Great video, thank you real life saver.
I just pulled mine. 2005 matrix. The inner smaller bearing was stuck inside the diff housing. I had to pry the coupler housing off the inner bearing since it was stuck and then pulled inner bearing out with a puller. I bought the car from the original owner and car only has 62, 000 original miles and has been in the pacific NW all its life so no salt. The gear oil is very clean and every thing looks new. It has been to the dealer for all scheduled maintenance. However, the inner bearing looks like the grease is very old and dry. the inner bearing has stains on the outside and so does the differential where the bearing seats. These stains is why it was stuck in the differential housing and hard to get out. What would cause these strains? Is it old grease or oxidation? How should I clean the area where the new inner bearing seats to the differential?

I have a 2005 matrix awd and your video was usual in finding and fixing the problem. Hey do know if you can order that sleeve that comes out when removing old passenger cv axel. The carrier bearing always stays attached to the inner sleeve thats in the transfer case. Any tricks to removing that passenger cv axel. It's like a nightmare to get out since they always rust in that inner sleeve. Toyota quotes crazy prices to replace the cv axel.

So, I screwed up and ended up hitting the transmission coupler with a hammer, instead of the brass drift. It was only once, but it left a good mark where the drive shaft bolts to the transmission coupler. Does anyone think this will be a problem? I had 2x4s set up like in the video, and when I hit the brass drift, the 2x4 on one side gave away, and POW. Nothing cracked, but there's a good outline where the hammer hit.

It would have been nice to know how you removed the drive shaft. On the 2010 Matrix, the drive shaft is attached to the viscous coupler with studs sticking out of the v. c. Therefore the shaft has to move forward to slide off the studs. I spent 4 hours under the car and couldn't figure it out. In your video, I don't see any studs sticking out of the coupler.

I was quoted over 3000 to replace the rear differential in our 2006 Matrix. I followed your lead and replaced the bearings. It ended up costing around 300. 00. Worked like a charm. Parts were hard to find. It saved us thousands and I did it myself. I could only find the parts on eBay. Toyota wanted to sell me a whole differential. Thank you.

Not sure if anyone will reply at this point, but any idea what the toyota Part #s are? Does it matter? Having some difficulty sourcing. My Matrix is a 2009 - should I assume it's compatible? I REALLY don't want to get rid of my care, and this repair should save me from doing that. Thanks for the great vid!

Bought my 03 vibe with this problem 123k miles took to over 4 places before they finally understood this had no direct correlation between repairing the BEARINGS and not the rear differential or the viscous couple! Make sure they know you know what you're talking about! Cheers

People, if you're looking for info on the parts look in the description part of this, then click the show more, he has provided those for us. Also if you do a search for Technical Service Bulliten (TSB) DL002-07 dated 23 Aug, 2007 you will find the Toypta info for this repair.

Eric, Eric Eric. I know these vids are older, but why in the WORLD are you using a hammer anywhere near a brand new bearing ESPECIALLY when you have a press right around the corner from where you are? ?? Love the vids btw. that bearing thing just bothers me!
