Can E-Bay Counterfeit Parts Destroy Your Engine? Allen: I could work on my car in the 70's and 80's. I used to change my own oil and breaks, even rebuilt an engine or two. Now I go to a certified mechanic. I'm handy and can read but am not dumb enough to screw with what is basically a high tech computer with wheels. Watching your show just confirms to me Leave it to the Pros. Thanks, as always, for the lesson Mr. O.

What I don't get is that we are talking billion dollar corporations like AC Delco, etc. And it appears that their lawyers are not shutting down these counterfitters from third world countries like they should be. I recall the guitar maker Rickenbacker was quite proactive in going after counterfit sellers of fake Rickenbacker guitars & effective in doing it. Companies like AC Delco don't seem to understand that their reputation gets trashed (along with some bargain minded car or truck owner's vehicle) when these counterfit parts destroy good vehicles. Ebay gets grief, but I'd like to see the copyright lawyers for GM, AC Delco, etc held to the fire, too.

Hubba Bubba Eric after almost, well you do the math, I started my apprenticeship in 1966, & still running my own shop for 45 of them, you are100% of bull crap parts, never seen so much! I do get sick of fixing problems where 1-4 different mechanics have run out of parts to throw vehicles that end up in my lot! Now the customer has no money & heard I m good? I say, You pay my heat bill for the month & I will see what I can do! I live in Ontario with pretty cold winters, people think garage heat comes from Santa! LOL

Brother purchased an '05 Suzuki Firenza. Being a good owner and not knowing the age of the timing belt he had a local garage replace it. Two weeks later, it leaves his wife stranded. The timing belt idler bolt broke. Don't know if it was previously damaged, but it took out the valves. So, the guy takes it in, replaces the bent valves. He replaced the broken bolt. HOWEVER, the belt that had jumped/slipped/skipped, was reused! Two years later, belt leaves his wife stranded! Cheap belt kit! Reused damage belt!

I've had good luck with Rock Auto parts. I needed an evap canister for my 03 Tacoma and the only one they had listed was marked Various Manufacturers, which kinda gave me the willies, but ordered it anyway. When it arrived, I was happily surprised to see a Denso part in the box, for less than half of what Toyota wanted for the same piece. Only ever had one defective part, a 4wd actuator for the same truck, dead out of the box- but they took it back no questions asked, and sent me a good one.

That's why I learned how to work on calls at the age of 12 years old and I'm 42 years old now still working on my own car will never have that problem and I've been stopped dealing with eBay after I was trying to buy a car from off of eBay and got scammed out of 1, 000 I don't have nothing to do with that company especially Amazon I bought a alternator from them the alternator only left at 5 months so I deal with auto parts stores

i went down the ebay injector road 1st time did get genuine parts in delco boxes the next time not so good they were in a bag. the add said they bought in bulk so they wouldn't be in boxes but when you look close you can tell the font of the lettering is different and the like you said body color was different it was a 6 cylinder only 4 of them were good wound up putting 2 of the old injectors back in and it now runs good

If you aren't buying parts from a brick and mortar parts supplier store, OE, or Rock Auto/Summit/Jegs, you run the high likelihood of being scammed by a 3rd party seller, This goes for Amazon too, but Amazon is a little bit easier to deal with if you have a problem if the order is wrong or a bad product. Ebay is trash for the most part, if you have a problem you're usually up shit creek without a paddle.

I've actually had a fair amount of success buying motorcycle parts on Ebay - for older bikes where OE isn't available anymore. You just have to learn to spot brands and sellers you can trust, and then recognize the quality of the item when it arrives. I would definitely not buy engine parts for a car or truck though. The second repair is always the costly one.

The problem with buying local Eric is that parts have increased 400% in the last few years, along with all other living expenses However my pay hasn't increased very much. It forces people to make decisions to buy parts from sketchy places and take the chance, might get your car fixed or you might not, but surely it won't be if you can't afford it local.
