As requested by the viewers we get a closer look at the broken valve in the 2009 Ford Escape 2. 5 that we diagnosed in a previous video. Some viewers commented that they could see the broken piece in the cylinder and on top of the piston. Time to find out if they were seeing things!

Cool video, i used this to help me with a decision - had the chance to buy a low mileage Neon with a known bad Cylinder #2 for a few hundred bucks from a family down the road from us, after watching your pair of videos i was able to confirm before i bought the car, it had the same issue, one exhaust valve with a (smaller) chip out of one edge. being able to do the work myself, i bought the car and changed the valve and put the head back on. Runs great and the replacement valve was only 9. 00 at an engine rebuilding shop i replaced the head gasket, all the valve guides, reground all the valves while the head was on the bench so that cost more than the valve but for me i got a decent little car for our daughter to drive for cheap. Thanks SMA!

Haynes 25: 17 - The path of the wrenching man is beset, on all sides, by the Inequities of bad parts, and oil with coolant mixed in. Cursing is he who breaks a weak bolt in a moment of darkness, for he will surely say MUTHA- BEEP -er, and blindly search for his lost Chilton's. And I will torque down upon thee with GREAT VENGEANCE and FURIOUS ANGER. That which attempts to POISON and DESTROY my motor! And you will KNOW, I've worked on a FORD. when I HURL my wrenches UPON thee!

Meh, I am 20 years in trade, I had a Honda with a 4 banger, with timing belt the customer overheated and had near zero compression. I pulled the head in car in much the same way. I determined it needed a timing belt before tear down. So i just cut the belt. Saved a butt load of time condemning that engine. It got so hot the steel sleeves in the block walked up a bit. So i get it. known junk doesnt get the first class treatment.

Eric, how do you go about balancing work demands and family time. As stated this couple only has this car, a miss on a motor thats going to be replaced isn't a large issue. At what point do you say hey this is family time and the customer can use the vehicle as is until we can replace the said part or get a rental? I ask as I don't know work life balance.
reply

A lot easier to work on out of the car. maybe he should pull all engine's to replace stuff on engine.
Ok I know that's dumb, still sometimes it might not be such a bad idea.
Most engines today have torque to yield bolts so unless they are different lengths it wouldn't matter if they got mixed up or not

Face it Mr. O, there are times when ya just gotta take a look inside and it ain't going away until you know you called it right, lol. that head will probably end up as Budweiser Cans in it next life, lol.
reply

I disagree. If you did the head you would still have a 170K lower end that, as you said, was burning oil. It also had worn bearings and rings, no, you mode the right choice.

Love these older video pop'n up in my list. I love seeing the aftermath videos, it gives good insight to problems you might have in the future. As always keep up the great work!

Eric thanks so much for another great video. And props to you for helping a customer in real need. Im a firm believer in Karma, put out good and good will come back to you.

Had a similar experience with a Mazda 1. 3 engine, replaced the valve and all was good, same burn mark on Ex valve, no visible damage other, engin ran well after that
