Your absolutely right about using you tube, identi-fix or other media if possible. You may never find what your looking for but chances are someone has done the hours of tracing and locating such issues. Just freshly liscensed in the early 80’s I had a Buick that had a pinched wire in the dash blowing fuses. I bet I had more hours then I charged finding it. That was the days before media so wiring diagrams or just time and money. My boss didn’t buy manuals. Jump forward to a few years back, I was working on a dodge truck for its annual safety inspection. It wouldn’t crank to start and get it off hoist when done. If memory serves me, it gave a communication error cde. I went to identifix, entered code to find any information about it. Some guy had posted to look up under dash on left side near parking brake lever bracket for chaffed wire or green. Low and behold his description was bang on. I think he saved me about 2 hours time I would never have got back.
It was a good thing this guy was honest and admitted this issue was happening on and off. Some people may have put the blame on me saying it never did it before and I must have done something. I think I rewarded him by charging only . 5 hr

Friend of mine has a 2017 supercharged roush f150 5. 0 and I remember when it was brand spanking new the charging system failed within the first year. We were in a small town on a road trip when it happened so there was no hope of getting it solved so he bought 4 deep cycle batteries and we ran each one until the vehicle stalled then switched to the next one to get it home. That truck also sheared all the teeth off the rear axles ring gear about a year after that and ruptured the intercooler when he hit a puddle a bit too quickly. I recall him constantly bragging about how fast the thing was and that it makes 632 hp. until I smoked him with my beater 71 Oldsmobile that makes at best 400 hp, and weighs 5000 lbs without me in it.

Good morning South Main auto! Super video, no, I didn’t remember seeing Ivan’s video.
My 2005 F150 had a problem with the right hand fog light. It would work and then it wouldn’t work. I thought it was a bad plug so I replaced. It turns out it had the brown wire syndrome. Everywhere I check the wire in the harness that was easy to get to it had the copper turning brown. That wire also Y’s near the ABS pump on the left side of the engine compartment. It also carries the load of both fog lights. My solution what’s the tap into the harness before the connection and run a new wire over to the right fog light.

I had this same problem and Ford told me it's ok when the charge drops to 8 volts because the computer knows when to add the full 13 volts but after they replaced 4 batteries and an alt they finally replaced the broken wire, I had to buy a booster pack so I could start the truck and I was not to happy about jumping a new truck daily. It was a new truck so warranty work they did not want to do, Honestly I think they know they are building them with defects because it's year after year they have the same problems, You would think after being in business for 100 years they would know how to build a car that works,

Has a now retired telephone engineer most of the falls on copper phone lines were down to corrosion due to water getting into wires and joints but you try and keep the U. K. wether out of the network i stop to talk to one of the guys who was working on a faulty line and you could hear the water inside a modern joint closer and that’s were his fault was putting shorts on the lines inside but everything is going over to fibre in U. K. which is waterproof but will snap if you don’t get the right bend in it but you could not use fibre to change cars batteries but maybe to send signals to and from computer units

Today we’re in the wild of south main auto watching Eric O eat his customers diagnostic time properly with a modern knife and fork & not with the preverbal parts cannon’. It’s rare to find a shop in the wild doing proper diagnosing, but we’re lucky to have seen the apex predator Mr O do just that within 15 minutes of being set up in the wild of south main auto. Full of tributes and salutes to other diagnosticians in the wilds of automotive repair fields in 2024. Now to try and get out of here without startling Mrs. Odamn that bell got us again!

I rarely work on Ford's but I'll tuck this one away in the ol' memory module just in case. I can't tell you how much I've altered my troubleshooting strategy after watching your videos. I learned a lot about circuit chasing from aircraft mechanic school and working as an A&P but vehicles are a next level of complexity and the way you explain things really helps when I'm looking for green electrons running in red wires.

Good man giving credit to others I know you would have found it and may just have taken longer so it saved the costumer some labor on diagnostics by searching some videos. I do the same when working on my vehicles and implements. I also by oil by the drum and it lasts my a couple years Keller Hart is the best deal and quality Thanks for your sensible videos and making it easy to understand

Waiting for Mr O. To realize the vastness of the researchable how-to database that he’s created with the SMA archive.
If you are pondering if there is value to another dumb brake job’ . Yes. Not only do you always entertain but you provide a correct how-to roadmap for someone in the future. SMA is an impressive collection of work. Well done!

A damaged/broken wire. This particular wire seems to be a common problem, maybe because of the bracket Bad engineering design
Good fix Mr. O. Battery should be happier now.
I remember when Ivan had that damaged wire. That You Tube resource was a BIG help!

I had a similar problem with my fuel pump relay getting voltage but no amperage. Like you, I went to YT, found someone else who had the same problem. Found a common failure point and had it fixed in 40 mins. YT is a great resource thanks to creators like you.

As a 40 year electrican you have described in my experience is a ghost voltage. Old analog show them better then digital meters. Corrosion, a conductor burnt into 2 peace’s but laying in moisture creates it in my experience. Excellent job in explaining it.

Nice video! It’s not cheating. It’s scholarship. It’s how humans advance. We used to do it through books. Now there are so many ways. Of note: comments on this video will be down 58. 36% because you didn’t video the soldering

You're an honest man Eric O! It will make you sleep better at night, as you already know. Yes I did see Ivan's video a while ago also and it was seen by the Ford dealer also. They should of did a TSB on that poor wiring already.

Day after election here in Illinois! And they still cannot count ballots But good old SMA and his white board will show me the way! The journey man wrench will teach his young apprentice and us viewers how FORD fails and then gets fixed!

Another great video. I think you might have missed your true calling Mr. O, you would have been a great teacher, you are a great teacher. I am always learning some neat new trick for diagnostics or just general repair on here.

I am amazed by how many vehicles have alternators down low in the bay. Especially on a 4x4. It seems to me that a part with so much relying on it you wouldn't want down in the weather. Everything depends on those things

You and Ivan need to cut one wire on your own vehicle. One butthurt connector and the other soldered. Tape it good with some 3m 33 and the race begins. Who gets the green crusty first! Thanks for the teaching teach!
