2025 Ford Explorer Review - Middle-Of-The-Pack Is A Good Place To Be

Ford's Explorer isn't the biggest 3-row SUV in America, nor is it the roomiest, most efficient, quickest, best handling, etc, etc etc. But you know, that's just fine with me. Why Because making a one trick pony is pretty easy. What's harder is creating a well-rounded SUV that meets the needs of a broad range of shoppers from empty nesters to young families, from people that want some extra zip in their family hauler to folks that tow on a regular basis. What's impressive about the Explorer is how there's almost a model for everyone. Except if you want a Hybrid, that one is dead.

If you don't like the cop stigma of driving one of these then opt for the better looking and riding Lincoln Aviator. I'd cross shop this with the Mazda Cx-90, Toyota Grand Highlander and Honda Pilot. If your looking for spacious crossovers then the Buick Enclave, Chevy Traverse and GMC Acadia are your best options. I own the Lincoln Aviator and Buick Enclave and I have a family of 6 so we fit just fine with decent cargo capacity. The Buick has the most room. The Lincoln is better in everything else. I wouldn't choose a Durango unless you need better towing numbers then 5k lbs and still want a crossover especially with a V8 but that design is long in the tooth. The Ford Expedition, Chevy Tahoe/Suburban, Toyota Sequoia and Nissan Aramada are the best in size and towing capabilities.

28: 32. Wow. My biggest take away is that there a new Palisade coming, and it’s pretty stunning.
By comparison, I’m confused by the exterior of the Explorer. Lacks the same visual cohesion of their truck products. The Platinum grille looks like comically oversized chainmail, and the headlights look like a third party aftermarket purchase. Interior is fine, though that center console is really space inefficient, and too much glossy black plastic with sparkles ) in it.

I really like the Explorer - it's one of the most honest cars out. I like that it projects an image of being no frills, without being cheap - and with the quiet confidence of practically inventing the segment and as well as the legit RWD platform. It might be a fleet vehicle for cops and security guards and whatever else - but that also speaks to it being a trusted choice - and for good reason.

Up until recently I had no idea this 3. 0 Ecoboost was any different to the others. Come to find it’s an all aluminum version, whereas the Ranger Raptor uses the partial CGI block variant. Combined with the different transmission internals and driveline, I don’t think Explorer customers will ever have the option to get a Ford Performane tune to unlock that sweet 455hp and 530lbft.

Just rented one for two weeks. Been driving a Suburban. The Explorer feels more bulky than the GMC despite the smaller size. The down trim rental power train was very unsophisticated: jerky, rough gear changes. I got used to it but never came to appreciate or enjoy it. Infotainment worked all right but just utilitarian. Very good looking SUV, though.

Around 26: 00 on the Traverse/Acadia, you can option better sound detetioning at least in a Acadia. The luxury package offered includes laminated front paaenger glass and a acoustic windshield. You can always add aftermarket under the hood as well
Oh it's a 2. 5T. The trucks get the 2. 7T. It is based upon the 2. 7 though.

Alex, with the Mazda having a longitudinally mounted engine, that doesn't qualify as being rear wheel drive Or are you saying it doesn't come as a rear wheel drive only vehicle so that's why it's not real wheel drive Just trying to clarify definitions. Thanks for a great video as usual.

Don't care for the teardrop shape front to back and everything protruding interior with flap tablet, previous gen had more substantial look and smooth center console connecting to doors. pwr, rwd and little better interior materials are the only goods on this

can the navigation/map be put on the MID and I don't just mean a little portion of the display but the actual full display If so then the need for the heads up display seems to be lower, at least in my book.

I wish I could option out the XLT trim without having to get vinyl seats. Kind of crazy that Ford has now rear amber turn signals while most Toyota dropped the independent or amber rear turn signals.

I have had Fords in the past, not a recent vehicle, but Ford has had a lot of problems with ALL their turbo engines. It is going to be one of the sharpest vehicles on the flat bed tow.

The interior os a LOT better than the outgoing model and with the right color combination looks stunning. My biggest pro for this is the INSANE twin turbo v6 option.

Here’s a question for those who have mechanical knowledge. Does a rwd car improve the lifespan of a cars transmission over a fwd car Or does it make no difference

I love that the Active trim (base) has SO MANY features. So many of these are FLEET models and if the base model is loaded that means all of them are!

Love the Explorer! One of my favorite Fords! I had a 2016 Limited that had a 3. 5L V6! Happy the V6 is also available now in the Platinum trim!

American car brands are the best at putting great engines into a mediocre product and then charge more then 95 percent of the competition

The GM triplets are basically full size crossovers considering how large they are. They're probably not much smaller than the Tahoe/Yukon.
reply

Alex, the last two explorers had a full leather wrapped dash. This has plastic, fake wood and seemingly fake leather on the mid dash.

It's always worthy of mentioning that vehicles like this run perfectly well on 87 octane. It's the $ equivalent of much higher mpg imo.

Solid refresh from Ford. Enjoy seeing the 2025 models appearing around Georgia. Thanks for another in-depth review/comparison
