Chevrolet Corvette: Intermittent No Crank - Ignition Switch Jake: Eight years ago while driving my 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 in Florida I experienced a weird thing. Driving in heavy traffic looking for a business to drop off paperwork on a house, as I sat at a traffic light my truck was running and turning off and on, the lights and gauges doing all kinds of things, door locks turning off and on all the time while driving. The battery gauge was showing discharge. I turned it off and was surprised it started but kept doing the same thing. Took it to the dealer and they told me the battery cables needed replaced, there was a lot of amps or whatever going on. So after having them replaced everything was back to normal.

I definitely get the annoyance with GM Vehicles.
Long Story
TL; DR. EcoTech Chevrolet Malibu Water Pump Replacement Fail
Recently tried to get the Water Pump replaced in my EcoTech Malibu and took 12 hours total to get the water pump off. The after getting the water pump back on; since the thing is timing driven i has bolts that go onto a sprocket then the water pump part. Since the engine is transverse it has to be lifted up (for DIY work) to get enough room to see the bolts (even when in this state still have to use magnet and mirror. Well what happened is I was getting the bolts back onto the timing sprocket (also doesnt help that a tool to keep the tension was steel making the magnet stick to it) and I get the bolt into the hole. But the magnet didnt want to unstick from the bolt making me drop the bolt into the timing housing. At that time I thought it hit the ground so I went on my way to get another bolt in. I have one bolt in place (still do) so I could remove the tool if I wanted. So I go on to get another bolt in when the same thing happens. The noise it made was like bolts hitting asphalt or concrete so I thought they fell on the ground. After this I look around on the ground for a few minutes then come to the conclusion that the bolts fell into the housing. And for note I did this in my driveway with no lift or engine hoist. So I now have a Malibu that is undriveable. Worst part is Im gonna have to fix the mistake myself since for some reason getting the timing cover off to complete the job will cost 1500 dollars to do.

Back in the mid 70's I made my living for a year or two pulling wrenches. One day an L88 big block Corvette came through the door for some work. I had never driven a Corvette so I was looking forward to test driving it so I could better understand why so many people gravitated to them. When the work was done, I fired it up and headed out for a test drive. I was gone about 15 minutes but it was long enough to realize that I would never buy one of these piles of crap. Hard to work on due to lack of space, didn't handle worth a damn, rode like a buckboard, wretched to get in and out of, and generally just a big heavy pig.
A friend of mine recently purchased a brand new Corvette. He's had it for about three months now and wishes he had his Camaro that he traded in back. His wife and daughter won't ride in it because it is too hard to get in and out of. The ride is sloppy in regular mode and harsh when in performance mode. It burns gas like it's going out of style. He can't leave it out on the street for fear someone steals it, vandalizes it or runs into it. His normal trusted mechanic has already informed him he will not work on it because they are a P. I. T. A. And last but not least, he can't drive it when winter hits. So I would have to say that not much has changed over the years.

its so nice seeing you do this so i know im not alone. My friend needed me to do this exact fix on his 01 corvette as well, no dealer or shop around would touch it. I cant get over how much the plastic interior CREAKED, just like your video. the only difference was I'm 6ft7 and built like a linebacker, and didnt fit easily in the car. so much of the plastic was broken on the car, and it was serviced at the Chev dealer all its life before he bought it, telling me you were more careful then they ever were.

When i turned 40, i had to have a red Corvette & a 19 year old Italian girlfriend. I got both. The transmission & starter both failed on it at the same time. Fixed it. Then, the girlfriend cut all the tires on the Vette. It was a good time to get rid of both of them. Only car I ever lost money on. Not the only girl I ever lost money on. C'est la Vie.

The top of the dash on my GM 13 Chevy Avalanche is a mass of cracks, and I have taken as good care of this vehicle as can be done without being OCD about it. This past week a new crack appeared in the plastic below the front a/c vents - the first on the dash vertical (sort of) surface. GM sucks.

You got to love these interior repairs where you take apart crap all the way to the other end of the car just to get to something simple, like a Ignition switch. Repairs like this in the manual: Ignition switch replacement. Step 1. Remove the rear axle. SMH.

About working: indeed. The FIRST driven fourteen year old will make BANK right now, just by showing up and not being a butt! Certainly an easier pack to run with than when I started working as an apprentice at ten and as a taxpayer at fourteen!

We used to have mechanics bring cars to our body shop to disassemble, then they would come get car to do what had to be done! We had a kid that could gut a door on most models in a half hour! Except Ford's because they riveted all the parts.

Great job. You reminded of the reason I didn't becomme a professional mechanicc.
Re sucky jobs - my buddy told me to never say no, just up the price until it's actually worth it, sometimes the customers don't even blink when they accept.
