2024-2025 Cadillac Lyriq Review - Caddy's Big 2-Row EV Brings Back The Memories

Cadillac has returned to their roots in a way with the Lyriq EV. How so The cabin is quiet, the ride is supple, and you can't describe the driving dynamics without the words big and heavy. While some may see that as a problem, the Lyriq fills me with more nostalgia than any Cadillac in recent memory because I appreciate an alternative to the firmly sprung majority.

Went and looked at a Lyriq on Friday. Didn't test drive (didn't have time, but sat in it and poked around. I like the styling and like the AAOS infotainment, and it's plenty roomy inside.
However, a few things I didn't like are the wheel/tire combo and the front seats.
The wheel/tire combo even on the Sport 3, which is what we would get, has too tall of a tire. That much sidewall just looks dated or cheap. And I get it, they probably went that route to add to a softer ride. But on the Sport 3, I'd expect a slightly stiffer ride that might come from a thinner sidewall. Or at least offer a sportier combo as a standalone option.
The front seats, as you noted, are far too shallow. Like the most shallow I've ever been in for a modern car. It's made worse by the limited upward articulation. But yeah, it desperately needs a thigh extension at the very least.
The price though. is VERY good for what you get. We have an order in for a Polestar 4, though have been thinking of changing that to a Polestar 3. Both of those have much better seating, and more of a sport oriented ride, but they also have a higher price tag, and are plagued with delays.

I really like the Ultium platform. But GM does things that make me unhappy. First is this silly thing of removing the Apple CarPlay. For me that is a disaster. I was injured by being run over by a car. And I really can’t drive a vehicle without CarPlay. It allows me to let the computers do a lot of the work of driving. Part of my injury is that I have some brain damage. And that assistance is very important for me. Also I can’t get a Lryiq because of another injury that I have. I can’t get into vehicles that are not tall. I am 6’2 so I am tall. And now I can’t bend over to get in a short vehicle. I tried a lyric at my Cadillac dealer. My head smashes into the roof. The Cadillac that I want is the Escalade IQ. But I have to get past the high price, and of course it doesn’t have CarPlay. I can fix the CarPlay problem I think. I am sure that one of us who are working on getting CarPlay back into these vehicles will find a way to do it. But I think that with my very standard conditions I will have to be patient to find the right answer for me. Because my needs are different from everyone else.

I have a BMW i4 and now in the market for an SUV EV for our second car. Lyriq is definitely on the list, but so is the iX. I have come to really enjoy BMW’s EV implementation. I would also consider the ZDX. The Audi is very nice, but honestly Audi’s dealer network is terrible - makes me feel like I need a shower every time I leave an Audi dealership. The Model X is interesting, but the rear doors are unnecessary novelties that are, as far as I can tell, far more prone to trouble than any other rear doors in any other vehicle sold in North America. Tesla’s are also (again, my one taste bias here) not nearly as luxurious as their price tags would suggest. I love driving an EV but gimmicks don’t really do it for me. Genesis is also a very interesting alternative but, even with very fast charging, it needs a bit more range to make me feel better on my drives from North Carolina to Chicago. Thanks for the review and quasi-comparo.

What I would really like to see is that any BEV that has a 100 kWh or greater battery size has a 80Amp charger in the vehicle. I’m really glad that GM is smart enough to have worked that out however, Tesla Rivian and many other manufacturers are still only putting in 40 to 50 amp on board chargers why I mention this is that many electricity providers only give you a 5 to 6 hour discounted electricity rate, I would be really happy if you would mention this to other EV manufacturers as it would only be I’m sure a very small cost for them, however, it would save consumers considerable money over the lifetime of ownership charging at 80 A versus 40 to 50 at home

I love that the Acura ZDX is so similar to this, but without a lot of the gimmicks, like how the ZDX has regular door handles. Also, I find the emerging trend of offering different tunes/power profiles at an upcharge to be extremely anti-consumer. If there was a mechanical difference, I would understand, but pay extra to unlock more power that your hardware already supports rings very much like BMW's heated seat subscription. Multiple manufacturers have done this now, the first I know of was a Mercedes and GM doing it for Colorado, Tesla putting the same battery but only unlocking the full capacity with an upcharge.

