As a welding inspector at the plant I work at, I can say with certainty that if you submitted a welding coupon to me I would have no issues with it. Let's face it Eric, you have stated you have no training in car repair either but that doesn't seem to affect your ability to satisfy a customer. As far as facing a fine for not replacing a catalytic convertor with a C. A. R. B (the fine folks at the California Air Resources Board) certified unit, I know you would never do that at all. I know your letters on your New York State Inspection sign is the right color as well. Just think of the satisfaction you have for your contributions to the greater good. GREAT VIDEO!

California catalytic emissions standards are the reason that I got rid of my 2008 Buick LaCrosse.
Ran fine, everything worked but needed a new catalytic converter at 156, 000 miles (how convenient, eh.
Couldn't put in a bypass because of state inspection for emissions, couldn't buy a generic cat and one wasn't available even if I wanted to put one in.
So, it would cost $1900 for a cat and two O2 sensors on a vehicle that was worth $2500 max at the time.
I had a friend who used the old spacer under the O2 sensor trick to pass inspection and then I sold it.
Thanks GM and the American government!

So for those that don't live in NY, to give you an idea of what Eric is talking about, a catalytic converter from Walker for a car like this could be had for around $150-200. With the CARB certification needing to be in place that same cat is now $1300 or more. For nothing more than a stamp that said it went through a special test. Ridiculous. The cats are all made in the same factories and meet or exceed the manufacturer's specification. NY should not have to follow another states regulations.

I put a new flange on the bank 1 catalytic converter of my 2010 Odyssey using a cheap flux core welder. Made the flange out of 1/4 inch steel. It's been fine. My rear cat's flanges were severely corroded (like this video) and leaking but I replaced that cat, along with the Y pipe. I saved the old cat, however, in case I ever have motivation or thr need to repair its flanges. Honda could improve their flange material.

You look alot like a guy I briefly worked for 20 years ago he purchased an $8k gas powered arc welder for 'business use' and therefore was a welder. I know you are not him however because of key differences. 1. He owned a company that made household cabinets (mainly kitchen, and was terrified of working on automobiles. also.
2. But probably more importantly he was a certified IDIOT. Which you are not

Have to say first surprised that you welded flanges on most shops would've just welded a piece of pipe on. Second nice shot of the crack dealer truck outside when pulling the car in.
Wow for not being certified from what you can see from my house those welds were perfect.
Lastly you appear to be a pretty lucky man to have an awesome wife like that

No, shop like yours here in the Maryland area around DC. At least I don't know of any that my vehicles would be safe overnight. I do have one, but the father is an a$$hole, and won't let his son run the shop. he is a micromanager, which never works out for the customer in many ways, such as sticking to a quoted price, and timeline.

$300 vs. $900 for a CARB converter. What a ripoff. Is that like where grocery stores can sell identical kosher items for triple the price just because it has been blessed And how would anyone know you installed a regular converter As long as emissions inspection is done from the OBD2 port, it would pass.

We have a Nissan NV work van at the shop that had the cat outlet flange break off. The cost for a new converter was ridiculous, so I took the truck home and welded the flange back in. That was 3 years ago and still going strong. I wish more shops looked out for the customer more.

Eric, you and Ray are a rare breed indeed, always trying to help the customer save some of their hard earned money and doing things RIGHT. In a world full of greed, it just goes to show you that there are still some people who actually care. Have a great weekend my friend

It's nice to know a shop that will weld on flanges or splice in a piece. A couple of weeks ago I sent a friend to another shop because I knew he would fix instead of replace her exhaust. A new muffler and converter flange welded on and no need to replace the entire system.

It was interesting watching you welding inside the flange in the rear pipe, the light shining through the gap until it finally gave a diamond ring just before disappearing completely. A bit like you could have seen on the solar eclipse if it wasn't cloudy.

I hung iron for 10 years and believe me I have seen some pretty bad welders. You are better than some certified welders I have seen. Anyone that is in an occupation that requires welding can definitely validate my claims. Nice work sir bravo.

I have the same welding certification and that has not hindered me from fixing or welding whatever I have to. Looks to me like you are doing good work and saving people some money at the same time and that is a good thing. Peace.

As a 70 yo DYier I have always been told to disconnect the battery when welding on a vehicle. Is that not a true safe guard to prevent electronic damage to the vehicles. Love your posts. I'm never to old to learn new tricks.

Another good job, saving money for the customers. Considering all the cars that come into the shop now are built with metric fasteners, wouldn't it be easier to use metric bolts on things like exhaust fittings
