This is the last gear video before I hit the PCT! In this one I'll show you all the new video equipment I'm taking, what I'll be wearing, footwear, how I'm preparing for the extra water, toiletries, emergency items, and what I'm keeping from the Appalachian Trail! So, everything. Thank you all so much for watching, and I can't wait to start posting updates from the trail: )

Not sure where to post this for everyone to see? Gear choice is totally up to you. Just use what makes you happy! I've been doing this stuff for 40+ years. lol Lightweight is good if you like to suffer. Mid weight is where it's at. Have fun hiking and don't listen to these fools about the benefits of going light weight. If you can carry the weight go for it! You will have a much better time in the long run. Good food vs. Ramen noodles and so forth. Take enough clothes to stay warm and dry, don't skimp! Gear depends on what you like. Use what works for you! Trail runners may be lightweight but have no support when you need it in bad terrain. Get some good mid weight boots, you won't regret it! Tents are a choice, myself I prefer tarps and hammocks. If you know what you're doing you'll never need a tent. If you can't hang a hammock at a campsite use a pad to sleep on instead. I use a pad in my hammock anyway. Damn, can't hang a tarp either? Use it as a bivy sack then. Never ever scrimp on your 1st aid kit! Make sure you have all the basics. Just make sure you have all your bases covered. I'm 56 years old and this setup has never failed me: )

I have absolutely never heard of anyone bringing self protection devices on the Pacific Crest Trail. A teensy knife for utility, cutting food like cheese and such, but never self defense. Are you really that worried? I do understand it for hitching maybe, but I have never gotten the impression from any of the PCT thru hikers who I have watched/read that that was really at all dangerous either. Something to be cautious about, sure, but for hiking in general I usually find that the quality of human you find improves substantially the further you are from a trailhead. I just find it weird that a thru hiker would carry excess weight geared so much that towards defending against other humans, who are unlikely to be dangerously aggressive in the backcountry. That being said, I suppose those same items might work against bears too, maybe, but I have never considered them an issue either (so long as one adheres properly to bear awareness techniques of course) Hike your own hike, I guess! :) Loving your videos; keep up the awesome work and happy trails!

If you ever can get your hands on some Bose ear buds they're worth 10x's they're weight in gold. I've had mine for a few years, washed them by accident at least 1/2 dozen times and they're still going strong. The buds have super soft rubber that fits snug in the ear canal, not like Apples that will fall out from sweating. You might even save a 1/2 gram! ;)

Dixie - FYI. If you get a shorter charging cord you wont loose so much power during the charging process. You just need a cord long enough to do the job. When happens is that charging energy leaks out of the charging cord as it is going to your device. The longer the cord the more power is lost. Shorter the better.

The video quality was great! Super clear. Good call on the tripod for the trail. Looking forward to the videos. Will be interested in seeing how you use the umbrella and if the solar panel is worth the weight. I really like the weight breakdown on the spreadsheet. Good luck. Show some AU tiger spirit!

Dixie: as to toilet paper. Check Walmart/ camping section. They usually have that. 3 rolls to a pack w/ dispenser. Each roll is eqivalent to one regular roll, in a plastic container. Low cost, takes up less room in your pack. There is no cardboard roll inside each roll! Believe it is a Coleman brand!

Hey Dixie, make sure that you register your ACR Personal Locator Beacon following the instructions that came with it so that it will be effective. It will be worth its weight in gold if you are injured and need it. I am glad that you are carrying one, I don't go on an adventure without mine.

my boyfriend and i we're just talking about doing the PCT than the AT (we live in the pnw so for us it makes sense) and we cannot wait doing it in about a year or so just so we can save up the money but your videos are so helpful it's insane!

Hey! Why use the platypus gravity filter instead of a smaller UV light thing that kills germs? I've just seen other hikers who use the light thing and it looks way more convenient and lighter.

Awesome! you are using the same Salomon shoes/trail runners and (darn tough) socks that I use for my long hikes! I love love those too: ) Can't wait to see the videos from the trail!
