we have a look at a Ford F-150 that has an issue with the battery dying overnight. Although I did not see the problem initially, allowing the vehicle to sit for hours paid off

I have a 2005 Toyota sienna. The alternator was only putting out 12. 5ish. You could jump start the van and it would keep running but idling very low and sometimes it would cut off and would not start back up unless I jump started it again.
Replaced the alternator.
And now it would charge the battery and was running fine during the day. But the battery would dye overnight and be completely dead next morning.
I took it to AutoZone for them to test it on and off the van and it tested good. It was only 3 years old.
But to rule out the battery being the problem I put another battery on it (not new but used) and let it sit for a night again. It's been 3 nights and the van has been starting just fine.
What's interesting is that that battery is on a different car now and it won't dye overnight

I'm dealing with a similar issue with an 01 F150 Super-crew. Battery was going dead every few days, then overnight, and now with-in hours. I'm waaay to old to work on my cars now but being a senior citizen on a very fixed income, i have no choice. The alternator & battery are both 3 years old so could be either one I guess. Only other variable is that the back window leaked for abut a year b4 i had the to fix it. So, the inside of the cab would get lots of condensation. Maybe a corroded connection somewhere or bad ground? Wish I could afford that PICO setup you have. Thoughts/suggestions on troubleshooting?

I'm a 62 year old tech, and the fancy equipment slowed you down. I have that stuff as well however with any Ford the alternator is almost always the drain. The diodes go bad and if you remove the belt, you will see the alternator has turned into a motor. Many times the alternator will keep the engine spinning if its shorted the right way, yes with that small of a pulley it will turn the engine. Some things seem to never change.
Thanks for the demo, try my belt off alt turned to motor. Kind of cool!

The currant draw produces heat and heat causes more resistance and more currant draw and this sets up a type of vicious circle where the amp draw can increase over time. You can prove this with a glass top electric stove. If you turn a burner element to 300 degrees and you can see the red glow on the element but it doesn't stay glowing, it turns on and off to maintain the commanded heat. If the control system stayed on all the time the heat would rise and rise.

I have a 12. 5 volt draw on my 2000 f150 discovered by multimeter. I clipped the clip of test light to positive and taped the light to negative post which of course left the light on. pulled each fuse and relay one by one under hood and dash and the light stayed on. So does that mean none of those was the cause of that kind of draw? Brand new alternator. system charging at 13. 9. and battery by itself 12. 8. I'm lost

I've got a 2008 Chrysler Sebring 3. 5 V6 with a lot of the same problems and more. My housekeeper suggested it could be the alternator so I disregarded that right away. Besides taking the new battery completely down over one or sometimes two nights it has a problem with the transmission not shifting into 2nd, 3rd or 4th overnight. I have no idea if these two intermitent problems are related but they do seem to be.

Sir you have some serious dedication. and talent. can't stop watching your videos I need to get a life? but they are very interesting and they always have a good outcome. kind of like a sitcom but you're actually edumacated afterwards. hey that's a good idea you might be the next fixer upper but for cars. TLC Broadcasting where are you?

The Alternator has a rectifier inside made of 4 diodes. if the boundaries of any diode gets weak with heat can weaken the boundary allowing current to go the other way creating a amp draw. that is my theory. What do you think?
