I was so happy to see it was just the Tension Pulley! I have a Chevy with the exact Motor and boy did that noise scare me. Thanks for showing us its not Always the worst case. Eric this was by no means a silly video. As I said above I can't be the only GM 5. 3 owner that had a lump in their throat when you first started it. The amount of exhales when you found the pulley was heard around the world!

Decades ago I had a 1970 Volvo 145. Driving it home from work on the freeway I heard the unmistakable sound of a rod knock. I got it home and dropped the pan. no loose rod bearings! The sound, even at pull-through, was actually coming from under the timing cover. The fiber ringed timing gear had separated, with the fiber piece riding up until it slapped back down. I replaced the gear and all was well.

I've had many GM tensioners fail, just as an owner. Half the time it's the pulley bearing the other half it's the tension spring. They fail so often that when I put a SBC in my 1980 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme and used the accessory drive plate from a 1989 GMC k2500 I replaced the tensioner and bought a spare. All through the 90's Ford also had tensioner problems, theirs would violently eject the pulley.

Eric, I know you worry about making a silly video about a belt tensioner but think about all the people you just helped diagnose their belt tensioner. Even if they can't do the work atleast they will know what the noise is and can have it fixed. Can you tell me the model of the Autel that you usually use in your video's I'm looking at buying a new one and that one looks pretty capable.

Tighten bolt. Put belt on. Check bolt tension. Assemble bit and bobs. Check bolt tension. Close hood and while driving it back to the parking lot remember to check the bolt tension. Shut off engine and go get 15mm wrench to check bolt tension. Call customer to pick up vehicle. Can't sleep at 3am because you can't remember if you tightened the bolt. Gotta love being a mechanic.

The best videos are when Mrs O’ appears and the interaction with you. It’s obvious that you two are a based couple and still like each other!
This is saying a lot for marriage! It can work, even at work with the right mate!
Plus, you gave me hope for my GMC Sierra! Thought for sure the DMF took out the cam when I heard you start that truck

Super job as always South Main Auto LLC! And the Videos are never too silly you are teaching the masses, and that = Priceless for those who are not aware. My 1992 BMW is rattling this spring when I took it out of storage, I'm afraid to look but you give me new hope that maybe it won't be the water pump and this old guy can relax.

5: 14, Can't help myself. Way back when Steve Allen had his 11: PM show I'd stay up Friday nights and watch it, late 50s early 60s. You could hear a car horn outside honk on air, and Steve, no matter what he was involved in, would yell, I'll be right out as do I mentally to this day. I guess it's an age thing.

You are a mechanical genius. The way you attack a malfunction from code number through your paid wiring service, following power and ground until you discover the problem. Your corrosion expectations many times direct you to the simplest of solutions. I wish i lived closer to you.

Belt tensioner bearing. Hmmm never realized them buggers got that noisy. Good thing he got it in before it tore through the accessory belt. Bad things could have happened if the noise went away all of a sudden. Got a good sniffer as usual Eric. Shweet sound of a fixed GM

2 weeks ago, THE EXACT SAME THING ON MY RAM. I got the gates package and replaced them all. But man when it first starts you're thinking hemi tick or ac compresser. Everything but the driv2e wheels.
both the idlers and the tensioner were bad so the kit was the deal.

Not so small a blessing to have a life life partner that gets what you do. If I'm out in the driveway DIYing it to trade $1000 in shop labor for knuckle wounds, all my wife usually says to me is are you done playing around yet I need to go save 2$ because mayo is on sale!

Reminds me of the time a mechanic asked me what my Cummins (Semi Tractor) sounded like, I told him just start it you'll hear it, you should have seen his face and how fast he shut it off. Turned out the Crankshaft had broken in half.
reply

That was the noisest tensioner I've ever heard! It sounded like the battery may be a little tired when the engine was cranked over. HHMMM. Maybe the next video for this vehicle
Good one Mr. O. Nice to see Mrs. O.

reply

Well Mr. O you have a lot of Chevrolet around you unfortunately here in Orange County California we have a bunch of these junk Teslas around here running people off the road that's what those drivers are all about.

General Motors: Keeping the South Main Auto lot full and supplying endless content for viewers. Thanks GM! And thanks Eric for taking care of customers and viewers who want to be vicarious mechanics everyday.
reply

Dang that was very loud and scary it sound like something was about to let go in the engine today with the customers lucky day turn out to be something simple instead of major work good job Eric has always
reply

If it burns so much oil, then why on earth wouldn't you get the customer to diagnose the issue I love your gravy videos too there Eric O and Mrs. O. was right on the money as well, no exhaust leak there.
reply

You can pretty well guarantee when you are in the service industry when the phone rings somebody wants something. I accidentally buried mine in the woods, had peace for a week until the new one arrived.
reply

My old Benz had an occasional tick from the timing cover area. I was convinced it was the timing chain or vacuum pump. After a lot of diag and parts cannon, turns out the problem was the belt tensioner.
