I've been rocking the HMG 2400 Windrider (Mesh pockets. My base gear is about the same as yours (although my clothing sizes are XL) and while I'm doing just weekend outings in the Whites of NH, I'm not coming close to filling the 40 liters - especially since you have nearly 10 liters in the outer pockets. Even with a week of food, I don't see this pack being too small. I'll be curious when your PCT is over just how much of that upper roll of the pack was used. Only reason I'm asking is that I spent a LONG time debating between the two packs once I had the rest of my gear down and I took an educated chance on the 40L and so far, it's been the right choice. I'm just worried that when it does come time for a longer journey that I've overlooked something. Thanks

For those of you giving Dixie a hard time about upgrading her gear, get over it. A few years ago I upgraded my gear, that was before I ever knew of this miracle fabric and Zpack, over the next few years I will change out my pack and tent. I had a serious ski injury some years ago and carrying less weight is just much more enjoyable and healthy. I remember the days of 40 plus pound packs, it was not great but I was young and healthy. I found out about Zpack from through hikers on the AT. In a few years I am going to give the PCT a shot, I will be on team Zpack all the way and I don't really care how much it cost, it will be worth it. Have a great hike, be safe.

Hi first of all great videos! im really enjoying them. I was just wondering why you choice this pack over other UL packs that are even lighter like the Zpacks backpacks? I'm at the moment looking for a new UL backpack and im stuck choosing between these two companies. At the moment i am leaning more to the hyperlite, but mostly because im from the Netherlands and found a webshop in Europe that sells hyperlite packs as opposed to Zpacks, which i would have to import from the US which would be quit expensive and just a pain. Would love to hear your (or other peeps; ) ) opinion on it.

well when you go with that specific bag in the dessert i wouldnt care it being waterproof though: p the black on the other hand looks to me like a disadvantage in hot conditions as it attracts sunlight and therefore also heat: / and believe me when there's not a lot of breathability on your back and waist that will annoy you more then the one pound extra on the Osprey also the fact that you cant tailor the bag to your body as if you could do with the Osprey. also that price O. o would never buy it

With the lighter bag make sure that you have some kind of plan with the shoulder straps also. Whit my own research for future PCT hike I found out that the amount of water that you have to carry on those dry sections may be too much for those ultralight backpacks and the shoulder straps starts to dig in to your skin. That is one of the main reasons why I have decided to go with my Ospray even though it is heavier.

I have this exact backpack and love it! I would have preferred larger hipbelt pockets, but they will work for some snacks and a headlamp. To carry my phone I ordered a Zpacks shoulder gear pouch, and it is perfect; the black gridstop even matches the rest of the pack. The way this pack transfers weight to the hips is amazing, and I have zero regrets upgrading from my Osprey!

I have been following your journey, and like many of your tips that you have learned along the way. Now you test your new backpack, but do NOT put your gear in it when you show how it feels totally FULL. Did you do a shakedown hike with your new gear? Just cause you have done one long hike doesn't mean you or anyone including myself don't need a shakedown for new gear.

How is this pack holding up? looking at one now. Are you happy with the 3400 or do you wish you went down to the 2400? how are those hip belt pockets now did you get some aftermarket ones? other buyers have talked about buying mountain laurel design hip belt pockets and stickign them over or ordering the pack custom without hip belt pockets.

Tend to agree with others here who said black color is the wrong choice for desert hiking. You are logical to reduce weight to take more water. But analyze why you need more water. it's the heat. This defeats your primary goal and will cause you to burn through more water. Take a white back. Great Winter pack choice. Happy trails.

That is one thing I HATE with new gear. no instructions on how to use all the clips, snaps or ties. My wife gave me a full length leather cowboy jacket. It has snaps all over and it took both of us to figure out how they probably connected. I had the same issue with my last pack. What goes where and why? Thanks for the video.
