not useful or was too heavy. An outfitter will be able to help them pick out lightweight gifts. Like I said, I'd hate to see someone buy a flashlight for me or a lamp or anything that they thought would be great, but because they bought it at Target or Walmart, it weighs 5 pounds. Remember, some people think that heavy and solid means quality.

All great gift ideas Dixie. Would like to give a plug for Sporkables. I've used them on a small section hike. Great variety, good quality, and fairly affordable. Another great idea that I like are REI gift certificates. I'll take as many as those as i can get. Set me loose in the store! Oh I do plan on downloading your e book. Will treat myself for Christmas with that one.

for backpacking meals, I'm going to throw out there PackIt Gourmet! GREAT meals for the trail. I'd also suggest an alternative to the bandanna would be a shemagh. they're usually fairly light, but also larger than a bandanna and can be used for extra warmth in a pinch. Love the rest of your suggestions. Very useful and helpful!

Try out the dollar solar lights from dollar tree that are used to line a driveway path. I found they charge up in a short amount of time and last pretty much all night long. You didn't say how much your book was and do you have a PO Box where I can send you the universal gift.

Thanks for all the great hiking Christmas gift ideas! I see that you are planning to hike the PCT next year. I really enjoy following your journeys, and was wondering if you knew what month you planned to start so that i can be sure to follow you on this new adventure?

Lithium batteries - AA or AAA for their headlamp and possibly for their UV water treatment. More spendy than alkaline, but they last longer, are much lighter and work to much lower temperatures.

I always carry a cloth diaper.
It is like a bandana on steroids.
Or a flour sack towel. I got a couple from a farm supply store.
Cloth diapers are getting hard to find.

Great ideas Dixie! I found Packit Gourmet this year and love their meals. I don't believe they sell in stores so I purchased direct from them online. Also love my solar Luci light!

Great gift ideas and Soo true. I have a backup charger, but i'm going to try a new 15000mAh solar charger i got for around 17. So far it's great.

Another suggestion: Pocket Knife and/or a sharpening kit. (small one)
I would also recommend a good survival style knife (full tang with a sheath.
