I suspect the reason they did this is that some version of the G Cherokee has a working oil pressure gauge. Maybe not one that is sold in the US. Oil pressure gets sent to the ipc via communication bus from the PCM. Rather than redesigning the ipc to understand on and off from the pcm for oil pressure, they program the pcm to translate on and off to 0psi or 40psi, and (fake) oil pressure numbers or (fake) oil pressure sensor voltage gets transmitted to the ipc. I don't know that for sure, but that's my guess. IPC is probably made by an outside source, most Dodge truck PCMs are built and shipped blank, so it may be easier for them to make a different pcm calibration than make a different ipc calibration.

99-01 has a multi-wire system where the PCM reads output and displays results on the gauge.
In 02, they went to a simple slide switch sensor that just tells the PCM there IS oil pressure, but displays ONLY 40 psi all the time. The theory is Chrysler always had a full set of gauges and the thought was sales would fall off with a simple idiot light. I got the wrong sensor for my 00 and only got 40 psi all the time.

So the O2 sensor is temporarily permanent install, that will only bother people that do not recycle and can afford a new vehicle over removing a failure point connector. Oil pressure switch open one up it has resistors in it. I have replaced that switch on every jeep I ever work on, a real pain on a 4. 7. That Jeep still has a few miles to go.

Eric, in industrial automation, some two wire sensors have a constant voltage supply and the device varies the current it sinks. Usually they vary between 0 and 40 mA. The application is for long leads or noisy environments. Have you ever seen that approach used in a vehicle?

As the owner of two pristine '04 Grand Cherokees, I'd love to figure out how to make the idiot gauge' function so that it reads actual oil pressure. A video on how to do this would be MOST welcome!
I'm a fairly new, very enthusiastic fan of SMA.

That Jeep is a rust bucket, I live down south and our 2004 Cherokee looks brand new compared to that one and we have 140000 miles on ours. Look at that air filter, I seen Jeeps in better condition in the pick your part salvage yards down here.

This is a case of not just a Jeep thing.
My 95 crown vic has an oil pressure gauge, but a simple switch too.
My guess is focus groups have discovered people like oil pressure gauges, but hate seeing the pressure fluctuate.

Wiring loom that little plastic stuff out side the wiring harness was all deteriorated on mine it came back after the new sensors until I replaced the plastic a 3 dollar fix particularly over the engine
