CDT 2018: Gila National Forest. Dixie and Aaron have their first falls on the CDT as everyone gets lost in the Gila National Forest. Kirk: Wow. this video is riveting drama. and especially since it was being recorded in real time when the outcome was still uncertain! Better than any TV show or movie! It is certainly a great example of how lack of communication among a group in the wilderness can compound the stress on everyone. Someday two-way satellite communication will be so common it may eliminate these situations, but it is a good reminder to me to make sure we all have a plan in groups I will be leading. Thanks for sharing such a real look at this situation. Love your videos.

Although I never thru hiked a long trail like this I do a lot of off trail hiking and getting separated sometimes is an eerie feeling. The longer time passes the more your mind starts to think of worst case scenarios. Everyone did the right thing in this video and it was fun to watch. When hiking with a group make sure everyone knows where to go if separated. If it is the next waypoint ahead or back to a trail head that way if someone doesn't show up to that spot in a reasonable amount of time you know something isn't right.

If you are hiking by yourself then you are not really responsible for other hikers. They may change plans and you don't really know. However, if you go as a group it is worth staying together as a group. Yes it may slow you down but the anxiety you avoid when someone is lost is worth it. I have had the case of losing some scouts for a few hours and the stress was extreme. I make sure to stop at trailheads and group up al least every 1/2 hour. The last person is the sweep and they are the most experienced hiker.

I stopped the video to make this comment, as far as I was concerned you all did the right thing, head to your agreed upon stop point wait a reasonable time then and only then call for help. If everyone starts back tracking or searching off to the side all of a sudden every bodys lost and no one knows what is going on. Kudo's for use your heads for more than hat racks. As this is several months after the fact I know it all worked out. Go team

I'm sorry you had to explain yourself in such detail, but the smile on your face at the end showed just how relieved you were: ) This is the second time I've watched these videos and never get tired of them. You and Aaron have done a great job. You've inspired me to backpack for the first time in my life (62 years) this past March. Five of my family members and I packed the Gila Wilderness for four days. It was an amazing time. Thank you.

Go Aaron - way to work it out on your own. Kicked Dixie and Perk's butt!
Dixie it was so sweet how concerned you were (rightfully so) but the great thing was that the practices you had put in place (evening updates to family) was what you both used to let each other know everything was OK. Those things you think you will never use are always great when you need them.

Too bad they (Park Service, BLM, etc) couldn't mark the trail a little better to help prevent this sort of thing. I read about an older woman who got off the AT a short distance, a few years ago, and got lost in the woods. At least you're not in deep woods. Goes to show, have emergency plans for contingencies. But I know you can only carry so much gear my dear. ha ha

About river crossings, on my second backcountry trip in Yellowstone. My friend and me crossed at a waist deep spot because she was sure that that was the best way. We got through linking arms then we met up with someone who said there was a bridge a mile up. I wanted to kill her!

Funny when people refer to others as not experienced it getting LOST in life or in the wilderness that GIVES YOU EXPERIENCE! Those complaining about her doing the wrong thing need to get out and live a little.

one thing everyone should do before starting long hikes is see a podiatrist. He will inform yu of anything inefficient/dangerous about your way of walking, offer corrective insoles, etc.
