CDT 2018. Yellowstone National Park. Dixie fulfills a lifetime goal, but infections in her toes create some complications. Cheerio: I've had the same toe issues when I was a child, and eventually had the procedure Dr. Berry discussed below to correct the issue. My dr's back then chose to wait and see if it came back and was a re-occurring problem before they took out the nail at the bed as it won't come back and I now have oddly narrow toe nails on my big toes. When it would happen, they would lance it, trim my nails so nothing would get stuck under skin at the top - that downward cut I noticed on your toe is what they would do to let it heal. then I would need to use hydrogen peroxide and rubbing alcohol and soak them in Epsom salts to draw stuff out and also the betadine stuff. it would clear up shortly and then maybe come back w/in 9-12 months.
Eventually they just decided I had deep set nails and needed to fix that and had surgery and after surgery this never came back on that toe. I mostly recall the dr cutting holes in my shoes so they wouldn't put pressure on my big toe during healing. My 12 yr old self was horrified going to school with a wedge cut out of my shoe, not to mention what a PIA it was whenever it rained, and in seattle - it rains a LOT.
Since this seems a new issue for you, just keep doing what you are doing if it comes back and maybe add a small ziploc packet of Epsom to pick up mid hike next time cuz it won't happen at the start - and carry small amts of betadine and/or hydrogen peroxide. I had a tiny bottle in my blister first aid kit that was no bigger than my pinky finger. Used it for nasty blisters and in case I got a cut that was more than surface deep. It may have been iodine - I recall thinking it would do double duty as backup water treatment.
mine was caused by skin of toe covering where the nail needed to grow so they were at the top side edge - yours seems on the side mid toe, so likely diff cause. maybe something got in there and irritated it?
Best of luck on next adventure!

Old Faithful is at 8000 feet. I was having trouble breathing, with my heart flipping around and went to Urgent! Care there. They are really, really expensive, but they will take care of you. They diagnosed me with altitude sickness. It was different from Nepal so I didn't recognize it! A Chinese family came in with their little seven year old daughter who had skinned her knee and got it full of gravel. 250 to take care of the little knee, and that didn't include the kiss! There is nothing else unless you go back south to Jackson Hole hospital.

The few times I've had what seemed like an infected toenail, when I noticed the possible issue starting, I just cut the nail back some on the side in question where I thought it was digging in. Drained any puss while cleaning the area with some rubbing alcohol (which I always carry a tiny amount when backpacking) on my bandana every time I took my socks off. Never went to the doctor for it; I'm a guy, I don't do doctors unless I coughing up a lung; -. It always started to look better within 2 days.

DIxie, I have a serious warning for you. When you take an antibiotic, do NOT take Zyrtec. It destroys your ligaments and tendons and has ruined my knees, hands and feet. Since you are especially hard on yours, AVOID it. Doctors do no read the warning on the package which says: Do not prescribe for patients over 50, I have met two young women your age who told me it hurt them also! NO ZYRTEC! Use something else and watch out, they will try to get you to take it.

Sometimes I think roads with less traffic, people just pick you up more often cause they understand how few options you have.
They understand you have to help people and theres less of a bystander effect.
I broke down on the side of the road in town and no one stopped. I broke down in a rural area and more than one person asked if I was okay and offered me a ride into town or at least an area with cellphone reception.

I've been to Yellowstone in 2016 and I will never forget this lifetime experience! Since this adventure, I dream to come back and I really really have the feeling I need to see Yellowstone again! This episode got tears in my eyes. Thanks for giving me a fully new impression of my favorite spot on earth!

Dixie, there is an Urgent Care First Aid office at Old Faithful. I stopped there this summer when my heart started flipping around. No biggie, it was just altitude, but it has kinda thrown a monkey wrench into my plans for Mt Kailash next year. I don't think I had better go. hum.

For such extensive hiking experience as Dixie has, I wonder why she elects NOT to use gators. They make a HUGE difference in foot and sock cleanliness and reduce instances where a nuisance rock or thorn needs immediate attention.

I've had the same swelling and puss issue with my toe a few times before and all I've had to do is keep them drained cleaned and medicated and eventually they would heal up. But I'm sure it's a pain dealing with it on the trail.

I was at Yellowstone on September 2018. There were a lot of bison, even around Old Faithful Lodge. You really had to watch out for them. We stayed at the Yellowstone Lodge cabins. We had elk come right by our cabin.
