Thanks for this! I've been thinking about going on some longer packs with my pup. I love ruff wear and have their Quinzee jacket and boots for my pittie mix. It is essential for winter hikes with such thin fur and a lean body, as are the boots when it is really cold. He can go for miles having all sorts of fun and not be shaking from the cold when we get home. Did you consider getting their sleeping setup for your pup? Also, would be interested in if you ever thought about hammock camping with your dog. But that might be too crazy.

it would be fair to a dog to slowly build up hike lengths over time. So as not to push the dog too hard. There are thorns and sharp rocks that our dogs arent used to and muscles get sore. things like that. THe dog should be enjoying themselves too. Ive read that %10 is the max that a dog should pack on their back. I bring a few different options as ground pads. I dont want my dog to be laying on the cold dirt or uncomfortable.

Def you have to go at the pace of the animal. Applies to dogs, horses, etc.
Croatian HGSS just had to pop a rescue operation for a large dog on the Via Adriatica last week. Amateur hiker owners, it's hot as hell, and they about killed the poor thing. 100 something pound St. Bernard type breed. They had to litter it out.

Dogs in snow make me happy. I had a mountain trip as a teenager with a dog named Sasha. She was the outfitters dog, My dog by the second day. We use mushers secret on our dog today. It's a treat for her. I know it feels better on chapped feet. I admire you for taking Fancy along for a little while.

Try using booties called Muttluks. They have a knit scree collar, which helps keep stuff from getting into the bootie. This brand of dog booties is the best I have found after 25 years of hiking with a dog. I never used socks with them; a dog's fur provides the same type of friction control.

Do you know what brand the dog carrier that you showed is? We recently had an emergency with our 40-pound dog on a local hike, and my husband had to carry her for about a mile on his shoulders. Would love to get something like the harness/carrier you showed.

Did you do anything about Fancy's nails? My tent is Sil-poly, not DCF. I'm worried about my dog's nails puncturing it. She HATES having her nails cut. Even when they are cut kind of short, I can hear them on our hard wood floors.

Dixie. do we have the same dog? Nature does an anxious pup good! Mine is generally afraid of strangers but during our hike she became less and less bothered by folks coming down the trail!
