Project Rotted Subaru Subframe - Part I

Project Rotted Subaru Subframe - Part I Brian: a little Rust Check or Fluid Film throughout the yrs would have saved this part. especially in NY state where salt just destroys these subframes. I have a 2017 Outback and it is night and day compared to this one with Rust checking since I got it new. My last Subaru 2005 Baja lasted until I sold it 2020 99% rust free because of the Rust Check. those cotter pin removals sent shivers through me because I have literally spent hours maybe days of my life removing them from big rigs while doing kingpins and you had to save 300 dollar tie rods and drag links in the mean time. some came right off while others tortured me. that is why i use antiseize on EVERY cotter pin I install

Eric, glad I made it early enough to make a comment you might see. Been wanting for a long time to tell you how much I enjoy your videos. I m not a mechanic but am mechanically inclined! I always learn something g from your videos! I also enjoy your joviality, honesty and that you show us your wonderful family every now and then. How Mrs O puts up with you I don t know but not do I understand how mine has with me for our 40 years together. Thanks for reading and for the great knowledge and entertainment!

On the west coast of Florida we have a better way of getting salt on the road. We like to call it storm surge. The Gulf Mexico ends up in people's front yards and across roads. People being people they drive through it. I've seen a few people crack their blocks bombing through two feet of water pretty impressive. Cars that have been in the Gulf of Mexico or in the water like that you'll rot out in a couple years

Waiting for the suggestion you hop down to Wilbert's to extract the replacement, to save some & we know the junk yard subframes are all pristine. Further Eric holds the front end in the air, removes the Wilbert subframe with the other. It is cold so must work fast. As for tools Don't need no stinkin' tools (deliberate grammar) easy peeze.

Have you ever thought of moving down south to South or North Cackalaky or Tenn. Or northern Georgia. Much nicer weather, no rust and a change. More laid back. Think about it. I grew up outside of Cleveland Ohio. My family moved to Western North Carolina. It is much nicer weather and area. I think Tenn. might be better or Northern Georgia.

Done a couple of sub frames over the years, other than poop in your ears & down your back, not bad! K cars were famous for them in the day! Rather Do A/C work, but, what s it like to want! LOL We all wait for part 2! Where I get bolts mixed up after someone kicks em! have fun man, torque to spec off screen, ha!

Nice video, I'm suprised that it makes financial sense to replace that do you mind telling us how much the new subframe was? Also could you please show in part 2 why it failed inspection?
Re spilling the ps fluid, you're not a hack lol, that's the only reason the exhaust bolts came out Haha!

I have an 11 Outback. It spent its first year in the rust belt. I m lucky that I didn t suffer rust damage like that. It did cause hub bearing replacement to be a challenge with hand tools in my driveway. Took me hours. I did my wife s in 30 minutes, but her car has never left Texas.

I must be missing something here. It s a 2014 and the frame shouldn t have rotted through yet. I don t think he has showed exactly where the problem was and why the frame was not salvageable. A torch can do amazing things when it comes to frame repair. Hope he explains in part 2.

I've done 2 of these in the past month at my shop. Not nearly as crusty as that one. The rear control arm bolt that goes up through the subframe into a sleeve broke away on both. The worst part is no Subaru dealers deliver to me so I have to drive 75 miles to go get the subframe.

Maybe I missed it but didn't see the part where you condemned it honestly I live in buffalo new York just a stone's throw away and it is rusty but it doesn't look that rotted at least from my view in the camera I have seen some where you knock a hole in it with the judge

Eric you attack this job like your on an assembly line. Love all the clash, crash, smash and banging. You should have been a surgeon! Love your videos. Now if the guy washed undercarriage regularly and fluid filmed some he may have not ended up here. Love your videos

Great mechanics are hard to find, Parts cannons cost me 950. 00 one time and had the money light from the day I bought it, sold it for the parts cost. Mechanic can kiss my cars back bumper, If I can t fix it, I look on here at SMA first to find my problem.
reply

You must be the guy that tears down and re-assembles vehicles for Chilton and Haynes manuals. In the past 7 years I've been watching SMA, I don't think there is 1 component or system that you haven't repaired or replaced. Pretty cool, my guy.
