Dodge Dakota: Power Steering Pump Those studs on the back of the new pump might be to hold that radiator hose bracket on something +/- a year or 3 of this one you're doing.
I do want to see what happened with that reversed-battery Dodge, those are always fun to see just how much got messed up.
Anyone taking bets on if they managed to total it or not by smoking enough of the electronics? I mean it still starts and runs, so at least the ECU didn't get totally smoked, and all you need to do to get very crude reverse polarity protection on anything electronic is to install a diode in series with the power wire(s) on all the electronics, I mean obviously it won't run like that but the diode blocks the flow of electricity so probably nothing gets too damaged.
I took this idea from taking apart lots of consumer items that are powered by those little power adapters and send the power thru a barrel plug, most of it that I took apart had a diode in series with what the positive lead should be, or it was already expecting AC and just sent the power straight to a bridge rectifier (that works too, and if you do that it will actually run fine with reversed polarity, or even AC input provided it has a big enough filter capacitor on the rectified output or doesn't care about smoothed DC like a simple DC electric motor.
Of course, the reason to NOT put reverse polarity protection on something would be to reduce costs, but c'mon, how much does a single diode per power wire really cost on a car that costs 20k brand new, and an ECU or other computer that's almost certainly north of 100? Diodes suitable for this purpose cost ME maybe 0. 10 each when I order just one of them at a time, but if I go to order them in bulk, like they use at the factories that spit out circuit boards with all the components soldered on them, they cost 0. 061 each for a pack of 27k (standard 1 amp power diode rated for 50v reverse voltage, part number 1n4001, and that's just the price I can find from an electronic component distributor (Mouser. com, if I went direct to the manufacturer and said I expect I'm going to need say a million or 5 of these per year for the next 5-7 years, I expect the cost could be even further reduced.
I expect the real cost of adding reverse polarity protection is less about what the component itself costs and more about the machine time to place and solder each and every component on the circuit board, plus the supply chain issues of adding another part to the bill of materials (if you can't just use one of the other power diodes you might already be using in the design, that's why sometimes you see a massively over-spec part used where a lesser spec one would work just as well and cost less, they're trying to minimize the number of different parts they have to set up supply chains for to actually make the dang thing.

Speaking of power steering lines, the bushings for the rack was getting worn out. Which whatever, but it seems that over time of me not fixing it. The lines are the rack started to come lose a bit and fuild would leak out. I'd put fluid in, but hadn't seen where it was going yet. Then if finally came the fuild would go straight though. Took it home on the hook.
Crawled under and noticed the lines were loose, also thought the feed line was bad. So she got new rack bushings torqued to specification (190 ftlbs, feed line and brake clean for flushing and cleaning. Let the parts dry out and put back together and filled up the system. She been working fine ever since.
Oh and doing the torque on the ground with little arc movement was fun as all get out. Not that sucked, but at least was done right.

Any other techs out there know what Eric said about walking away is an absolute fact, you can be fighting something for an hour just trying to get threads started, finally get pissed enough and go take a smoke break and calm down and as soon as you come back you thread that shit in immediately lol it s seriously like magic. Only problem is most of us are too stubborn to walk away sooner so we waste all that time fighting it while telling ourselves to walk away lol.

That power steering pump looks like it s off a 1965 Dodge Dart except for the pulley. Yet more advanced Dodge technology. I also love this ancient tech pushrod 175hp 3. 9 gets the Magnum badge when it literally makes the same horsepower as a 1. 5 liter Honda Civic.

This vid couldn't have posted at a more convenient time. No I didn't need to change out a Dodge p/s pump but I did have to drop a massive post July 4th deuce. Got me through my entire 20 mins toilet bowl bombing session, thanks Eric!

If that's the same pump that goes on a chevy truck, then the studs on the back are for mounting the bracket that holds the back bolt to the block, and only 3 of the bolt holes on the front are used.

I d have flushed the power steering fluid if it were my vehicle. It s easy enough to do in under 10 minutes. I understand it s likely to not be an issue, but there s really no reason not to.

That looks like the most pain in the ass power steering pump replacement I have seen. I'm sure there are others that are worse. I've only done them on older GM's and Jeep's that were much easier.
