Do You Need a Gun on the Appalachian Trail? Vick: Thanks, Dixie, that was a well considered talk. Like you, I am a gun owner, hunter, hand loader, etc, with law enforcement experience. However, the biggest lesson I have learned is that my best weapon is between my ears. In two AT thruhikes I have been close to several bears. In the Shenandoah I stumbled upon a momma bear with two cubs. She swatted the cubs up nearby saplings while I froze, considering my limited options. Then she sat down with her back to me and looked over her shoulder meaningfully. I remained frozen. After a moment she looked back at me again, and I got the message. I walked past her and on up the trail, never looking back. It was the clearest, most direct communication between species that I could imagine.

Guns. the question should be do you need GUNS (plural. I recommend a 45 70 handgun and a 45 70 lever action carbine along with a Weatherby 30-378 Magnum Mark V bolt action rifle with a 30X scope and an ankle holster with a 38 special and a Heckler & Koch 45 ACP in a shoulder holster. And of course you should have an AR15 variant with a bump stock.
You never know when a grizzly and a herd of zombies are gonna be following a rhino attack triggered by Russian Spetznatz operatives.
You're gonna want several hundred rounds of ammo for every weapon. If that means you need to go without food and water or a tent or a sleep system, so be it.

As someone who was raised around weapons, with extensive military experience, worked in war zones, carried assault weapons, handguns whatever. My thoughts are that if you live in a 1st world country then statistically you don't need to carry a handgun. But I get it, guns make you feel cool, however if you carry concealed then you're definitely up to no good, and if you're around me and I find out then I'll remove myself from your company

I carry for the trail, 10mm concealed, which is the smallest caliber I'm comfortable with for killing a charging bear. The only time you have to worry about the permit is if someone knows you have it, and the only way that happens is if you end up needing to use it on someone trying to attack you. (Bears won't report you, and neither will dead assailants) So you just say it was open carry at that point.

Fast Forward to summer 2020. You're most likely far safer on a trail than in major cities; Portland, Minneapolis, Chicago, Philly. not to pick on anyone's city, it's just fact. I trust bears to do what bears do, far more than I trust starangers to do what they ought do. Lots of great folks on the trails.

People feel they need a gun to protect themselves against people during a hike?
What a sad sad situation that is. Unbelievable.
And bears? The most dangerous animal in the world is an injured bear. Good luck killing it with a standard pea shooter people carry.

Now its 2020 and I bet many views on this have changed. Also the size and weight of Compact Handguns has changed.
Being in Remote areas alone dictates protection and Not from four legged creatures. Take it or leave it. Its just my opinion. Thank You

Pro-Tip. For bears, I carry a rape whistle. And I can honesty say no bears have rape me on the trail. Also, get the light weight version. It cost 10 times more, but the savings in your base weight is well worth it.

Might only be something Americans might could consider.
Never heard of a European considering taking a gun on a hiking path.
Any thoughts from any body else in the rest of the World?