Lyriq is just ugly from behind the rear doors. It also had a surprising amount of hard plastics inside to include some that look nice but are still hard plastic. The lack of frunk in these ultium models is just lazy, or I should say bean counter GM. We actually liked the Blazer styling better and the choice of red interior on the Blazer looked great. Only points in favor of the Lyriq was Carplay but the dealer hinted it would be gone soon. Oh, piano black needs to die. You should have sat in back and checked trim
The next generation model Y will likely be beyond this Caddy across the board.

I have a 2024 and I just took a 2600 kms trip this past weekend. Incredible drive and no issues fast charging at all. Easily on par with my Model 3 and better. I got about 510 kms per charge and it was fully loaded with 3 people and camping gear. Absolutely love the Lyriq. So comfortable and quiet and gets a lot of attention. Even a Model Y owner at the campsite commented there is no way the Y competes with the Lyriq at all and more with the X. The battery being so large I thing just means it will be less stressed in future. Thank you Alex. A very fair review.

I like that its different, but it's not different enough. It could've pulled off a rear sliding door pretty well, but I guess sloping roofs and longer wheelbases/longer doors are a nail in the coffin for ever having that.
Designers should be working around packaging and engineering, not the other way around. Seeing that carry-on bag awkwardly try to fit under floor and lack of a frunk, on every newly constructed model, is such a let down.

Lyriq has great proportions and a nice silhouette, but I just think it’s got way too much going on both in terms of overall design and in many of the details for me to truly love it. I find the rear end/taillights to be a huge turnoff and that’s coming from a GM/Cadillac fan and a current Cadillac owner. As for the interior, I’ve found that it looks nice but that switches and knobs tend to feel disappointingly cheap.

Today I learned that I watch too many EV reviews when I saw the $59990 starting price and actually said hmmm. that's not bad. I think I am more in the Equinox EV customer base if I want to upgrade to my Bolt EUV which is my favorite car of all time despite its DC fast charge limitations. That said, GM might come out with some competitive lease deals on the Optiq.
reply

I sat in a Lyriq and it didn’t make me want to test drive it. I’ll go back when the Optiq is out. I like the proportions of the Equinox over the Blazer so I’m hopeful.
I’m replacing a Bolt but if the Optiq doesn’t do it for me I’m probably going to pay up for Rivian. I miss my truck and I want that proprietary charging network.

reply

There is a lot I like about the Lyriq but I don't need such a large vehicle, so I am eager to check out the new Optiq in person. I really like the Equinox EV but the Optiq is not that much more expensive and you get a lot more standard features. They most likely dropped the base Lyriq to make more space between it and the Optiq.
reply

I saw a Lyriq driving down the road the other day and it’s one of those cars that is much more impressive in person. I wish the Blazer came with a little more horsepower without going all the way to an SS. The AWD Lyriq comes with more horsepower than you need, and that’s what I’m looking for. I don’t want adequate.

The reason everyone keeps pushing and pulling that lower center panel is because in the owners manual, it tells you that there is storage in that area below the jewel drawer. I saw during the pre-production videos and the press was told that by the time the car was in production there would be storage in that area.

Boy oh boy, I have a story to tell. I travelled all the way from central New Jersey to Long Island changing 5 modes of transport (car-subway-subway-train-car) to buy from a dealership for a good price on my 2024 Lyriq Sport 2. It took an entire day but it was so darn worth it.

I really hope this sets the standard for every upcoming Cadillac interior. The quality and technology in this are absolutely fantastic. Hopefully they transfer that to the xt6 that desperately needs it. If this had an ICE option I'd get it in a heartbeat. I'm just not interested in a fully electric vehicle.
reply

Nice looking vehicle when I cover that ugly useless sloping rear. You can't sell me an SUV with utility and rear view significantly compromised by styling. When is the VISTIQ coming Lyriq's sloping rear is a very disappointing and annoying deal breaker. Thank you for reviewing
reply

I think the Lyriq, in the $60-65k range, after incentives, is a solid EV value
I like its futuristic styling, combined with a more traditional Cadillac interior design
And I like the size/price position, between the Tesla Model Y and X. That was pretty smart.

reply

Another ev. For people with lots money and not much forethought. No range, no longevity. High price and a dead end in technology. In 10 years what do you think this thing will look like in the crusher.
reply

Went for the test drive and loved it however for us it doesn't seem value for money and more importantly the trunk space is very small. However if one can get a good deal, it is a very good electric car.
