All to often I see techs chasing their tails trying to fix in an issue and assuming the new part they put on was the wrong diagnosis simply because the symptom they were attempting to repair is still there. Always go with the data and never assume NEW means GOOD

I used to work at a Pontiac dealer ( I know I am showing my age. A former assistant service manager had done a side job for his neighbor. He installed an AC Delco reman long block in an Oldsmobile Cutlass. It was an Oldsmobile engine (now I am really showing my age. Anyway, upon start up there was a knocking noise from one of the cylinders. At the time, the terms of the AC Delco warranty provided for replacement coverage (parts and labor) at a GM dealer. So this former assistant service manager brings it to our dealership service department for a warranty replacement. We order another AC Delco long block and install it. The tech starts it up and it makes the same noise. The tech was upset to say the least, because the job only paid factory time. We ordered another AC Delco reman long block. When it got there, the tech installed it for factory time. Once again he starts it up and there is the same noise from one of the cylinders. So we order a fourth AC Delco reman long block. While we were waiting for it to arrive the tech pulled the cylinder heads on all of the failed engines. In all three of the noisey engines he found a socket inside of one of the cylinders, which had damaged the piston and the valves. So, when the last reman arrived the tech pulled the cylinder heads. Yes he again found a socket in one of the cylinders. He removed the socket, reinstalled the heads and put the engine in the Cutlass. This time it run perfect and had no noise. The tech was really upset because he wound up replacing 3 engines all at factory time. Also, for what it is worth all 4 of the engines were remanufactured in Mexico. So like Eric O says, just because it it is New don t mean it is good!

Sometimes it gets so bad with these new part doesn't work that I start thinking Wait a second, they can only have so many of them in stock, so if I get one that doesn't work again I'm gonna keep it and just order another one, and I'll keep going that way until I either find one that works or run them out of stock and have to wait anywhere from a day to a week for the next shipment of parts to come into the parts store.
And I'll only send all the bad ones back (and get the money for them back) when I find one that works, with each and every one of the bad ones CLEARLY MARKED on the OUTSIDE of the box on ALL SIX SIDES with a sharpie that they're no good so I can sleep at night knowing I did my best to make sure bad parts don't go back into inventory.
Yes, bad parts going back into the auto parts store inventory and then being sold has happened to me too, you order a part, it's bad, you send it back, the next one's bad, you order a third part and the first one shows back up at your doorstep. I know it was the first part again because I tagged the first part bad with a tag on a tie wire when I sent it back.

Worst one i ever had was a chrysler 300 i was working on. Replaced a heater core in the summer time because it was leaking, bled the system, good to go. Along comes winter time, luke warm heat. Coolant is full. Replaced t-stat and re-bled, no bueno. Replaced radiator and flushed heater core, no bueno. Replaced water pump (which is timing chain driven, new pump wont spin. Machined wrong. New pump, put back together, bled system, no bueno, still crappy heat. Now has all new cooling system. End up tearing dash back out to look at the heater core which was an aftermarket part, start up the vehicle and the top half is cold while the bottom half is super hot. Order oem heater core, remove new aftermarket one that i installed in the summer time, look inside, the fins are so small you could barely blow through it. Put in oe heater core, bingo! Had 3 full days into fixing a car that ended up being a freebie.

Needed a clutch in my 2000 nissan frontier. Went to NAPA (not a sponsor) got a kit and a new fly wheel ( 5 more than turning the old one.
Put in clutch had horrible chatter. Took it out, cleaned, scuffed, inspected, reinstalled. HORRIBLE CHATTER! Very busy so lived with it a few months. Went to the Amazon bought a kit and another flywheel. Removed Napa parts compared. wrong parts! Either for a V6 or 4X4 I'm guessing. Not sure if they looked it up wrong or it was boxed wrong. Installed Amazon parts, smooth as silk! Don't buy from local NAPA anymore! Didn't take it back since they give DIY folks the third degree if you try to tell them they screwed up (they blame you and refuse to refund. They sold me a bad starter once and refused to give me another unless a local mechanic they knew said it was bad. Called a friend who met me at NAPA, he told then the starter was bad ( he never looked at it)

ive had a similar problem on a heavy duty diesel that i was getting a code for an air gap on the driver side rear wheel and did my checks then tapped the sensor in and it was good for about 30 feet while i test drove it but the abs light and the same code came up so i put a new sensor in and test drove the truck and still had the same code and the truck was fairly new with a couple thousand miles that hadnt even had its first service on it so i didnt think the tone ring was bad cause again it was a newer truck but i pulled the tires off and there it was the ring was crooked on the hub because of a missing screw causing the sensor to push out and cause an air gap code but long story short just cause its a new truck doesnt mean the manufacturers cant mess things up

I had a 2002 Chevy 2500hd with the big 8. 1 liter roll in for the power steering pump. Tore it apart got the reman from my local Napa. Put it in and shipped it. 3 weeks later it's back same issue. Back to Napa I go but all they could do for me is a pump no resivor. I told them I dont install Mr. Potato Head parts. So they swapped it out for me. Put it in shipped it yet again. Only to be able to follow him due to the trail it was leaving. Grrrr. Back in the shop and back to Napa. Oh they found an oring they missed. Back to the shop put the pump in and shipped it. 1 week later it's back and growls. This time it's off to a different store. That worked right out of the box.

Was replacing a driver front door panel on a 17 traverse ltz cus it was broken and it came with a new master board for the windows child lock and power door mirrors. Plugged the new one in and put the panel completely on and only the driver fron window switch worked. Had to take the panel off again and tried switching the wiring harnesses because the new one came with a new wiring harness as well, still nothing. Put the old master board in and everything worked so i sent them on their way. Should've taken 1/2 hour but took longer than 1 1/2 hours

Yep been there done that,
Got 3 bad alternators in a row. Auto parts store didn't believe it. Said it was being installed wrong. No they were just junk. So yes I feel your pain. I just laugh at bad parts now. I'm in the zone as some would say. Ya but I'm still trying to figure out how I got to install a alternator wrong. Lol. Thanks Eric. It's nice to see people like you who know there stuff like myself. Been in business for myself now for 20 years. Stay safe. P. s. dont go in the wrong door Weston will be waiting.

New starter for a 1999 Maxima from O'Reilly's. 1st one died within 60 days, came with a lifetime warranty so swapped it for another, That one died in another 60 days. Swapped it for a 3rd, but this time I also went and pulled an OEM one from the junkyard to compare, and discovered that the O'Reilly's starter only had 10 gear teeth where the OEM had 11. Just a theory but I assume the new ones were slipping on the gear ring causing them to burn up much more quickly trying to turn the engine over.

My ex girlfriend, against my advice, bought a 10 CPS from amazon for her BMW. I told her to at least buy the 50 one from Rock Auto. The average price of the part was around 80. Replaced part, no fix. So I tell her the part is probably bad and get the 50 one she should have bought in the first place. She doesn't believe me, takes it to a local shop, and he charges her 400 to replace the same part. 200 for the part and 200 for labor.
