The older Escape's were so much easier and better to work on. My mom has a 2011 with the 2. 5L 4-banger, and it is night and day compared to this junk. There is plenty of room on every side of the engine to work with, the battery is in the front corner where you would expect. In my opinion the 2. 5L was a pretty good engine, although I don't know how good the 6F35 transmissions are. I've kept it serviced like clockwork for her, oil changes every 3500 miles, transmission fluid changed every 30k miles, but the transmission is already on the way out. Once it is fully warmed up it drives ok-ish still, but when it's cold it barely shifts and when it does it will jar you in your seat. I was thinking about putting a transmission in it for her, but not sure it's worth the expense and hassle. Even doing the work myself, transmissions on these are very pricey, even for used ones that have more miles than this one. And a rebuilt unit is at least 2500 dollars. I'm probably going to find her a nice Lexus or Honda SUV instead.

If you think the battery is difficult, my 2019 ford transit connect is similar to the Escape and my ABS module went bad and would apply the brakes whenever it wanted with only 15k miles on the clock but I was out of Warranty and they had no parts available and wanted $2600 to replace it but after 4 months of sitting in my driveway still no parts. I went on Ebay and found one for $100 and low and behold I found out the ABS Module and Pump was behind the battery! That was fun times! Not! I did have to buy a scan tool to do the PMI (Forscan was useless for the PMI) but now I'm the neighborhood free mechanic now when someone gets a check engine light. lol

I had to replace my wife's 6 year old original battery in her 2016 Ford Escape. 1. Had to take off the wiper blades, disconnect the water shroud above the battery, take of the brake reservoir, all to just get to the battery. Disconnected the positive and had to disconnect the ground cable because you couldn't get to the negative terminal. Reinstalled a new battery and put everything back together. Had to take it to the Ford dealer because the wiper blades weren't connected properly. Told my wife the next car she buys, if you can't slide the battery in, don't buy it.

The good old glory days working in a Chrysler garage late 60s early 70s I went to training 2 days a month and the dealer would pay. And Chrysler had a thing called serviceability to make things easier. oil filter easy to get at spark plugs easy to change temp and oil sensors on the outside of the engine ect. Also engines with plenty of space to work on to change any needed parts. The foreign cars were the ones harder to work on then and started the hard to work on vehicles and US automakers fowled pursuit with complications and not so easy to work on

Just FYI on the VW batteries, you can use a non OEM one, the serial numbers is only used by the computer to detect the battery has been changed. When you install a non-serialised battery, just take the serial number off the old battery, and increment it by one on the last digit, so if the original was XXXXXXXXXXXX5 put XXXXXXXXXXXX6 into the computer. All will be well. No other data is taken from the serial apart from recognizing a battery change has occured, and for the battery health monitoring to reset to a fresh battery.

I went to the Chevy stealership to buy a battery for an 2017 Equinox. ( last year for the V6. Price was fair. I asked the guy if I need to power the car while changing battery to protect info in computer. He said he didn't think so. Of course I don't trust them so I bought the little thing that you hook to the car ( cigar plug or OBD2 )with a spare battery just in case. It was only 20$. Did not lose the radio stations. Did not have to reflash the computer for hundreds of dollars. Probably didn't matter but i'm paranoid.

What is it with American automotive manufacturers designing vehicles that make simple repairs complicated
It cost me $120 to replace a headlight on a 2008 Buick LaCrosse because the battery, battery box, cross member support and front bumper have to be removed or loosened to access the headlight bulb from behind.
BTW it was a rhetorical question as I know the whole reasoning behind it.
Thanks for listening!

Have a '17 Escape. I found doing it the way you showed was better than the recommended repair. They want you to remove the wipers, and cowl to lift the battery out. I didn't have a scan tool that could reset the BMS, but found that key on engine off if you flash the brights 5 times, then pump the brake 3 times, the battery light will go from solid to flashing, the BMS is then reset.

Never thought watching you change a battery on a car could be so amusing, i have a Ford Kuga (European version of the Escape, and the one you were working on have a 1. 5 Lt engine not the 2. 0 petrol (Gas, I love my car, and yes it has had it's issues, but it goes well and hasn't cost that much to use in the 7 years i have had it. thanks for the great content.

it would be something if the engineers would have a conference with only 101 auto tech's before a car is put into production. Those same engineers will complain to the dealership when they have to pay extra labor for a simple repair. But this is and will never be the case they all sat down and helped each other.

Love that you showed the battery reset! I've replaced too many 'new' batteries due to this not being done. The charging strategy for an old battery cooks the life out of new ones and before you know it you have a customer complaint of I need a new battery every 2 years but the original lasted 6

I bought a new Mazda 3. The battery would discharge overnight. The voltage and load test said it is a good battery. I changed it out for a good one I had. That one works. Anybody know why my new Mazda battery would lose charge overnight but my Walmart battery worked fine

That's a pain in the butt to get to! Simple for someone who knows. Question. Wouldn't it have been easier to remove the plastic cowling to get to the battery
Not owning a Ford so I raise that question.
Anyway, Good one Mr. O. Thanks for the tech tips.

I had a 2013 and in 2017 had to replace the battery. Closet dealer was an hour away, and no auto parts had done one. So after removing the air cleaner, both wiper arms, the top cowling, I was able to access the battery and replace it. A year later I got rid of it.

I always liked these cars until I saw this Vid. That is a Krazy way to design a car. Ford should be ashamed! You figure about an hour's worth of labor just to change this battery, it will cost you at least $130 more then it should to change a battery. Bummer!

Ford, as usual, giving the middle finger to the customer and the poor mechanic who has to work on their shitty product.
That's why your the mechanic and I'm not.
My frustration would have gone nuclear the moment I found out where they put the battery.

This video brought back bad memories for me. I changed the battery in my 2013 Ford Escape. I removed the cowl because I didn't know what I was doing, and had all day to do it. I put in a NAPA Gold battery (Not a sponsor, and yes the plastic bits do break.

Oh wow. There's really a tool for spreading the terminals You mean my solution of using a hammer to knock it on isn't recommended; -) My son has a '16 Focus and I thought that battery was bad to replace. similar location set back under the cowel.

This is a good example as to why I will not buy a modern car. Asides the fact that today's cars are riddled with defects, the engineering is so retarded to where you have to take half the damn car apart just to get to the one part you need to.
