5 Things I Wish I'd Known Before I Hiked The Appalachian Trail Clay: You are awesome, love your number 5 and wanted to thank you btw for a suggestion in another video where you mentioned that cotton kills, I just did my first backpacking trip and all by myself in Wayne national Forest this weekend, it was a 3 day and night, bought some synthetic clothing for the hike, worked great, Soo light weight btw, just wanted to say thankyou for the advice, you are absolutely beautiful btw lol, enjoy your videos, you are doing a great service to beginning backpackers and please keep up the great work, btw if you are looking for a fun hike, check out Wayne national Forest in Ohio, it's beautiful, more rugged than most would give credit for

Boots definitely right. Waterproof boots will inevitable get soaked (as will the rest of you) and they NEVER dry on the trail.
Though be sure to get the right lightweight footwear for YOU. I still need a very firm forefoot sole and that limits my choices of runners. The squishy ones never worked for me.
As for changing you. yeah most say that but I spent my life (63 when I Thru'd) being and working independent so really it just added 6 months of memories for me to smile about when I'm not out adding yet more.

Btw after my first backpacking adventure and lol it was quite the adventure first day out, right out the gate started steep climb nasty weather lol, lucky I'm alive, anyways, I Instantly got the fever, I can't wait to get out on a trail again, I'm 46, got sciatica, carpel tunnel, arthritis, and bone spurs, not on meds, I will not let the pain control my decisions, I choose to live and from now on, nature and the trail are my joy.

Always weirds me out to hear people dismiss stable jobs when their life depends on food grown by people doing that. Same for the people making the gear they're using, staffing the stores they shop in, and upkeeping the park systems they're passing through. Without all those people doing that, the world couldn't support outliers like thru-hikers.

Learned to backpack from The Complete Walker when dinosaurs ruled the earth. Advice there was to set your toilet paper alight and burn as much as possible. Does anyone do this anymore. Seemed to work well when I did it. Just a little care not to fire the forest floor and no need to pack it out (yuch)

I live across the pond in Northern Ireland and there are plenty places to go hiking but nothing like the AT. We have the Ulster Way which takes in far too much in the way of roads, towns etc with nature interspersed. Love the idea of doing a thru hike on the AT or at least a long section hike

Shouldn't #1 be #2?
And Google ten essentials and you will find
Map
Compass
Sunglasses and sunscreen
Extra clothing
Headlamp or flashlight
First-aid supplies
Firestarter
Matches
Knife
Extra food
Note item 3. Skip items on this list at your peril.

Beautiful video. It's so easy to forget we are zipping through space on a ball of granite. and nobody really knows why. but. I highly doubt it is to make thinguhmuhbobs in exchange for paper that you trade for food and shelter. At least I hope not anyway.

I really wish that I had brought bear spray on the PCT! with the amount of mountain lion tracks and scat, I was freaking out and kept looking over my shoulder. would have felt more comfortable starting out with the bear spray!

Also love your views on the normal day to day scheduling program that subtly comes out.
Thanks for all your help and efforts to make this amazing opportunity as good as it can be for a first timer.
