The Volkswagen Golf R is a fast four wheel drive that can get the hatchback from 0-62 mph in just 4. 9 seconds. Is it worth the extra pice over the GTI however, or other rival manufacturers such as the Ford Focus RS, the Mercedes A45 AMG or Audi RS3 Sportback? Let Mat take you through his full review of the Golf R in our 4k review

hi congratulation, nice video. i have a golf r 2017, 19- wheels and do not inted to lower the dimensions. i was wandering if i could improve my ride. first i must say that ''improving'' for me means mercedes air suspension like confort and when i want ohlins like sport ride. i do not use my car in trak days or in track, i use it to go to work and sometimes i like to drive a in a sport setting, not all the time. therefore i looked at many companies, km, ohilins, blistein, they all seem too sport oriented and they do sacrifice the double face nature i am looking for, so i checked some air suspension companies. the air suspension seem focused on ''stance'' ( lowering the car to the grownd, i could not care less about looks. so here i am asking you for some advice. which suspension should i pick?

1. Do you need a car to drive daily, have fun when you want to and not show off at all? - Golf R is the best choice. Superb interior quality, technology which is not available on most competitors (for example, ACC or a infotainment system which isn't annoying) and surprising practicality.
2. OR Do you need a car to drive daily, but also have fun on a trackday and not show off too much? - Focus RS is the best choice. Its super fast and fun to drive, although has a shitty interior.
3. OR Do you need a car to show off with its looks and the fact that it is fast round the Nurburgring? - Honda Civic Type R is the best choice. It's not as fast in the real world due to FWD and its not as good as a daily car, but it looks like a true ricer's car and has a big wing.

Hey, key to remember is that stateside at least, dealers are charging a mark up because of demand. Although RS should be cost competitive with the R around $40K, it's not uncommon to see the RS fetching for $50K, easy. Was told this from a number of dealers too. I have the dynamic nav package and to be honest, I wish I would've saved on warranty, got the manual for $36K and did a stage 1 APR bring hp/tq to 380+.
Good luck in your decision - hope you can learn from what I might consider a mistake -- then again, I'm considering a C-Max for economic purposes; )

Ive had my 5 door DSG for a few weeks now. Great fun to drive and practical as well.
MPG in slow traffic is shockingly bad - 10mpg average - the fuel gauge will rapidly deplete if you do lots of slow drives. But at steady motorway speeds it's 34 which is fine for me. I didnt buy this to get miles out of a tank - but it's a warning for those who expect this car to be be an all-rounder. It is, but only if you live somewhere where traffic isn't too heavy. My last run in stop/start traffic and crawling speeds for 15 mins and I got 9mpg average!

Its blandness works in its advantage; it's the car to have if you're over 40 because you can get away without having the vast majority of friends thinking that it's a midlife crisis car, it just looks ordinary. you can't to that driving the Focus RS or the Civic Type R.

Ultimate sleeper, with a few mods it'd be really quick (even though it already is, I think that past a certain point you appreciate a subtle sporty car, no need for a riced Civic Type R. I also like the fact that only car enthusiasts will appreciate it.

Why does nobody talk about the terrible lag and delayed throttle response art very low revs, and from stopped? I owned one, and I couldn't trust it to get into gaps in the traffic. It was the worst at this, of any car I've ever owned.

Mat I need an opinion at the end. Non-objectively. Do like and thumbs up/ thumbs down Gladiator type verdict at the end. It what set old Top Gear reviews apart from every other review around. A personal opinion. I trust you man.

I think the most important thing, most people tend to forget, is to drive this every single day. Rain, sleet, snow, etc The Golf does indeed seem to be easy to live with every day, and i agree with Solomon, Sleepers are great!

Matt says it will corner better due to the all-wheel drive, it doesn't work that way infact the weight of a AWD system will make the handling worse but improve traction under acceleration. Sorry I had to say it.
