Drakesbad Guest Ranch - in Lassen Volcanic National Park. This rustic resort is run by the National Park Service. The waiting list to stay there is two years long, but they let PCT hikers stroll right in and have free use of the facilities and eat for half price. Loaner clothes and a towel to use the showers and lounge about in their hot springs mineral pool. The lunch buffet had fresh salad, cold cuts, sandwiches, chowder, apple pie, cookies, and sodas. Dinner service included lamb, salmon, wild rice, salad, carrot cake, hot chocolate, and for those of a mind, good German beer. One guest dropped off a bottle of champagne, asking us to help him drink it. Once we and the guests had all eaten, the staff brought all the left-overs to the PCT table.

A zero (or five) in Etna, CA are a must. Stay at the Hiker Hut, eat at Bob's Ranch House, grab a shake from Dotty's, and try the Laust Sparrow gin made in-house at Denny Bar Co & Distillery. One of my favorite trail towns; I stayed there for almost a week. :D
I also recommend a side trek up Umpqua River Trail to the hot springs. Some pretty badass waterfalls all along that trail, the springs are legit, and free. They're purported to be closed after dark but the trail from the road isn't an easy one so if you're already there by dusk or hike in the back way (i. e. via Umpqua River Trail, you're gonna be fine camping out there. Although, I'd suggest camping downstream a bit so as to not spoil the fun by attracting attention.

Julian, CA is at mile 77. Its a tourist town with western feel that specializes in apple pie with many pie shoppes. My favorite is the alley pie shop's apple crumble pie. Also many great restaurants. Buffalo burgers are another unique item in town. There is a gold mine you can tour, but I never tried that.

Hey Dixie, great work once more. How about an How Long Lasted vid where you share your experience of how long a liter of water, a full phone battery, your trailrunners, etc. lasted you on your pct thru-hike? Would be useful for folks which are planning their own pct thru-hike or any other trail. Keep going!

Saw your microspikes vs crampons vid. At the the end you were glissading. When I climbed Mt Adams a lady tried glissading while wearinG crampons. She needed a helicopter rescue at 10, 000 ft due to a broken ankle. WARNING- do NOT GLISSADE WHILE WEARING CRAMPONS!

Just bought my first pair of Altras in preparation to hike the Superior Hiking Trail this summer. The doctor says the best thing for the arthritis in my hips and knees is to walk. You have helped inspire me to start moving in the right direction. Forward!

how does a thru hiker summit whitney? As far as im aware one has to have a permit to hike whitney for a specific day, and the permits are awarded months in advance. Is there some special exemption or do you just have to be super precise with planning?

Gear related question: I plan an a mid April 2020 start for the PCT. Is it a bad idea to purchase my big 3 gear items this far in advance, should I hold off until my start date gets closer?
Happy hiking!

Also double filter your water. I just filtered water with my sawyer at Deep Creek and got really sick. Might be worth pulling out those aquatabs after you've filtered as an additional precaution here.
