2026 Honda Passport Review - The Most Capable Honda Ever

Honda's new Passport is Honda's move to take on Jeep and Subaru with more off-road capability and the style to go with it. The new Passport has more than just boxy good looks however, it also gets more underbody protection, fully-boxed recovery points up front, rock sliders, a full-sized spare, and more. If you don't need 4Lo or true lockers, the Passport will give you all you really need out on the trail.

The new Honda Passport is an outstanding choice for those seeking a practical yet capable SUV, with its new rugged design, spacious interior, and all-wheel-drive capability. If you don't need the 3rd row, this could be the right vehicle for you. The ground clearance is slightly disappointing IMO, but overall. this car looks very good. Less plasticky than the 4Runner, and it's cheaper too. The Grand Cherokee can get much more luxurious though, it also has the V-6 with similar power, so at that point it's just a question of the extra $$$ you're willing to spend on a more premium audio system and better leather. I think Stellantis really want to sell them, so the dealerships are willing to negotiate the price more than usual.

Honestly, the 4Runner is a very comprised vehicle. I’ve owned a 5th gen and the only thing special about the 4Runner is reliability. Or at least the perception of it bc most people will sell it before 10 years of ownership. It’s the 3-4 owner that can actually attest to the reliability claim. I got mine when I moved to Colorado and I thought the transmission was broken bc it kept hunting gears like no other vehicle I’ve ever owned. It also sounded like a dying cow when going up i70. My wife recently got a 2025 pilot and it is SO much more comfortable, smoother, powerful, and spacious than the 4Runner. I’d rather get the passport than the 4Runner.

Granted I’m a biased Honda fan, but I really like most of what they did for this redesign. I appreciate there is a basic but not radically de-contented Trailsport option under 50K - I was expecting the off-road version to be more. That said, the full size spare tire solution is bonkers. I think it’s a little annoying that you have to move up to the Trailsport Elite to get auto dimming side mirrors and the trail camera - I see those as fundamentally more practical than ventilated leather seats and a premium sound system

I wish Honda offered this in a Touring or Elite version without all the Trailsport off-road tires and black wheels and trim.
Also disappointed Honda deleted Homelink buttons and SiriusXM satellite radio! They expect you to use MyQ Garage with Hondalink, both of which require subscriptions, and they expect you to use the SiriusXM app on your phone via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, which of course requires a cellular connection!
All of the above is why I’ve crossed this new Passport off my shopping list.

Wow, never thought I'd be considering a FWD based AWD CUV over a 4Runner but here we are. This Honda makes the 4Runner look like the rough draft as far as interiors go, while the Honda interior is the polished final version. I'm very curious as to how it actually handles difficult terrain (let's be honest here, the course prepared is nothing too taxing) and if it'll rise to the occasion (I think it will) or falter like so many of the other badge and sticker package CUV soft roaders out there.

Crazy that Honda can't figure out how to get a hybrid into something like this. Feels like a no brainer for something that's going to get city-driven 90% of the time. Honda already positions this and the Ridgeline to be more expensive than most of its competition so I'm not sure the price increase would hurt sales that much. Not a chance this gets 20mpg in real world driving, it's 4, 500lbs with a V6 and even more brick-shaped than the previous Passport.

Kind of neat, but not sure offers many advantages over a true 4wd like 4Runner. I guess ride comfort and all wheel drive versus part time 4wd in lower 4Runner trims. But price, fuel economy, cargo capacity, and ground clearance are no better or worse. The Pilot TrailSport makes a lot more sense to me, as a significant difference between that and true 4wd, 3-row SUVs which are basically the full size ones.

I'd rather have the Santa Fe XRT Hybrid that boasts the same ground clearance and close enough passengers/cargo space. The main reason being the V6 in the Honda still requires a timing belt replacement every 100K miles which is a 1K job. Not to mention it gets kinda awful mpg. Also 46K starting is a bit ridiculous. I know all cars have gotten expensive but wow

Watch out 4Runner I doubt it. One's an actual RWD-based truck, the other is a FWD minivan based platform with a few off-roadish features added. If you're serious about off-roading, you buy the Toyota.
One good point about this Passport: shorter front overhang than any other recent Honda. Wish they'd do that for CR-V and Accord which have ridicules front overhang.

Curious how the PTU operates on this. It can shut power off to the rear axle; does it have a clutch pack as well It must Can it lock power 50/50 front/rear Or does it not lock, and once you spin a wheel it robs power from the axle that has traction That's how the full-time system worked in my '94 Cherokee, but once you put it in Part-Time, it was a 50/50 split.

I may have missed it, but is this fully built in the US Or does that price going to have a bunch of tariffs added to it I do really like how it looks. Best looking Passport maybe since the original. I do dislike the clutch based 4wd systems, as they tend to not last long if you actually offroad them. But for the average person, this thing should be fantastic.

Wow, Honda is the now the style leader in this segment, which may be a sentence that has never been spoken before. (They really ought to style the Ridgeline like this -- maybe then they would sell) This may also be the roomiest 2-row CUVs in terms of cargo & rear seating. I like everything about this but the price and maybe the fuel economy.

I hate the trend of vehicles cosplaying as off-roaders when they will never see anything but pavement.
And I'm not some off-roader elitist, the problem is when you create these aesthetic, you incentivize purchase of vehicles that are larger when people need. This is not aspirational in Europe for a reason

Alex, How can this Honda Passport be more 'capable' than the original, body-on-frame Isuzu Passport While the second row is spaciously impressive, the absence of a 40/22/40 feature represents a major oversight. At least Honda came through with wonderful white wheels.

i love this i current have a 4runner, i could consider this if i wanted something different but i just do not want a push select shifter and i think Honda has one of the worst ones. I wish we had a regular shifter like we still find in some current Hondas on the lot.

Test drove one. V6 felt a little underpowered, but I drive a 2 door 2. 7 twin turbo Bronco. Passport is very comfortable and way more livable than my Bronco. I also don’t trust my ecoboost to last 100, 000 miles. That Honda 3. 6 will be super reliable.

Looks like Honda did a great job hitting the marks with this one. I was waiting for a Passport update like this to come along, but the wait was too long, and got a 2024 Pilot. This would be oh-so-familiar, yet more capable.
reply

I applaud Honda for giving the option of having brown interior on the some of the off road models (Trailsport Elite and Trailsport Elite Blackout! Not everyone who wants the off road version of an SUV also wants black interior!

I know this is a Passport video but I'm going to need more information on the Pilot shown at 23: 18. Are they going to offer that front skid plate/bumper for the new pilot We're you able to have a closer look at it
reply

The SH-AWD type of setup is really special during cornering and off-road. Open diff setups kill power, but this system can be proactive and keep the power flowing without applying the brakes as much. Very smart.
