btw. my truck wouldn't pass any of your inspections if it were up there. Hollowed cats, check engine light stays on. I don't ever remember if my e brakes work since I don't have a stick shift and automatics don't really need them. Oh, and I run 100% ethanol free gas with a tad bit of some spicier gas mixed in. My tires stick out beyond the fenders a little. Lots of things. Alabama don't require it so if you want to forgo those inspections. come to Alabama where we don't inspect anything. even licenses or insurance half the time. LOL. Cheers.

State dmvs not knowing cars or having common sense - I was an inspector for years and there were specific limits of how many and how long the cracks on your windshield could be. Failed a car once because the windshield was absolutely trashed and hard to see out of. Guy comes back in for the reinspection after he just knocked the whole piece of glass out. Just wanted to verifty, so I called the state office. They told me that was perfectly fine to have no windhshield at all (but the wipers still had to have good blades) and that I should quit looking for ways to fail people. And we had to use a micrometer fixture to check ball joint play - but the Fords with the spring above the upper control arm (Falcon, Mustang, etc) were allowed 1/4 of play.

Politicians are writing laws that they haven't a clue about! Actually, it is not surprising, but if people actually understood, they would be afraid for their lives. Here is a true story, illinois! Emissions test on my 5 year old truck in excellent condition! Fails emissions for a literally 2 minute repair! However, the car or half car in the next lane has see through doors (rusted, no header panel, and headlights that point into someone's 2nd story bedroom! And a taped plastic bag for the 2 right doors windows! However, it passes emissions, so it gets the ok for license plates to drive on the roads! Now tell me how that makes any kind of sense. My truck, by the way, had no check engine light! A new gas cap was needed.

Hi Eric, I should be dead from lead poisoning, from siphoning gas when I was a kid till they took it out of gas 60 yrs. later! I tried wearing bifocals, about broke my neck walking through the shop, wore them 1 day! Pa. still wants to insp. My 30 yr. old S-10 and do emissions test! sorry Under 5K a yr. It would pass anyway, always has! The shop owner just shakes his head! State Insp. I think is a good thing, got some real gems on the road around here! People would get really pissed if I failed their vehicle, I would tell them to Go talk to the owner! Oh and H/D has blaster brake clean under $4 a can, and it's the good stuff! I buy it by the case! NY is such a commie state. Way too many rules and regulations. And whatever they use on the roads there just destroys cars way worse than here in central Ohio. I appreciate there being inspections, but as you've stated the lick em stick em shops get away with too much so you still have dangerous cars on the roads.
I went out to Long Island when i worked for safelite auto glass to help out there back in 2015, and they took us to a mets game at citi field and it was cool, but I wouldn't go back. They told us the following day we could have gone into NYC with them or done whatever we wanted so we went to the beach and crushed some beers and had a good time.

As an old geezer who is half deaf, I miss not having the closed captioning on this video. I'm hoping that it's because of your new, overly featured and complicated editing program. I'm not complaining, just don't want to miss any witty commentary just because I can't hear you. Headphones don't really help. Fortunately, I can still read along as long as I have on my reading glasses that I wear all the time now because I can't focus very well without them. Like you, I used to walk into things if I wore my reading glasses all the time but that's not much of a problem anymore.

In Ireland a ball-joint is considered a suspension component and will fail inspection if it's worn, insecure, or if the rubber dust cover is damaged. Inspections here are contracted out to an independent inspection service. A repair shop can't do inspections because of the conflict of interests. Some people agree, some don't. But on paper it's the most consistent vehicle testing network in the world with above 99% compliance with audits. You're probably thinking there's must not be many audits right There's 50 test centres and there's well over 10, 000 audits per year

Is there any reason why you don't go aftermarket on something like the backing plate (h3ll, maybe you did, idk. lol. I can see on fl33bay that they are 140 each. but there are also a pair of 2 for only 40, shpped. I would hat3 to see what the OEM's cost. Is there any reason not to go with the aftermarket ones for 40 Could have saved money and had new back plates on both sides. .. I understand the importance of getting OEM O2 and MAF sensor, etc. but for something simple like a backing plate-- why not get the cheap one Is there any reason for avoiding them

Most of the time a set of varifocals that go from real close ( closer than your normal reading, fetching rusty clips out of grooves close) to I can see the other side of the room clearly prescription are really good around the workshop, but of course when you're under a car there always loads of times when you can't look through the right part of the lense to see what you're doing properly, and then yo uptentially need idk say 10 different pairs of readers to cover all the use cases.

Premier Pro is a great program but as you say the learning curve is very long. I got annoyed when they made the transition to a subscription service, switching to Apple Final Cut Pro. It's a little simpler but almost as powerful. The new boy on the block is Davinci Resolve which I'm told is free and at least as good. Another great video, Eric. It made my struggle with a Subie wheel bearing seem so much harder, even though I started out the same way you did.

Brother. I'm a carpenter, and I felt that comment about the glasses. I can see fine until I need to be sure to set that finishing nail. Or read anything smaller than my BIG ruler/tape. It SUCKS having to swap out glasses all day. At least in my profession, no-one laughs at you for wearing bags/apron (with glasses in the top pocket): ) Getting older sucks, but it still beats the alternative. And working is better than dying.

Well my NY state motor vehicle inspector licence expired in 1974 but I remember failing cars for bad brakes, cracked windshield, Tire rods, Idler arms, Pitman arms & yes Ball joints even control arm bushings & wheel bearings. I guess a lot has changed, they are just happy to plug in the ODBII and look for codes. Oh Ya, my 1969 Hemi Road Runner took leaded gas and I got a Steak Knife with a fill up too!

Yes Eric I'm frickin 70 and I pumped gas at an Esso station at the time they changed the name to Exxon. We were a full service station meaning you could come in get a dollars worth of gas and make me check all of your fluids and pump your tires up in the pouring rain. The good old days

So why would someone remove and not replace that stuff. I had a pair of glasses made that had bifocals put in the top and bottom. made a world of difference. Just dont drive with them on. Things get wonky. As a VA SI i will say they do keep up with the times but are not worth doing from the mechanics point of view because we are only allowed to charge $20 for what takes an hour.

Hi Mr O, my God, how so out of touch are the powers that be in New York. In England our vehicles are inspected every year once the vehical reaches 3 years old. I'm glad to hear you do the inspection to the letter. There are rouge garages here that don't as well, and people's lives are dependent on these vehicals to be safe. Keep up the good work. With the DMV laws and inspections, it's more about the money they take in more then safety. They want to check simple things to make it quick. If they have to check stuff like ball joints they would have to jack the car up which takes time. Check simple stuff quickly, get your dollars and out you go. If the ball joint falls off down the road, that's your problem.

I live in Indiana and we have the same problem with rust. I got into the habit years ago of using the parking brake every time I park my car. Since I'm an Automotive Mechanic, I've seen plenty of parking brakes that were locked up. Either the cable breaks when you try to apply it or worse, it activates and then won't release. USE IT OR LOSE IT!

I thought you should always use the parking brake, as just putting it in park, puts the whole weight of the vehicle on the parking pawl, and will damage the gearbox after a while. I also stop, put it in neutral, apply the parking brake turn the engine off then paut the gearbox in park. That way the weight of the car is on the brakes not the gearbox.

Short story for all you parking brake conspiracist. Prior to 1960 all master cylinders had a single chamber to them, so it was common for you to have a total brake failure. At this point you prayed the parking brake worked. In 1967, Uncle Sam mandated dual master cylinders and total brake failure became very rare.
