I've had to bang an extractor onto more and more lug nuts as of late. Belle Tire, Discount Tire, Dealerships, all must just love their 1/2 Ugga-Dugga guns set to ludicris and they just hammer them to the max. I had to do brakes on my wife's Expedition, and found that the lug nut was not the standard 3/4. So I pulled the tools from that came with the truck. and found they also assumed the 3/4 lug. nope. BIGGER. but then when I finally got the right sized socket on there (13/16, I found that the lug was rounded off. The truck had only been worked on at two places. Belle Tire (tires, and the dealership (Oil/Lube/Filter and Rotations. Those guys trashed EVERY SINGLE LUG NUT. Cost me nearly 60 to replace them. not pleased with these newbies at these places they have learning just cranking on the Ugga Dugga until the freaking socket rounds over the lug nut.

Had a similar problem on an old Lincoln Towncar, 2 years after the tires were changed by a big box store. Out of the 20 lugs, 16 came off with a little more effort. The lugs weren t damaged just overtightend. I went to a friend s house that had a better impact, all but one were removed. Knowing that they were the culprits, I went back to the store and insisted that they make this good. They did what you did and replaced the stud and a new lug nut. They did try to charge me, but I wouldn t budge and they ate their mistake. This was Sam s club! Jim

I love the smell of schmokin lube in the mornin! Then, of course, there s the problem of getting the lug out once you ve got the nut removed. I had one cross-threaded lug (I didn t freakin do it) on my Astro and researched the heck out of how to do it all over YT. Tried every one of those methods with no success. Finally in disgust I got out MY Big Nasty, my three pound sledge and wailed on it. Badabingbaddaboom, done! Slipped out the back side, got a new one in and Bob s yer uncle!

Sir
Number 1 cause of rounded lungs? Ugga-dugga guns used to install them combined with the Fisher Price tire tools that come with cars these days trying to un-ugga-dugga it on the side of the road at a later date.
Bet the Walmart garage doesn't have an expensive compressor, SOP is to use the junk in the trunk. Besides, doubt the mechanics can afford air tools on their pay. ; )

I have had issues with wheel nuts galling on Subaru studs of the 2008+ era that I never had on the older models. I'm wondering if they switched to cheaper wheel studs.
Anyway, tips on trying to get a nut that's galling-up off the stud would be handy. Also if applying some anti-sieze to the stud in the first place is a wise idea. or a dumb one.
Cheers,

On these I just use a hollow tube that fits over the remaining nut and long enough to extend out of the wheel long enough to grab it with pipe wrench or vise grips then I simply weld the nut to the inside of the tube trying your best nut to hit the stud but if you do then just twist the stub off. after doing a few of these you never have to lose the stud.

Why is it that people see a nut or bolt and they feel inclined to apply so much torque to it they strip it, shear the head or damage the thread? The nature of a fastener is such that once it's permanently in elastic tension you can stop, applying twice the torque required confers no further benefit.
Except for torque-to-yield, but those are not common.

So this has happened to me and friends plenty of times due to shops using the impact to bang on lugs without using a torque wrench. They either round off or just break. I think the shops are more worried about liability of lugs coming off than having the customer deal with frozen wheel lugs many months later.

How much would you charge for a job like this? Just asking for a friend: ) At least this car still has its wheel studs, my shop snapped the wheel studs in half with their impact and didn't bother to tell me anything about it after they finished rotating my tires. Now you know why some mechanics get a bad wrap.
