CDT 2018: Ghost Ranch, New Mexico. Dixie encounters a Mountain Lion as she tries to push through Ghost Ranch and inch closer to the Colorado border Bill: cattle kill 20 people per year in the US, about the same as dogs. Every year in the US, over 800, 000 people are dog bitten badly enough to need medical care. Over 4 MILLION more are bitten, but it's a mild injury. You can bet that lots more people are injured than killed by cattle, too, and this is not all at rodeos, either. My maternal grandmother was killed by a cow she was trying to milk and I twice saw cows try to smash my dad between their hip and the side wall in the milking station, while he was hand-milking them. He beat both of them (with the little t-stool he sat on ) so badly that they were down, hanging by their necks in the stanchion. After that, they'd go crazy at just the sight of him, so mom had to milk those two.

I was only about 7 years old the second time, but I knew what was happening was bad. I ran about 100m to get mom. The only time I ever saw her run and the only time I ever heard her swear. STANLEY! Are you trying to KILL her? That's the only milk cow we got. :-) He was STILL beating her when we got back, so it had gone on for like 30 seconds or more. The one that tried to gore him, he got a lasso around her foot, got her down, tied her legs together, and after beating her senseless, cut her horns off with a hacksaw. There's nerves and blood vessels in the base of horns. I've got dad's temper. It doesnt come out more than about once per 10 years, but when it does, you dont want to be in the same county as me.

This beautiful big cat looks very healthy and in prestine condition therefore fully capable to hunt wild prays so no reason for him to attack you and risks being injured therefore unable to hunt.
Cougers are just like house cats, very curious but skittish. They absolutely need to investigate whatever is new on their territory so they will be safe. So, when one stares at you or peeks at you through vegetation doesn't mean they are hunting you.
I see you had treckkng poles. You could have bang them together, then lift them over your head, then repeat while still using that deep voice.

Upon second viewing of the cat, this cat looks pretty young, and inexperienced at hunting. Seems likely there were other cats nearby. Looks like a female, maybe a year or more old. The question is, were you on your period when the cat showed up? I would bet that was the case, and would very much like to know. I've only ever known about cats stalking girls when they were on their period, and it can attract bears also.

The cat was totally watching you when you took out the harmonica, expecting something else, like a gun, and getting ready to make a run for it. They are SO intelligent, even this obviously young mountain lion. A warning shot would have scared this one away if you had a pistol, but I'm sure you would not have treasured the experience of simply out-willing the cat. That must have been spiritual for you.

25 miles, goodness gracious you thru-hikers develop some legs. What impressed me was the 24-hour challenge where you surpassed the distance the best-walking special forces soldier is able to do without a pack. And you do it with a pack and probably in harder conditions and circumstances. BEAST MODE. Tru-hikers are Champion walkers.

I have been stopped by a stranger while hiking because he saw two mountain lions brawling around the bend. I went back the next day for three hours hoping to see one. While they are certainly dangerous and would easily kill me, I know it is quite rare so seeing one at all is quite the achievement.

I realize having a cougar encounter might not always be desired, but in hindsight this was a jewel of an encounters, I'm sure few tru-hikers get to see a wild cougar, or any people for that matter. This is a highlight of all your journeys and you caught it on film.

Stated below, hikers are more likely to be hit by a vehicle than attacked by a cougar: Why do you seem to always walk with traffic rather than against it when walking along the highway?
reply

Hoh! A lion! My heart skipped a beat for you! That was intense! You have got modern day movies and television beat by miles Dixie! Thank God he/she wasn't hungry or aggressive that day!
