I had a customer return for a comeback. In a previous video we fixed his check engine light and a few days later it is on AGAIN? So now what? Do you eat it or do you rely on your process to show the customer it is an entirely different problem at hand?

So what do you do if there are no codes, and for example a no start warm, but cold it starts get it to start warm after cleaning fuel system, comes back same problem. Would you eat it, or go and say that was part of the problem, and do more tests, I had a similar problem, turns out it was worn out electrical parts, where not falling, but giving wrong readings, know I paid for both shop visits, now I believe he was right to for I believe both where needed, and the motor runs like new. And I am glad you went over this for most feal well it was running and now it not. And you did this by the book, you documented the first, compared it to know, and it was totally different and can show the costomer.

I say you did the right thing Mr. O. If you keep documentation of the repair you can always show the customer if he has a problem somewhere down the line. The problem is the rip-off mechanic who tells his unsatisfied customer some fairy tale that the customer cannot prove otherwise because he does not know enough about automotive systems. At least you can walk him through your repair to the extent he knows you are being honest with him. I got involved in the automotive world because I was tired of getting ripped off because I did not know enough at the time to do it myself. Some mechanics are outright criminals. They see an opportunity to rip someone off & the go for it - temptation.

Some uninformed folks might not know anything a bout engine codes. all they know is that the CheckEngine light came on last time and you fixed it. . Now theirCcheckEngine light is on again. so they believe that your last fix failed.
So you need to educate the customer when you send them home after the 1st repair. that just because the CheckEnginre light may come on again. it may NOT be from the same thing as last time.
Like your toe hurt so you go to the doctor. he finds an ingrown nail and fixed it. But three months later your toe hurts again. you can't complain to the doctor that it's the same thing. because maybe this time it could be a bunyon, or arthritis, or gout.

UPDATE: Customer pick up his truck, replaced his purge valve and ran a full drive cycle in a few days. The light is out, he got a lick'em stick'em inspection and all is well. The old Chivvy lives to die an other day. And to answer the question yes, I do charge for the second diag on a separate issue from the first one.

Just be honest and document your diagnosis of the root cause and what should be done to remedy the issue. There will always be customers that have been victimized by predatory shops. Digital imaging is so important in todays business practices. Customers in general like to know how things work and what the cause was.

Great video but u standing over that running engine to test the signal on the purge solnoid gave me flashbacks on how a friend was checking something on his engine while on ND he accidentally grabbed this belt ND the belt chopped his finger off yikes anyway good vid tho

If only doctors were able to diagnose patients as a good mechanic does cars I would pay the hefty sum of a doctor visit. Doctors should have comebacks if they didnt fix the problem right the first time and it should be free.

I wish I had a scanner as good as that one you got so I can try and understand what's going on better every time my mom's 2011 Impala throws a check engine light. Every time its related to the evap crap on it.

Yessir you hit the nail on the head. In my shop as soon as a customer brings their computer through my door we start documentation because were too small of a company to be caught with our pants down

I asked the mechanic where we leave our company cars about the diagnostic equipment costs. And now I'm glad I only work on my own old Volvo and VW engines no younger than early eighties.
